Phoney "South African" Accent Adds Nothing

What possesses the British producers of South African novels to insist that their narrators read the story in a "South African" accent? Insanity or colonial arrogance?

Firstly, Charlotte Strevens can't speak Afrikaans or get some basic South African words or expressions right. Secondly, her phoney SA accent gets in the way of the story, and adds nothing but inauthenticity. I enjoyed the book in spite of the accent, since she is clearly a good narrator when she speaks in her own voice.

Margie Orford's novel is not easy to listen to, because of the subject matter, and some of the phrases she used are repeated when not necessary. Still, the story and the plot are credible and realistic, making the subject of the novel even more depressing. Don't buy this book if you want something to cheer you up.

Red Love is a truly remarkable novel.

Based on the Rosenberg case, the novel, Red Love paints a truer picture of Jewish leftism from the 30's through the 50's than any history book could possibly do. David Evanier has distilled the essence of what it was like in that era. This immensely readable novel made so much of that period more understandable to me. I have recommended and even purchased copies for my friends.

Lots of politics, little love

I found the politics in this interesting, but it is a work of fiction, structured as researched non-fiction. I felt little empathy with any of the characters and the politics nave in the extreme. The sort of book that might be set for a text in a literature course - good for you, but not a lot of fun.

Probably the most confusing, disjointed book I have ever read. Read it cover to cover and when I finished I was still unable to put a meaning, gather information or enlightenment on the search for communists from 1920 to 1960.

A very satisfying novelization of the Rosenberg spy case.

This book is a fiction treatment of the Ethel and Julius Rosenberg spy case. The author gives episodic vignettes of major and minor players and provides a satisfying portrait of the time surrounding these events (and much later.)

By using vignettes in short chapters, the effect was that of a nice tapestry. (Most characters were too shallow to follow in a straight narrative.)

I had often wondered what motivated many of the foolish people who followed the Old Left. This book answered many of my questions.

My only regret is that some character appeared too briefly. But all spoke with a chord of truth that I had not previously heard.

Wonderfully original

This intriguing novel offers insight into Tibet and its Chinese occupation as well Buddhism. It is original and exciting as Maggie, a British camera woman, accompanies three monks on their quest for the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. Very well done and definitely makes me want to read Paul Adams' other works.

A book of nonsense

The socalled "occupation of Tibet" doesn't exist at all. Ok you can say that, if you call Edinburgh an occupied city by the englishmen, and North America a continent occupied by the whites.

Good read

Just a well written solid book.

Jake Sommers is a PI.

His office is just West of Bryant Point.

Bryant Point is a real quiet neighborhood. African Americans, Whites and Hispanics live there. The attitude is live and let live. Never any problems in Bryant Point.

That all changes when a young African American woman is shot and killed by a Police Officer. The officer says its self defense. Thats just one of the things that start happening in Bryant Point.

On his way to see Captain Huddelston, Dallas PD, Jake hits a dog. A dog he saves and decides to adopt. Tug is the name he gives the dog and Tug will be a hero before the story is done.

WE have a dark soul named Mancini. A dark soul that will do anything to facilitate his making money.

Loads of bad guys in this one and an out of this world scheme. One super PI and his crew who do what it takes to save the day.

A great read and five stars all the way.

Gripping tale from beginning to end! The characters are down to earth and easy to relate with. Dark Soul is the continuation of the Jake Somers detective series which was introduced in Mr. Castle's previous book "Pecan Gap". This book will make you want to stay up all night reading. Eagerly awaiting the next book by this author.

This is a great story. This author gets better with every book he writes. I really liked it and read it right through. It is clean with no raw areas. I know you will love it as I did. I may even read it a second time.

I read Mr. Castles first book, Pecan Gap, and it was excellent. Our author certainly seems to have created an outstanding series with, Jack Somers, as the star. This book had all the elements you would look for in a mystery read and a few extras. It was fast moving and had a special personal touch, to me that is the glue that pulls you in. I am pleaSed to highly recommend this read and look forward to the next. Well done,Mr. Castle, keep it up.
