  • Sylvia Tennant on Design, Size Inclusivity + The Business of Storytelling

Phoebe sits down with Sylvia to explore the role of storytelling in her personal business journey, including its integration into Zaleska's design process, branding, workflow, and marketing. Listeners follow Sylvia's journey from high school art teacher to maker to curve model as she offers guidance on how to use your personal story to create the business (and life) you want. Sylvia highlights intuitive reasoning and storytelling as meaningful business tool, and explains how all makers and business owners can use narrative and truth-telling to take their business to new heights. She also offers practical guidelines for brands on how to best approach size inclusivity via transparency and receptivity.

    Noteworthy quotes:

[14:11] I remember asking myself this question: Will you regret not finding out if you can do it? And the answer was a wholehearted, "YES."

[24:44] What I can say is that if you can't tell a story with your product, you're going to struggle.

[29:41] There's beauty in being able to scale your business to the place where you can live the life you want to live.

[37:14] Figure out what you really love about your business, what lights you up, what you want to do when you wake up every single morning. Whatever that isn't: Give that job to someone else.

[41:12] I don't feel overwhelmed, because I've optimized my systems.

[43:57] To be able to walk into a store and buy something off the rack is not a luxury that has been afforded to my body type.

  • The To-Do List is Canceled

The to-do list is a hotly contested topic. Are you holding onto yours for dear life? In this episode, Phoebe explores why the to-do list is more harmful than helpful and suggests that it be disposed of—forever. Tune in for an honest examination of how the antiquated to-do list method is creating more stress and anxiety in our lives, why it becomes so linked up with our sense of worth, and how we can all instead take steps to a more holistic (and hopefully, healthier) approach to productivity.

    Noteworthy quotes:
    • The thing about the to-do is it is never done. There is always more to do. Having a visual representation of all the things you need to do and can never finish is harmful.
    • Your worth is not measured by your productivity.
    • Thinking about the week in a holistic sense makes space for being human. We want to feel complete at the end of the day and have space in our brain to rest.

    Episode notes:

    • [05:43 ] What in the world is a craft-based designer?
    • [14:10] How to stay inspired in a digital world.
    • [21:35] The three tactical tips you need to pitch and secure big name brands as partners
    • [33:03] How has your business pivoted since COVID?
    • [47:21] What advice do you have for people who want to turn their creative passions into a business?

    Selected Quotes:

    • [ 11:32] " I get these ideas and I get so passionate about them and I just have to see them through. Life's short you just gotta like to follow your dreams," Kitiya says.
    • [14:19] "I think it's really easy to think that you're looking for inspiration as you're scrolling through Pinterest or scrolling through Instagram feed. But really you're just absorbing the ideas of other people. And I know that's what inspiration is, but it's really hard when you then want to use your inspiration to create original work if the core inspiration came from somebody else's work, because it starts to form this rehashing cycle, where your work starts looking like everything else on Pinterest," she mentions.
    • [25:27] "These brands get pitched all day long and have multiple campaigns running for different aspects of their business all the time. So you wanna make it really easy for them and clear for them to see exactly how they could use you," she discusses.

    • [30:48 "It's not just about what you can get from them [clients], but it's about how you can nurture [that relationship] once they are your client and keep them on your list," Kitiya says.

    • [45:18] "Self care and well-being need to come first! Because if you don't feel great like that, then you're not going to be able to be your most creative and authentic self and that's the thing that brands and clients want to work with you for." She says.

[47:34] "First thing to do is just start putting your work out there! Don't worry too much about having a fully realized brand from the get-go, before you begin, because you might never feel ready then." Kitiya says.
