The English word chivalry comes from the Old French word chevalerie. Its origin came from medieval times and was the code of conduct required for knights. When we think of chivalry, we think of a man’s courtesy toward a woman.

When it comes to Biblical chivalry, the Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 5:21 to “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” While God created men and women equal, He also placed deep within the heart of man a unique desire. A godly willingness to guard and protect women.

Now, that statement will infuriate the women’s liberation movement, but regardless, the reality is that God created men and women equally, but differently. In other words, men and women have different functions that complement one another. We are not to compete with one another. Part of a man’s duty is demonstrated through chivalry. By holding doors, helping with coats, how about rising when a woman enters—a man makes God smile when he honors female beauty.

Jesus is speaking about money there, but His point is that anything that replaces Him will be a miserable existence. Isn’t that the truth? As someone who served at the altar of sexuality for over 20 years of my life, I learned first hand how slavery works. We have been having a tough conversation over the past few days with Susan Stacey, the founder, and director of The Fountain of Hope Ministries located in Phoenix, AZ. Susan ministers to the victims of prostitution and those caught in the sex trafficking industry.

As we wrap this series up, we obviously know that pornography doesn’t lead all men into prostitution. But if we stop there, we miss the heart of the real problem, and that is women are not sex objects. Women are made in the image of God and are the pinnacle of His creation.

As Christian men, we need to hear this loud and clear. We are to protect them, not abuse them. If you need examples of how a perfect man treated women, read the Gospel of John 4 and 8.

Laura Lederer, the former Senior Advisor on Trafficking in Persons for the U.S. State Department, says, “Pornography is a brilliant social marketing campaign for commercial sexual exploitation. A key ingredient to the success of commercial sex is the belief that people (especially women) are sexual commodities, and Internet pornography is the ideal vehicle to teach and train this belief.”

Yesterday we discussed how porn was linked to sex trafficking and in today’s podcast, we continue our conversation with Susan Stacey, the founder, and director of the Fountain of Hope Ministries. The Fountain is a refuge for women who are caught in the sex trafficking industry.

What exactly do you think of when you hear that passage of Scripture? What does it look like for you to bring good news to the poor and to bind up (to encourage) the brokenhearted? What do Isaiah’s prophetic words mean about proclaiming liberty, freedom, and release? And just who exactly are those captives - those prisoners - anyway?
