Battle Royale

Before we started recording, we talked about whether or not Battle Royale (2000) was an action or horror movie and we landed on action movie with extremely horrific tones. Pete's main talking point was that unlike a big explodie action movie where grunts are mowed down by the dozens, Battle Royale gives every murdered victim a name and number so that regardless how you feel about that particular character, you still get to know them. Not only are children killing each other but you also kinda know who they are which is where the horror come into place. The subject of a forced deathmatch has been covered by films like "Lord of the Flies," "The Running Man," "The Hunger Games" and even video games like "PUBG" and "Fortnight" but what Battle Royale does is lean heavily on the brutality and hopelessness of the situation. It's a recommended movie from both of us, just know it's not a movie you're going to have fun with at any point.

A cop on the edge crosses paths with a man on a mission to find his sister and no one on the streets is safe! Roddy Piper is Officer Roddy Piper and Billy Blanks is basically The Punisher in 1994’s Back in Action! This one flirts with the “Buddy Cop” theme but they're not buddies and only one of them is a cop! Billy Blanks is opening cans of Whoop-Ass on anyone dumb enough to get his way. Roddy Piper is throwing clotheslines and brawling without hesitation. This movie goes wild with gang violence, Martial arts, guns, and explosions at every turn…but can it survive a pointless forbidden love story and lame bad guys?! WARNING: VAN VIOLENCE

If you didn't live through the Satanic Panic of the 1980s this film may not land with you.  Those of us who remember the ridiculous reactions that parents had to anything remotely "evil" will certainly get why this movie has the potential to scare your pants off.  The trailer for this film scared a 14-year-old Pete so bad that he waited to watch it until he picked it for this show.  Kids are such chicken shits. If you like Rosemary's Baby or The Omen, then give The Believers a shot. There's an EPIC dummy fall at the end that's worth every bit of this slow burn.

She's just a small town girl living in a denim world. She takes the Chrysler train going anywhere Richard Norton is! 1990s China O'Brien carries The Walking Tall torch into a new decade! China returns to her hometown to find it's corrupted by sleezeballs and when they attack her family and friends, she decides to clean it up with fists and roundhouse kicks! It doesn't hurt to have a hunky badass Richard Norton on your side, as well as a dirt bike riding silent protector named Dakota! The fight scenes go hard, the soundtrack is so damn good, and Cynthia Rothrock is an AMAZING actress Dustin!

After the success of "MONTH OF ACTION" Charlie and Pete need a little break from all the action movies and decide to level set with a couple of horror movies that epitomize the Give Me Back narrative. Memories of the VHS covers for Slaughterhouse and Popcorn live rent free in the minds of your GMB hosts invoking both intense fear and morbid curiosity in their young minds. To our delight, both films paired surprisingly well and their late 80s/early 90s charm just made watching these films a real treat.

For you, the day B-ACTION graced your playlist was the most important day of your life, but for us…it was a Friday. Now get on the sticks and choose your favorite character because we're covering 1994's Street Fighter! We can't get enough of Raul Julia's iconic performance in this movie. Cool moves, well placed comedy, and larger than life characters make for a fun time! That's not to say there aren't a few strikes against this classic…we're looking at you Blanka. But it's not enough to bring our spirits down. Now do you wanna go home, or do you wanna go with us!?

This week Charlie is joined by two special guests, Derrick from Bad Movies Worse People and Capt. Steven from Bucket of Chum podcast. The guys cover Edge of Tomorrow...aka Live Die Repeat, a movie that takes the time-loop premise and straps it into a mech suit. Tom Cruise plays a PR officer with zero combat experience who gets dumped into an invasion against alien invaders called Mimics. He dies (spectacularly) in minutes, then wakes up at the start of the same day....over and over. Each reset, he learns, adapts, and gets a little better. Emily Blunt plays the “Angel of Verdun"....his drill sergeant and guide through the loop. What makes it work is the balance: it’s funny, brutal, and genuinely clever about how repetition changes a person. It’s Groundhog Day meets Saving Private Ryan with sci-fi technology. The action is tight and the story earns its payoff because failure actually matters. This is definitely one everyone should check out.

New Orleans is just cool, man. The only thing cooler might be Sylvester Stallone. Put that man in the bayou or the French Quarter and you've got our attention! 2012’s Bullet to the Head feels like it should have been a hit, but somehow it fell through the cracks! Now we get to cover it on B-ACTION! Walter Hill brings his signature style to this one with tons of brutality and conflict. Jason Momoa makes an early career appearance as a reckless mercenary and doesn't get the screen time he deserves. Speaking of which, a wild Christian Slater was sighted! With a banging soundtrack to pull it all together, we can “laissez les bons temps rouler”!

SURPRISE B*TCHES! Did yall really think we were going to let B-Action and Gimme Back have all of the extra fun this month?! WRONG-O!

Since I got to torture Pete with Armageddon, I got to thinking... what if we did TWO Month of Action picks and let Pete have his very own, too? We release it Friday night on our week and give everyone an authentic late-night feel to fit the vibe of the show. As you'd expect, it didn't take much convincing for Pete to jump aboard.

Pete was gonna Pete, and he picked the most Pete action pick Pete could ever pick! The Big Bird Cage is a 70's women in prison movie starring the incomparable Pam Grier and a very young Sid Haig. This film has the reputation of being somewhat of a comedy, so do yourself a favor and go into it with that in mind. This film is wild, crazy, and just what AHCRAP needed to end Month of Action. As per usual with us, this conversation is just as outrageous as the movie we're covering.
