On May 31, 2014, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, two 12-year-old girls lured their best friend Payton Leutner into the woods and stabbed her 19 times in the torso in an attempt to become proxies of the fictional character Slender Man. They believed by sacrificing her, they were saving their families from being killed by the entity and that they could live happily ever after in his castle with him in an enchanted forest.

The Hinterkaifeck murders occurred on the evening of March 31, 1922, in which six inhabitants of a small Bavarian farmstead, located approximately 70 kilometres north of Munich, Germany, were murdered by an unknown assailant who some believe may have been living secretly in the family home before committing the brutal attack.

On today's episode of Gin and Sin, Jo brings us the bizarre case of  John Emil List.

List was an American mass murderer and long-time fugitive. On November 9, 1971, List slaughtered his wife, mother, and three children at their home in Westfield, New Jersey and then seemingly disappeared without a trace.

The body of Elisa Lam, who was a student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, was recovered from a water tank atop the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles on February 19, 2013, after guests of the Hotel started complaining about the taste and colour of the tap water. 

How she got into the tank and how the latch was closed behind her was extremely suspicious - and that paired with the eerie CCTV footage of Lam in the hotel elevator in which it appears she's communicating with something visible only to her, is truly chilling.
