Mamoru Oshii's 1987 live-action film, The Red Spectacles, the first in his surrealist sci-fi Kerberos Saga, has received a 4K restoration and will screen at New York's Metrograph starting November 21. Previously difficult to view in high quality, the restoration was made possible by a successful crowdfunding campaign initiated by Oshii. The film, which blends absurdity, political allegory, and existential themes, follows an exiled former paramilitary officer returning to a bizarre and changed Tokyo.
