Impressive and unique writing style

I'm only 35% through this book but it's enough for me leave a review. I am impressed with the author's writing. It's sparse yet descriptive and flows in a unique way. I don't think this book is for everyone, especially those who favor more standard writing fare as I can see them getting frustrated with the author's unwillingness to spoon-feed exposition.

The concept of the Program is a good one, not new, but well executed from a structural standpoint.

There are some gaps of backstory that the author backfills a little too sparsely but that may be more of a reading preference on my part. Overall, I'm enjoying this and do not regret the purchase. Unlike too many other recent offerings, this is one I know I'll finish. Excellent work, Ms Giltrow.

Edit: I finished this book last week. While there were some parts that dragged in the middle, on the whole this novel delivered. The author has a great command of metaphor and descriptive language. It took me halfway through the story to realize she reminded me of Stephen R Donaldson's style, if a little less heavy. I would recommend this novel to friends I know have a higher expectation of a book than simply descending for a few hours into fast food writing.

jumbled suspence

I enjoyed this book. However, I found it difficult to follow. The writer had too many characters which I felt were poorly tracked and identified. I couldn't keep track of who was who, and/ or where they fitted into the story. I feel this is a failure on the part of the writer. She was graphic in her descriptions of gore and torture. Some of that is difficult for me, but I understand that most other readers love that stuff. The love relationship between our two principal players was also poorly defined. I couldn't understand why on earth they liked each other. It seemed they barely knew one another. Suspenseful? Yes. Confusing? Also yes.

Good luck if you like this type of book, but I simply could not keep going with it to conclusion.

Neither my wife nor I could make it past the first CD. We then waited a few months, and we restarted the audiobook, and could not make it past the second CD. Listening to the book was a painful experience. I bought the audiobook based on favorable reviews, but it was not my cup of tea.

Pretty good

I agree with elements of both top two reviews (positive and critical) - I'd give this a three and a half, if I could. Still, as a debut novel I'm happy to round up. I also think J Chow's comment about the male protagonist is a fair criticism - the author works so hard making the reader worry about him that it is difficult to believe he would have gotten the job in the first place.

Good premise but I had to slog through it.

The book had an intersting and unique storyline but page-after-page-after-page went by with the feeling like something was going to happen...but nothing does.

The third and possibly final part of the Bloodland, Winterland and Graveland trilogy see's Glynn shift his gaze away from Ireland towards the tumultuous world of high finance in New York. Other reviews have noted the prescience of Glynn in his timely exploration of the events that unfold when disenchanted citizens rebel against the people they deem to be the architects of the current global financial crisis.

I consumed this brilliant piece of thrilling action over just 5 nights of non-stop reading. It rivals a TV box set for addictive qualities as you always want to read one more chapter.

As with the previous installments in the trilogy, the narrative moves seamlessly between characters including reporter Ellen Dorsey, who fans will remember from her brief cameo in Bloodland, Frank Bishop a washed up by-product of recession hit America, and the legendary James Vaughan, the powerful and mysterious CEO of Oberon Capital Group.

Without revealing too much, the role of Lizzie and subsequently the actions of her father Frank happened without significant explanation or even examination of what really drove them to act. Unusually for Glynn's books, this part of the novel felt loose and rushed as he sought to wrap up events.

In light of recent events in Boston, perhaps in hindsight these characters should have been given more time to reveal the reasons for their actions with only passing mention afforded to the two main characters who sparked off the novels events with a series of killings on the streets of New York.

Fans of Glynn's work will really enjoy Graveland and his style remains as fascinating and fluid as ever. The Irishman is a craftsman of the tension based thriller and I look forward to what follows the trilogy.

From page one, this book draws you into the fast pace. There is a need that seems to grow as the book goes on. Raven is a hired hand. He is tracking a war criminal, or at least that's what he thought. Now he finds out his mission isn't what it seems to be. The book is quite believable, which is scary. The book has a little bit of everything, lovely women, Nazis, Nazi assassins, politicians who are crooked as an "S". The multiple plot lines are written so well that you don't get confused as to what is going on. Anton has been running for twenty years. He somehow keeps ahead of Interpol. Italy, Spain, Ireland and now America in on the list. This is about a hunt for a real life mass murderer. Raven, trusted by the Interpol agents is unknowingly a ruthless, high paid assassin..

