  • 215: Giving Back Insights #71 — How can I use my giving back to win more business? with Rob Lowe

Welcome to the 71st episode of Giving Back Insights, my Thursday solo show where I talk about how our guests and their charities serve others, to explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and to share. Today I’m discussing How can I use my giving back to win more business? Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

    Key Takeaways:

The Gentleman in today’s cover is Seth Godin.  He’s a marketer, entrepreneur, author and teacher.  He talks a lot about authenticity.

Marketing is about building trust and adding value not interrupting their lives

“Making promises and keeping them is a great way to build a brand.” helps me to address the biggest question I was asked ”How can I use my giving back to win more business?”

Why is that?  Because in this case, the promise is to YOURSELF.

“In a crowded marketplace, fitting in is a failure. In a busy marketplace, not standing out is the same as being invisible.”  This is about authenticity.

    The brand is you!

CSR: corporate social responsibility.  Businesses giving back in a professional way to their community wherever it is.

When you choose to give back, is it based on knowing that you will get something in return?  If so, you’re not going to win more business. In fact, you’ll lose business.

Wherever your community is sharing what you have, giving back to the community, making difference to peoples live that is what we are talking about here.

The great way to standing out is to be a part of them community.

I am working on a new program, Give & Grow Rich.- How to transform your business into a force for good.  It’s based on the wisdom our guests have shared. More on that to come.

People are good and people always want to take part something bigger than themselves.  So help them do that!

Remember: Always err on the side of love & kindness.

  • 213: Giving Back Insights #70 — Growth comes in many forms with Rob Lowe

Welcome to the 70th episode of Giving Back Insights, my Thursday solo show where I talk about how our guests and their charities serve others, to explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and to share. Today I’m discussing Growth comes in many forms. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

    Key Takeaways:

This week I was lucky to be around for some major growth.

My oldest son Carson, he’s in the brown Patagonia shirt.  He’s got his arm around my younger son Tyler at a gathering before his prom.  He’s made a choice for his present as well as his future and I’m so proud of him.

I am so proud of Carson. He’s a smart, friendly guy and I am really proud that he has made a choice. He has chosen a different environment to focus on his success instead of expectations from others.

Midori Verity is next to my two scalliwag boys.  She’s the best-selling author of Secrets to a Kickass Marriage: Marriage Guide to Living Your Dream Life, a marriage & relationship coach with two great shows, and happily married to a great guy for over 30 years.  I went to her inaugural “Couples and Bubbles” event at Amista Vineyards and it was great. Fantastic wine, a great environment, fun people, and a kickoff for her into the next stage of her career and life.

Midori is not only a coach, she is a practitioner. She helps a lot of people re-energize their relationships.

I feel so fortunate to get support from people around me.

Kate Schell, my accountability coach, and Ryan Lee, the leader of Freedym

    - How we make things happen. Helps me focus on the action and overcoming the fear.

I am also showing respect to all the following person and they help me continuously to grow

Jamie Moran, Alannah Avelin, John Nguyen, Henry Serrano, Judy Ban Greenman, Mark Jala

I feel so fortunate to GIVE support to people around me.

Where is YOUR growth happening?  Growth can be scary. Know that you have cheerleaders, people rooting for you to succeed.  Face your fear and move towards it --- stepping outside your comfort zone is where the magic happens.

Remember: Always err on the side of love & kindness.

  • 211: Giving Back Insights #69 — The Way of the Burrito - RIP Coach Peyo with Rob Lowe

Welcome to the 69th episode of Giving Back Insights, my Thursday solo show where I talk about how our guests and their charities serve others, to explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and to share. Today I’m discussing about Coach Peyo. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

    Key Takeaways:

Last week I talked about two men of substance.  A few days ago, we lost one.

John Peyovich was an Albany High School Hall of Fame athlete, a loving husband, a devoted father, and both of my sons’ favorite coach.  He was loud and funny, sharp as a tack, and could tell you stories from decades back like they were yesterday.

He was also a kind, caring and gentle man who drew people in like a magnet.  A while back I was honored to co-host the Peyo Love Fest with my friends Tim and Chris.  It was a fundraiser for Peyo, and the room was buzzing with anticipation of his arrival. Not only did they know him, everyone had their own stories about Peyo.  It was like seeing the Pope --- hour after hour after hour of people waiting to be with Peyo, to see him, to hear him, to touch him, to be close to him.

One of the darndest things I remember was hearing about these burritos he made.  Breakfast burritos, filled with bacon, eggs, cheese and potatoes. EVERYONE was talking about Peyo’s burritos.  That picture of him is manning the stove and barking at someone, probably one of his kids or Kerri.

Well, those burritos weren’t just about a tasty meal.  John used them to connect with people, reaching out to feed them, then engaging them with his energy and enthusiasm.  Those burritos were an extension of his love of life and others.

I saw a short video recently from Jay Shetty talking to a group of graduating students.  He said, “I want you to be able to create meaningful, purposeful, fulfilling lives for yourselves and learn how to use that to make an impact and a difference in the lives of others.” What a beautiful life Peyo had, to show others how to live simply by being himself.

