Allen Davis' 1st book was good, this one is great!

Would you consider the audio edition of Not Our Children! to be better than the print version?

My wife bought the paper back. She liked it as well as I did the Audio. Combined, they fill any gaps that your imagination might miss.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

This book doesn't let you relax from the start. You know that something is about to happen and there is nothing that can be done to stop it. Made me anxious from the beginning. I can't say that for most of the suspense books that I have read or listened to.

What does John Stamper bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

For sure! There are some terrible men in this book and he puts life into them. You can't feel their presence. Since the author brought the same characters over from Conchita's Eyes, and John Stamper narrated it too, he knows these characters well. Its convincing.d

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, and I did.

Left me waiting for the next book from the Author and Narrator. Hope they team up again.

Oh dear

I found the main character supercilious and tedious. The account of the general vanity and stupidity of her peer group juxtaposed against her own supposed independence of mind and practicality made the narrative irritating and predictable. Unfortunately the narrator manage to alienate me further. Possibly a good read for a slightly paranoid 10 year old. I gave up.

Captivating family drama

What did you like best about this story?

This is a family drama following Zoe (a Western visitor to Africa) as she investigates the rape of an African child who has Downs Syndrome. It is not a fast paced thriller, but a sedate drama which I found strangely compelling. Zoe isn't an especially likeable character, but her investigation into the case, finding out who the child is, the obstacles faced trying to get prosecution and the lead up to the trial are all gripping. Unfortunately for me, the book peaks with the trial and the last 2 hours were rather boring. It becomes more of a comment about poverty and how wealthy countries should pay. It focuses on Zoe and her relationship with her father. After building up to the trial it felt like a lot of unnecessary after blurb, but I guess it does complete the story.

The narrator was okay, there were a couple of glaring mis-pronunciations early on, but I was very forgiving because of the great story. Overall highly recommended.

Very enjoyable

I enjoyed this novel, likeable characters - or hate - able ones as appropriate, and the story was well told, bringing up some issues that are sometime skimmed over.

Not one of my very favourite books, but a good read.

If You're Going to Kidnap the Wrong Victim, Don't Grab One With Superpowers

The Wrong Girl is your typical abduction tale in relation to the crime, but not so with the characters. The two kidnappers are pretty cartoon like in their makeup, in fact one of them reminds me of cartoons, where there's a big dumb side kick that usually utters duuuuuhhh, I don't know boss, what will I do when repeating the insult the sidekick just didn't get. The young female victim is not only a child prodigy in IQ, but wouldn't have been out of place on the TV show Heroes. She can enter the mind of anyone, make them good at math or whatever subject they are studying amongst other things, while making witty commentary throughout the book. She can also communicate through her mind with her mother, which is how the mother knows she was kidnapped in the first place. I didn't find the mother acted like a mother would if her daughter was kidnapped, even with her superpowers. I can't see someone reading their daughter's diary and having a good time discovering what her daughter got up to at school, while not seemingly being affected by not knowing if her daughter will make it out of her dilemma alive. The intended target's father (as the title implies they kidnap the wrong girl) is also a little too nice to be believable as well.

But still this is a work of fiction, and it is an entraining read. That's the most important element you want with a fiction novel.

light, easy reading

Good book, good storyline, but too predictable. I usually read a few chapters at a time and it seemed like the chapters in this book were very long. Very few typos, which can be distracting. However, for some reason I could not go back to re-read previous pages in this e-book. I did not like that at all as sometimes I will come upon something and think I may have missed an important detail, or if it had been a few days since I left off and want a quick refresher. This book is more suitable for younger readers - teens or early 20's.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed this book and found it quite entertaining. It's a bit different than most other mystery type novels in that the perpetrators are rather bumbling and not the brightest bulbs in the bunch.

An unsatisfying story about a murder

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Other reviewers have commented on the odd style in which the book is written. I found the repetitive style resonant of the repetition of swimming practice and the routines of being involved in competitive swimming, so found the style unusual but apt.

The characters were fairly sketchy; I didn't feel I got to know any of them beyond Annie's greying hair and Chris's admirable rear.

The murders happened to characters the reader knows little or nothing about. The murderer's motivation isn't explored.

This could have been so much more.

Would you ever listen to anything by Yannick Murphy again?

Yes; the author is undoubtedly talented and I enjoyed the unusual style.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Probably not.

This is this is this is too much!

The style if this is over and over is annoying as hell! What any of it had to do with swimming competitions escapes me. I didn't like it.