On top of that we have a priest who is hiding an awful secret. A young woman whose husband isn't what he appears. Then we have the big one, a slain American president. Somehow the author weaves a web that connects the innocents with the criminals. As you're reading you don't even realize it. How long can all of this go on? Will the day come when it will all blow apart? Will everyone's secrets come to light? Even though this book is mostly fiction is based on a true crime character. The book is riveting, it's really scary, it's believable and it could happen.

no fun at the end anymore

Had a good start but the story got halfway through out of control. Got the impression that the author wasnt quite sure which genre to stay in.

Narration was fine, however, a bit overdone particularly in regards to the accents.

Dark Humor and Dirty Dealings

What made the experience of listening to Turnabouts the most enjoyable?

The narrator was very good at bringing all of the characters in the story to life and the voices of the characters were completely different from her straight narrative voice. She has a rich and clear style of delivery. The audio sound quality was very good with no distracting noises or "breathy" sounds. I enjoyed the shorter length of the book I was able to listen to it in one sitting.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I wouldn't say it kept me on the edge of my seat but it certainly kept my attention! The writer has a great sarcastic sense and the plot was dark with some great humor. The characters were completely amoral - there were no distinct good or bad guys in the usual sense.

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked the part where Rich went to the fortune teller and ended up being in on yet another dirty secret! I won't be a spoiler, but it was quite an unexpected twist!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Extreme no, consistent, yes. I found the humor and the characters dark and deviant. And the plot development went along quite smoothly with some unexpected twists. I was impressed by the narrator's ability to smoothly transition between male and female character voices, and accents, and the interpretation she gave to the characters was very good.

Any additional comments?

This book has some pretty graphic language, sexual inferences, and violence. I found it was essential to the story and was not offended. Overall, a very enjoyable listen.

I will never look at Civil War re-enactors in the same way ever again.

When I saw the ad for this book that said something about a high diver who crosses paths with the Dixie mafia, I knew I had to read this book. I havenât read all of Elmore Leonard's novels (yet), but this feels like maybe a high water mark. It's full of crazy humor, wry observations on character and American culture, and you just never know which way the plot is going to twist next. His books are not dark visions. Leonard usually avoids needlessly killing off his characters or depriving them of success if they deserve it. In all these ways this is a near perfect book and entertaining beyond just about anything that Iâve read for a long time.

Author knows his stuff!

I grew up across the Mississipi line, in northwest Alabama. Knew Tishomingo, the county, the town, and the state park very well-- even spent a night or two in one of their fine country jails. What I'm leading up to is that the author got it right. The characters, the lingo, the rhythm and rhyme;. Elmore got the flavor of that area pretty much on the nose. At least as much as a non-Tishomingan can get such a complicated, nuanced thing as southern culture in this particular neck of the woods. Mr. Leonard even delved into the traveling Carney life pert need as good as could be. Bravo! Author! Author!

The characters are so realistic. The story is a page turner. I love the sarcastic wit. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the horror genre.

Wow... Think I held my breathe the whole book!

I loved this book. The narration was excellent and the story totally sucked me in from the first chapter. The author seemed to have such an understanding of how it would be to have a stalker. It was terrifying.

Teeth grindingly intense and consistently gripping

From the moment I started listening to this book I was completely drawn in. Clarissa is an ordinary, slightly mousey woman who is seemingly over-obsessed by the unwanted attention from a colleague. Rafe is a man who on the face of it, is a very attractive proposition. He is attractive, successful and a highly intelligent college professor, but for some reason Clarissa is completely repulsed by his advances. The story of their relationship is brilliantly interwoven with Clarissa's experience as a member of a jury, hearing a particularly nasty case involving sexual violence. Throughout this, there is a heavy air of psychological and physical malevolence which is completely gripping.

This story cleverly explores the fine line between a woman actively seeking male attention and receiving attention from an unwanted source and it pulls no punches in describing the horror of physical violence and the helplessness of victims when seeking protection and justice. This maintains momentum throughout and neatly avoids an obvious ending.
