    HRF Keating anpther hit!
I had read one of his later novels and this is the first one where he introduces "The Hard Detective" a woman who has a talent for policing. It's an engaging story and I plan to get more in the series. It is unfortunate that they don't organize Keatings works by series, because titles are often mixed.
    Crime Thriller
This is the beginning of a crime thriller, featuring DCI Hariett Martens and her team of detectives.
Having earned her way to the top of the ladder in a man's world, Martens has had to be tough and single minded when it comes to taking crime off the streets. She takes no quarter from anyone and does what it takes to get the job done.
Two of her officers have died within hours of each other. After investigating, Martens comes to the conclusion that they were murdered. A life for a life, an eye for an eye. She is concerned that the killer is only beginning .....
And as the body count mounts .. all law enforcement personnel ... she hatches a plan .. a plan that could very well cost her her job ... or her life.
Martens is a bit too hard for my taste. I like strong protagonists, but Martens seems to have no soft edges anywhere. This makes her unpalatable in my eyes. She seems to always be yelling .. and she's always right no matter what the issue. Her team seem to fear her, rather than respect her.
The killer has a reason for these deaths.. but I think it could have been explained in a more cohesive way. The ending was a bit choppy.
I am starting to read The Dreaming Detective ..... hopefully it will be better written. And I'd like to see how Martens progresses ....
Many thanks to the author / Endeavour Press / NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
More serious than his usual style
HRF Keating is a favourite author, this one is a little different to his Inspector Ghote stories. I did enjoy it, but it was different. The story was well developed although I did find the conclusions coming too quickly and too many coincidence falling into place. It is a book that I found hard to put down and it moved along very well. I certainly with read more.
This book was provided to me in return for an honest and unbiased review
    I loved this book
I loved this book. I really enjoyed the strong female protagonist, the camaraderie between the various police officers/detective, the way they had to pull together to save their own. It was an interesting mystery and the main character was intense, secretive and wanted to separate her home life from her work life. I can appreciate that.
The villain in the piece had me confused, I really didn't understand where she came from at first but then, as I got further into the story, it really even didn't seem to matter. I liked that they followed a certain biblical passage as far as the deaths of the officers.
I look forward to more from this author and can't wait to read others in the series. These are my favorite types of novels.

    Five Stars
Thank you! As described, and received on time!
One of my new favorite authors
I discovered Jack Kerley via Goodreads.com and have since ordered and read every one of his books. Love his brother; deliciously diabolical. A great story with lots of deep South atmosphere.
    Another good story
I am again pleased to have purchased one of J kerleys books. I really like the stories and characters, they always leave me wanting more.
    Buried Alive
First J.A. Kerley book I've read & I'll definitely be reading more. Good story line, I didn't want to put it down.
Not for those with weak stomachs!
Jack Kerley has now written 7 of these books in the series featuring Detective Carson Ryder. I have not read the earlier books in the series but did read the last book entitled `Little Girls Lost'.
After Ryder witnesses the escape of the violent psychopath Bobby Crayline from prison, he decides a holiday is in order. He takes a rare break in the mountains with his faithful dog named Mix-Up (GREAT name for a dog by the way!). As usual, Carson's break is interrupted, as any good fictional Detective should expect! He gets called to a grisly murder scene by an anonymous phone call.
His unexpected presence at the crime scene doesn't go down well with local Detective Donna Cherry, but before long there are too many bodies to be fighting between themselves. Unwittingly Carson gets dragged into the murders and tries to help Cherry get to the bottom of it.
With the arrival of the FBI, things certainly don't go smoothly and before long Carson realises there is a lot more at stake that a serial killer, as things and people from his past begin to emerge.
I enjoyed the last Kerley book I read and was looking forward to the next instalment. This didn't disappoint in terms of Carson and the storyline. When I saw other reviews of the book, a couple of people complained there was a major plot spoiler quite early on that looked like an editorial mistake. Thankfully, I am not that bright and was so engrossed in the book I must have missed it!
Ryder is a great character and again is written well with all his baggage too. It's nice to see him in an area that is not his local stomping ground and the character Donna Cherry made for a good match up as she is certainly not a pushover. The story itself starts with the escape of convict Bobby Crayline, and before long I forgot all about him while the other murders were taking place. This meant that there were two major plots running through the story which made it quite interesting.
The murder scenes were as usual very grisly and descriptive, but I must point out that Jack Kerley actually made me wince whilst reading one particular section of the book.

