08 - Italy in Frankfurt and the taste of home – with Giovanni Taurone

Gude and Buongiorno! Welcome to this episode of "Global Village 069 - The World at Home in Frankfurt"! Even the most famous Frankfurter of all – that’s Goethe, of course – was a huge fan of the country we visit in this episode: Bella Italia. Fortunately, for a piece of "Italy around the corner" you don’t have to look any further than Hanauer Landstraße. Because that's where you'll find Me.Ta, the wholesale and retail store for authentic Italian food and delicacies. Giovanni Taurone, who is the second generation to run the business at Me.Ta, took the time to take us on a culinary journey to the south.

          Our topics of conversation:

          • How did Me.Ta come to be and what is the philosophy behind it?
          • The rich offer and why the clientele is very multicultural
          • How his Italian parents met in Germany in the 60s
          • Why authentic Italian food is often not what people in Germany think
          • Giovanni's childhood memories of breakfast cakes and TV shows that went on for far too long
          • Why Giovanni's role at Me.Ta is an "internship that lasts to this day"
          • Why growing up with two cultures is a luxury
          • Giovanni's relationship with Frankfurt, professionally and personally

Today I'm talking with Karim Batlouni, who came to Dribbdebach from Beirut in 2017. Karim and I know each other from work and from our neighborhood. In fact, this episode kicks off a trilogy of conversation with friends from the office, and I'm very happy to share with you to the first part here.

Here's what we cover in our conversation:

                                                                                  • Adil takes us back to his childhood in multicultural Frankfurt
                                                                                  • He explains why football, more than other sports, has the potential to bring people together across all differences
                                                                                  • He tells us how football enthusiasts from Frankfurt can join the VfR
                                                                                  • Adil shares a hilarious anecdote about his trips to the super posh regatta in Henley in the UK
                                                                                  • And he reveals where we can all discover a piece of Morocco in Frankfurt
                                                                                  • I thoroughly enjoyed this interview and I hope you will, too!

Here are the links we mention in this episode:

Every episode, I speak to citizens of Frankfurt who (also) have their roots in another country and who make the small metropolis on the Main one of the greatest melting pots of all.

                                                                                          Shownotes

Jennie is originally from the UK. It was by chance that she moved to Frankfurt in 1975. In this episode, we talk about what the city was like back then, how she managed to make friends and how she feels about green sauce. She also shares what is probably the most romantic engagement story EVER. And of course there are lots of tips for discovering the UK in Frankfurt:
