In this stunning, compulsively listenable psychological drama, a killer swims in a public pool unnoticed by his future victims. A woman learns a terrible secret too dangerous to keep. And a mother prepares to do anything to keep her children safe.
This is a novel about a woman. About a mother. About a marriage. About a murder.
In the brightly lit public pool the killer swims and watches. Amongst the mothers cheering on their swim team daughters is Annie. Watching her two girls race, she's thinking of other things. Her husband's emotional distance. Her lost brother. The man she's drawn to. Then she learns a terrible secret. Now her everyday cares and concerns seem meaningless. Annie knows she has to act. Above all, she must protect her children.
Compulsively listenable, it takes listeners on a journey where none could guess the final outcome.
Critic Reviews:
"Yannick Murphy, while being one of our most daring and original writers, is first and foremost an exquisitely attuned observer of human behavior." (Dave Eggers)
Members Reviews:
An unsatisfying story about a murder
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Other reviewers have commented on the odd style in which the book is written. I found the repetitive style resonant of the repetition of swimming practice and the routines of being involved in competitive swimming, so found the style unusual but apt.
The characters were fairly sketchy; I didn't feel I got to know any of them beyond Annie's greying hair and Chris's admirable rear.
The murders happened to characters the reader knows little or nothing about. The murderer's motivation isn't explored.
This could have been so much more.
Would you ever listen to anything by Yannick Murphy again?
Yes; the author is undoubtedly talented and I enjoyed the unusual style.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Probably not.
This is this is this is too much!
The style if this is over and over is annoying as hell! What any of it had to do with swimming competitions escapes me. I didn't like it.
