Nameless wasnt supposed to come into the office on Mondays. He wasnt supposed to answer the phone. On this Monday he did both. The call was from Barney Rivera - once a friend, now despised - at Great Western insurance. Against his better judgement, Nameless agreed to meet him. The investigation was relatively simple: a multimillionaire rare books collector had reported the theft of eight volumes, worth half a million dollars. From a locked library. To which he had the only key...

Rare Detective Fiction and A Locked Room
Rare detective fiction is missing. To solve the crime, Nameless has to also deal with muder in a locked room. Something about the murder just doesn't ring true. Jake Runyon investigates a family facing threats. But why? Runyon has to delve into the past. Tamara finds a man who makes her happy. Is he everything that he seems? The Nameless series has run for more than thirty years by allowing characters to grow and change. Enjoy.
    great story
I love all of the Nameless books and they just seem to be getting better. At first I wasn't sure if I would like the additon of the others in his office, but now I see that they are a good part of the stories. If you haven't read any of Pronzini's Nameless books, I would recommend that you find the older ones and start at the beginning of his story.
"No wonder people are paranoid these days."
In Bill Pronzini's "Schemers," Nameless and the staff of his San Francisco-based private investigation agency are looking into two very different mysteries. One involves Cliff and Damon Henderson, two brothers in their thirties who are being stalked by a psychopath with an unknown agenda. The perp has already damaged their personal property and beaten Damon with a tire iron. The Hendersons have no idea why they are being targeted. Since the police have not been able to help them, they turn to Nameless, hoping that he can find their "faceless enemy" before he escalates his attacks.
The other puzzle is brought to Nameless's attention by his former friend, Barney Rivera, a slimy character who is the chief claims adjuster for an insurance company. He hires Nameless to look into the theft of eight vintage first-edition mysteries, worth half a million dollars, from the collection of sixty-seven year old Gregory Pollexfen. Pollexfen, who is unhappily married to a much younger woman, alleges that the items were taken from a secure library to which no none is ever admitted without his being there. Barney dares Nameless to solve this "locked room" puzzle, and even agrees to sweeten the pot with a hefty bonus if he succeeds.
"Schemers" is an engrossing tale of underhanded, desperate, and mentally ill people who wreak havoc on both the innocent and guilty alike. Working with Nameless are twenty-six year old Tamara Corbin, a computer expert and "human dynamo," and Jake Runyon, a former Seattle cop whose heart was broken when beloved second wife, Colleen, passed away. While Bill's private life has been blessedly uneventful of late, Tamara is all excited about her new beau, Lucas Zeller, and Jake is slowly getting closer to Bryn Darby, a woman who withdrew from society after a stroke left her face partially paralyzed. Jake's relationship with Bryn is poignant and affecting.

    Publisher's Summary:
Mid-December 2008. Barack Obama has just been elected; all New York is ecstatic, especially Harlem. On a freezing night a few weeks later, detective Artie Cohen gets a late call from his ex girlfriend, Lily Hanes, begging for his help. Lily has been living at the Louis Armstrong Apartments, one of Harlem's great buildings, while working on Obama's campaign; now her Russian neighbor, Marianna Simonova, has died, and Lily fears she's at fault and needs Artie's Russian connections.
Over a weekend when the city is locked in by snow and cold, with the financial markets tanking, one after another people at the Armstrong die. Artie, out of his element, a white detective in a black world, is drawn inexorably into the realm of Sugar Hill and the Armstrong, where almost everybody, except for the real-estate developers, seems locked in the past.
Working to solve the murders, Artie tries desperately to win Lily back. Blood Count is a murder mystery, a love story, and a tale about New York, race, real estate, money, and music, with an ending one could never predict.

    Made me claustrophobic
Having grown up of Russian Jewish descent in the Coney Island /Brighton Beach area I really enjoy Reggie's connection to Brighton Beach. Unfortunately this novel spends way too much time inside one building. As As a former criminal defense lawyer with a Harlem office and a graduate of City College of New York , I am very familiar with Harlem. I enjoyed the desciption of the area but I think Regie beat the building to death . I grew tired of the site description. As much as I enjoy her writings this novel made me claustrophobic. This does not mean that I will stop reading Reggie. I look forward to her next work and hope to see one of her novels as a movie. I put her up there with Block, Connelly, Kellerman and the other greats. She reminds me of Pelicanos because you can sense her life experience as the foundation for her writings. Not her best but even the greats miss once in awhile
    Harlem-Obama wins!
More good detective work from our favorite Russian-American,Artie Cohen. This one centers on a murder in Harlem around the time of Obama's 2008 Presidential win.The euphoria is captured, though the story-with its surprises-is unrelated.Questions about local political issues arise,as do moral-legal quandries for Artie himself[Nadelson herself does another terrific job of stepping into her male creation!]Blood Count will be welcomed by those who enjoy following the investigations and flawed personal life of New York's Detective Cohen.
    Keep Counting
I found Blood Count to be incredibly boring. It was so slow as to be annoying. This was surprising to me as I usually enjoy the books I pick out, but this one just took forever to get going.
    I stopped the count
Couldn't get into this book and I just gave up. I'm also getting real tired of most books using the f word and others in ordinary conversation. About the only ones I hear using this language is typically teens that haven't grown up yet.
Come on you authors surely you can write conversation that's fit to listen to.

