In wenigen Wochen steht der irische Nationalfeiertag St. Patrick’s Day an.

16 – Ireland in Frankfurt – from strangers to friends with Ray Madden from the Irish Pub Bornheim
Gude and Dia Dhuit! Welcome to this episode of Global Village 069 - The World at Home in Frankfurt!
Ireland's national holiday, St. Patrick's Day, is just a few weeks away. On March 17, as every year, Ireland fans in Frankfurt will don their green and make their way to the nearest Irish pub.
I love the Emerald Isle and hence was delighted to talk to the wonderful Ray Madden. Ray runs the Irish Pub Bornheim together with his business partner Enda O'Connell, and anyone who has ever been there can confirm this: Walking in there feels like going to see old friends.
Ray and I talk about the great offer in the Irish Pub Bornheim for anyone who misses the island and why Ray is especially committed to the Irish sport of Gaelic football in Frankfurt. And of course he tells us his own personal story and why he has been a Frankfurt resident for almost 30 years.

SHOWNOTES

The Intercultural Week Frankfurt - The World is at Home in Frankfurt
Gude and welcome to this special episode of Global Village 069 - the world at home in Frankfurt.
This episode will be a bit different than usual. Because today, for once, it's not about traveling to a specific country within Frankfurt. Instead, this time we’re taking a look back at the Intercultural Week.
The Intercultural Week takes place every year in the last week of September. The aim is for associations, initiatives and private individuals who are committed to intercultural diversity to present themselves with events in their city.
Very important to note: Even if the Intercultural Week 2023 is over, all organizations that participated in the Intercultural Week continuously offer exciting and important events!
In Frankfurt, the "IKW" was organized this year by Über den Tellerrand Frankfurt. You may remember this wonderful association from episode 7. A particularly big highlight was the ceremonial opening of the Intercultural Week Frankfurt on September 21 in the premises of the Office for Multicultural Affairs, or Amka for short.
I was there on the night and got to speak to three exciting organizations as well as our mayor Dr. Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg about why the Intercultural Week is so important for Frankfurt.
Links and contacts to the Intercultural Week and the organizations
Megalomania Theater: Off-theater in Oberrad, which campaigns against xenophobia and anti-semitism through plays, concerts and readings.
IsraAid Germany e.V.: non-profit organization that provides aid in moments of acute crisis as well as long-term psychosocial support.
Contact for the project Brückenbau - Vielfalt begegnen (Building Bridges - Encountering Diversity) in Frankfurt am Main, which provides art therapy and psychosocial counseling for refugees:
Abá e.V.: Working group for human rights based in Berger Straße. One of the association's ongoing projects is called Become part of the change. This is about intercultural mediation of sustainability and development policy, especially from the perspective of migrant women from the global south.

10 – BOOK FAIR SPECIAL – Slovenia in Frankfurt with Tanja Geike from Sava e.V.
Gude and Dober Dan! Welcome to this episode of Global Village 069 - The World at Home in Frankfurt!
Slovenia is a small country whose language is spoken by only about 2.5 million people worldwide. So, it’s not a big surprise that most of us know very little about the small nation on the northern edge of the Balkans. High time to change that. Because Slovenia is a paradise for anyone who loves unspoiled nature, hospitable people, romantic towns, extended coffee breaks and – above all – good books. And that should pretty much apply to all of us. :)
Good thing there is Sava e.V., the Slovenian cultural and educational association in Frankfurt. Located in the heart of Fechenheim, it is a focal point in our city for anyone interested in the country and its people. This year in particular, the association is BUSY because Slovenia is the Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2023 (18-22 October). Nevertheless, the lovely Tanja Geike from the board found time to talk to me about the work of Sava e.V., the magic of Slovenian culture and the special relationship of its people to literature.

Gude and Konnichiwa! Welcome to this episode of Global Village 069 - The World at Home in Frankfurt! Few cultures capture our imagination as much as Japan's. However, our Western perceptions are often distorted or fragmented. But fear not: Main Matsuri is here to rectify this very situation. Every year since 2018, this cultural festival has brought a piece of authentic Japan to the shores of the Main.
Note: Main Matsuri 2023 will take place in the next few days: from August 18-20 at Büsingpalais in Offenbach. Get your tickets here.
The wonderful Marina is one of the many volunteers at Main Matsuri. This Frankfurt native was literally born into both cultures: She is the daughter of a Japanese mother and a German father. It is particularly important to her to show a more authentic picture of her second home here in Germany. She does this, among other things, with her riveting and very entertaining Instagram account @mointokio and her podcast Maru, which she co-hosts with her Japanese friend Kaoru.