I’ve left a link to a short video about Peyo’s life below.  It’ll tell you a little bit about him and how he lived life.  If it’s in your heart and in your means, please lend a hand to Peyo’s family using the fundraising link in the show notes or go to YouCaring.com and search for “Peyo”.

Thank you, Peyo.  I love you, I miss you, and I’ll see you when it’s my time.  Find my Dad, give him a burrito, and tell them about my boys.

  • 210: You Cannot Be Silenced — Dr. Rosenna Bakari with Talking Tree Survivors

Dr. Rosenna Bakari, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and incest, started Talking Trees in 2010 to help provide support to survivors of childhood sexual abuse and incest and to help them live openly. Rosenna recently wrote her memoir, Too Much Love Is Not Enough, which details her silence and struggle to overcome her trauma years later in her adult life. The book will be be released on April 12th. On the show, Rosenna discusses why she was compelled to start Talking Trees, how the organization helps victims and survivors, and why it was time to write a memoir.

    Key Takeaways:

[5:15] Why did Rosenna write her book about her personal experience surviving abuse?

[12:20] One of the reasons why surviving abuse is so hard is because survivors have a lack of support to talk about the abuse they’ve just been through.

[13:55] People want to keep telling you that you’re ‘okay’, but the truth is it’s okay not to be okay. You don’t have to put on the mask just for them.

[16:00] Rosenna explains why she decided not to write a ‘how to’ book.

[19:00] The sad part is, no one is going to rescue you and save you from the trauma. However, the good news is, you can rescue yourself.

[24:15] What were some of the hardest parts to write in the book for Rosenna?

[28:20] Why did Rosenna start Talking Trees?

[30:40] Rosenna did not understand how there were 40 million survivors (in America) and yet she felt so isolated and alone with her pain. Where were they??

[31:35] Did you know that 80% of people in addiction counseling have a background of childhood sexual abuse?

[34:30] How do you talk about something that you’re not supposed to talk about?

[41:40] How has Talking Trees helped the survivors of abuse?

[45:30] Rosenna offers some advice for those who are facing the aftermath of abuse, in their adult life.

Today I’m discussing about Men of substance. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

    Key Takeaways:

Today’s guests are two gentlemen and rascals at the same time Jeff Kostermans and Bill Verity. Both are a great man of substance. Jeff Kostermans, friends for decades Bill Verity, friends for months. Bill and I got a chance to spend some time together in San Diego at the 2018 GIS and he did something that made a huge difference for me. I got a chance recently to work with the Miracle Message team from San Francisco. Miracle Messages provides a wonderful service, they communicate short messages from our homeless neighbors to their loved ones to connect them, sometimes after being separated for decades. I haven’t seen my brothers for sooo long. Almost 18 years. My message to my brother was “we miss you and you are very special to us.” Bill shared some deeply personal with me about his own family, and got me to re-think “the best that I can do.” Jeff Kostermans, this guy is devoted to family, God and country. He is super freaking smart. His purpose is working with The Honor Foundation to help special services military make the transition back to civilian life an adventure. Two amazing men of substance. I am too lucky to have them in my life. Thank you so much, Jeff and Bill. What is that drives you? What is that is in your heart?

  • 208: Purpose Involves Other People — Lisa Avery with Work is Vocation

Today’s episode is a bit different. Rob welcomes Lisa Avery on to the show to talk about the positive impacts of giving back and finding your sense of purpose. Lisa is a positive psychologist, writer, speaker, and coach. Lisa’s purpose is to help others gain greater clarity, confidence, and authenticity in their lives. On the show, she discusses the four factors that go into finding your deepest sense of meaning, why thinking about your funeral is actually a good thing, and so much more!

    Key Takeaways:

[5:15] We already have everything we need. We just need to access that.

[6:15] The greatest pain in your life is actually your greatest source of power.

[8:55] For many people, they have a lot of tension when it comes to being the best version of themselves and using that power to make a positive impact on the world.

[10:35] How can you best lose your ego?

[16:10] Why did Lisa create Work Is Vocation?

[18:25] Ask yourself: What do you want and why do you want it?

[19:55] Lisa explains how there’s two different types of happiness.

[22:50] Death is a taboo subject, however, when people think about the fact that they’re not going to be around forever, they actually start thinking about what’s the most important to them.

[23:00]  What do you want people to say about you at your funeral?

[27:00] How do you best find your ’deepest sense’ of meaning?

[28:15] When you know what your strengths are, you can quickly determine what your values are. Lisa explains further.

[32:25] It’s never too late to acquire a new skill!

[37:15] Lisa explains what ‘autonomy’ really means.

[42:35] By the way, it’s okay to not feel happy all the time! It’s actually not normal to be happy all the time.

[49:35] If you feel fear, then try to reframe it as excitement.

[58:30] With the men that Lisa works with, is it harder for them to be vulnerable compared to the women?

[1:03:30] The universe will give you want you need, but you have to be open to receive it.

[1:06:15] Once somebody finds their purpose, how do they stay on that path?

[1:12:40] Lisa asks Rob some questions! What excites Rob on a daily basis about his life?