    Members Reviews:
A mixed bag but ultimately a disappointment
This is the fourth book I have listened to by this author and for me the most disappointing. I found the plot uneven and lumpy and the complete reverse of everything I liked about Grave Doubts. The author's early attempt to misdirect the reader over the relationship between Nightingale & Fenwick seems clumsy and almost irrelevant to the plot. Equally it was fairly transparent from about midway what the fate of one of the missing--presumed murdered--boys was likely to be. Few plot twists and slow pace coupled with subject matter which is not for the fainthearted. The narrator is very good however some of the voices he gives to certain characters can be a little grating.
    Great suspense until the end.
Well written. Elizabeth Corley continues to develop the main characters that appear across the series.
The story unfolds slowly, keeping you guessing throughout the book.
An enjoyable roller coaster that is difficult to put down.

    A FINE STORY, BRILLIANTLY READ!
What made the experience of listening to The Whispering Gallery the most enjoyable?
A highly unusual plot, set in St Paul's Cathedral so this was a different type of thriller. This was made particularly enjoyable because of the superb range of characters played by the reader, Jonathan Keeble, who had a multiplicity of voices ranging from cockney old ladies to middle class clergymen. One of the best readers I have heard.
What about Jonathan Keebles performance did you like?
Jonathan Keeble is a versatile and highly professional reader. He has great range and subtlety.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
At times I wanted to continue listening to it for far longer than I was able but this worked for me over several afternoons, listening for an hour or two at a time.
    Any additional comments?
A fine story, quite scary and unpredictable.
    More Anachronisms
While the author appears to have studied the streets of London very closely, it's a pity that more care hadn't been taken with removing so many anachronisms.

    Stereotypical classist story
This was written in 2005 but fits better in the genre of the 1950's. The authors characterisation of working class (feckless and dishonest) and upper middle class (to be shielded and protected and can do no wrong) are shockingly stereotypical.
I found the main character (Daisy) irritating and not at all convincing. The plot depended on some very insecure suppositions and obscure relationships.
In all I did not have much sympathy for any of the characters and only listened to the end in case there may have been a twist which tried to switch my nonexistant sympathy towards the working class characters.
Peter Wickham did a valiant job, switching his accents skillfully but it didn't save the story for me.

good plot but somewhat unbelievable characters
I love stories set in Cornwall so this was irresistable. After the first chapter I decided that the main character, born in Cornwall, having an occupation in the international surfing world was just strange but other than that lots of good twists and turns and subplots. Way too many murders in one little town in a few days, but that is fiction!
    Second Better than the First.
I liked "No Corners for the Devil" and hoped the next book would live up to expectations. It has and then some. I would recommend it to anyone. I hope this series continues as it is certainly one of the better "village" mysteries going.

    Publisher's Summary:
Vlado Petric, former detective in war-torn Sarajevo, has left his beloved homeland to join his wife and daughter in Germany, where he scratches a meagre living in the building sites of the new Berlin. When Petric returns to work one evening, he finds an enigmatic American investigator waiting for him in the small apartment he and his wife share. The investigator (Pine) works for the International War Crimes Tribunal, and he tells Petric that they want him to return to Croatia. It doesnt take Petric long to accept, especially when Pine tells him they are after a big fish: the man whom they think is responsible for a terrible massacre in Srebrenica. What Petric doesnt know is that he is also being used as a bait to lure a murderer from the previous generation into the open; a man whose activities in the Second World War makes the current generation of killers look like amateurs.
The Small Boat of Great Sorrows is a wonderful, thought-provoking, gripping novel; crime in so much as it needs a label, international thriller in its scope and narrative drive. Like John Le Carre and Robert Harris, Fesperman moves seamlessly between time schemes as the past informs and impacts on the present and nowhere is this more evident than in the Balkans with its traumatic history. In Fesperman, we have a quality author, writing novels packed with authentic detail, and characters that are totally believable.