    Publisher's Summary:
"If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country."
    E. M. Forster
Through seven previous novels, Reggie Nadelson has created one of the more memorable characters in detective fiction: Artie Cohen, New York police detective and first-generation American with complex ties to his Russian past, especially his close friendship with the enigmatic and flamboyant New York/London club owner Tolya Sverdloff.
Now, in Londongrad, by far Nadelson's most ambitious novel to date, Artie is faced with a murder that strikes at him personally and will ultimately place his best friends life in his hands as it challenges his own loyalty.
In a playground in Brooklyn, Artie is led to a dead girl tied up in duct tape on a childrens swing. He soon realizes the killer murdered the wrong girl - the intended victim was Valentina Sverdloff, Tolya's daughter, long adored by Artie. Artie flies to London to tell Tolya and finds himself enmeshed on his friend's behalf in a maelstrom of Russian money and crime.
Like Berlin at the end of World War II, somebody tells Artie, Londongrad, as its known, has become an offshore island for the new Russian underworld. Over his head, Artie is drawn further in, to Moscow, where, balancing between the old KGB and the new FSB, between the dazzle and grimness of Russia today, he uncovers a painful truth about his past that puts Tolya's life in the balance.

    ARTIE COHEN STAY IN BROOKLYN
ARTIE COHEN IS AN INTERESTING SERIES.
I THINK IT COULD BE TURNED INTO A TV MOVIE.I WOULD CAST VIGGO MORTENSON AS THE LEAD.
INTERESTING CHARACTERS IN THE BOOK SERIES WITH VIVID BROOKLY N.Y. LOCALES.
    page turner
This is the type of book that incorporates a zillion tiny details that only someone who knows the locale intimately would know. Those names and descriptions lend an authenticity to this fictional thriller; makes one a believer from the get-go. Packed full of current details and fictional bits and pieces---the reader is left wondering just what is the 'real deal'. This is a cloak and dagger book in the very best sense; a true page-turner.
    Four Stars
Avery good book by this talented author.
    Artie Cohen In His Prime
My favorite detective, Artie Cohen, is again at loose in the world. This time in New York, London, and Moscow. The reasons for his wandering are tied so tightly to the plot that I hesitate to spoil it for you by attempting to summarize very much. Suffice it to say that there are multiple murders in all locations and enough twists in the narrative to keep you guessing and engaged. Like me, I suspect you will not be able to put "Londongrad" down. To say that this is a page-turner does not do it justice because its sense of place and character is so strong that you will forget that this is a "just" a thriller and get draw into its literary qualities. Reggie Nadelson's best yet. I can't wait for the next one.
    Poor reading

"With all my degrees and knowledge, how could I have lived with my head in the sand for so long? I'm thinking of nicknaming myself 'Ostrich'... head in the sand, backside flopping around in the air, going around in circles, tripping over my own long legs and awkward feet, never getting anywhere at all. It certainly seems an appropriate label, especially given the latest mess I'm now working my way through."
Dr. Magdalena LaSige, a 33-year-old criminal archepsychologist, throws herself headfirst into finding a kidnapped Carmelite nun - the sister of her former professor, the handsome and wealthy Dr. Peter Janus. She is given ancient pictures and symbols sent from the kidnappers, clues in an archetypal trail of deceit. The Pyramids of Giza, DNA codes, constellations, medicine, money - these symbols, stories, and legends all combine to challenge everything Magdalena has taken for granted as truth. And the truth seems to be the last thing Dr. Janus wants to discuss. What is his connection with the pharmaceutical companies he consults for, and how does that play into the kidnapping? Is the 'scorpion's sting' a medical project or something much more sinister?

