Food is hugely important in China, which goes some way to explaining the current popularity of an app that allows users to order takeaway home-cooked meals. The Home-Cook app was launched 18 months ago by a start-up based in Beijing. These days, some 50,000 private cooks prepare dishes the way their grandmothers taught them for 1.2 million customers.

Palm-fringed beaches and turquoise sea: 16-year-old Milenia lives in what looks like paradise - Las Galeras, Dominican Republic. She likes to spend her afternoons playing dominoes with friends. But during hurricane season they steer well clear of the beach.

Found in the Amazon River, the arapaima is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. It's considered a delicacy in Peru but features less frequently on restaurant menus now that overfishing has left stocks badly depleted.