    Excellent!
    Sweet mystery
I am not sure is Mags is a continuing character but I was surprised by her humanity.. She is not a super hero but a common lady weaving her way through liffe
Bravo my dear, 6 stars. Mags rocks!
Well, this was an all out page turner for sure, both forward AND backward. One moment I'm subconsciously needing to devour the remaining chapters before they mysteriously disintegrate into an ancient relic dust with all the clues vanishing for eternity through my fingers. The next, Im paging back to re-process all the historic and scientific details thrown at me from some universal higher power saying, "forget everything they taught you in school kids".
JD Materson sublimely challenges the reader into looking at the world from outside the box, like some ignorance vaccine, with witty dialogue and imaginative sci fi thrown in just for good measure.
Heart wrenching cliff hanger. Cant wait for Mags to rip the CIA and Wall St. a new one now!
The reviews are coming in for this book and are excellent! See some below!
From A Roman Catholic Nun who did leave the church, who is reading it a second time so as not to miss anything...
"Your background and your knowledge are so incredible....I know nothing about the Amplified Bible and very little about the Bible, so this will need more attention from me, but in general I found it most enlightening. I loved the part about caring for dying children and their parents, and was moved by your reason for giving up psychology. The main theme about the medical pharmacalogical groups promoting the unnecessary and harmful vaccines and excessive use of prescriptions was most enlightening. It gave me new thoughts abouth the fourteen or more pills I take each day. You did a great job on the Catholic Church, which I was happy to see. And even though people like me find it hard to digest, I'm very glad you've added writing to your very varied career! F.O. AFTER HER SECOND READ: "I think it is truly an amazing book.

Freddie plays a dead man's hand
Freddie O'Neal, Catherine Dain's dauntless plane-flying, keno-playing Private Investigator, finds herself surrounded by survivalists, clergy, mothers, and the sights and sounds of Christmas in what is hopefully not the last of this wonderful series. When Freddie's boyfriend is accosted at a Reno shopping mall, Freddie, defending him, shoots and kills the assailant. With her boyfriend in the hospital, her mother and his converging on Reno for the holidays, and even her buddy Deke in a testy mood, Freddie is not in the mood for Christmas. This increases when a clergyman asks Freddie's assistance in unraveling a crime that involves -- you guessed it -- the teenager she shot at the mall. As are all of Dain's mysteries, Dead Man's Hand is smoothly written and addictively readable. I neglected every aspect of my life for the day it took to devour Dead Man's Hand. If there is any flaw with this book, it is that the mystery is transparent to alert readers, and that, if rumours are true, it may be Freddie's last transcribed case.
    Freddie O'Neal mysteries
I have enjoyed every one of the Freddie O'Neal mysteries. The only problem seems to be that they are very difficult to find.

    Not one of her best!
While I have read and enjoyed all of Patricia Cornwall's books through the years this was a disappointment as an audiobook. It may have been due to the style and tone of the narrator - it appeared to drag on.
An author running out of ideas
This book by Patricia Cornwell falls well short of her best writing. The plot is threadbare and there is so much padding that long before the midpoint I had lost interest. There is no further development of the characters which are central to the Kay Scarpetta books.

All of Harvey's books are great and I learned a ton of things about the Chicago area. A fine read for late at night when the cold winds howl!
Michael Harvey's Second PI Michael Kelly Chicago Murder Thriller
Michael Harvey's second fictional thriller, The Fifth Floor staring former cop turned Private Investigator Michael Kelly is set in Chicago in 2008.
Kelly's former girl friend Janet is married to her second husband, Johnny "the fixer" Woods--a wife beater--working at the City Hall/Cook County Building for "The Fifth Floor" office of Chicago Mayor John J. Wilson.
Janet hires Mike to investigate and document her husband abuse. It had reached a stage where Johnny's 14 year old step-daughter, wants Kelly to kill him.
Michael Kelly understands abuse having grown up with a cowardly drunken father who beat him and his older brother, Phillip daily until they grew up. Like Taylor, he would have like to see his father dead.
Observing Woods enter and quickly leave the Bellinger Cottage at 2121 North Hudson with his face white from fear, Kelly enters the building and discovers the dead body of amateur historian, 75-year-old Allen Bryant, great-great-grandson of the home's original occupant, police officer, Richard Bellinger, who saved the building from the Chicago Fire in October of 1871.
From that point on the story takes the reader on a roller coaster ride full of twists and turns through the origins of "a gang of thieves, also known as Chicago's founding fathers," dirty tricks, patronage politics, graft and murder.
The author spends a great deal of time presenting a variety of alternative theories to O'Leary's cow as the cause of the Great Chicago fire. One theory presented on April 1, 1978 by Sun-Times reporter, Rawling "Smitty" Smith as an April Fools article landed him in jail after police stopped him claiming he was drunk while planting drugs and a gun in his car and forcing him to make a deal with then prosecutor, now District Attorney Gerald O'Leary in exchange for not charging him with armed robbery and rape based on the photo lineup testimony of a hooker. The deal was that "Smitty" resign and leave town.
