Originally a river Goddess over time, her importance expanded to become linked to the creator God Brahma as his creative power and consort. In this role, she represents the creative force of sound, and with intellectual order.
It is said that Brahma created the universe with the help of Saraswati. Brahma being the guardian of the cosmos, Saraswati helping to sustain the cosmos. With her help Brahma instituted sacred laws and dharma to ensure stability and growth in the world. Known as a Dawn-Goddess whose rays dispel the darkness of ignorance, chaos and confusion. To realize her one must go beyond the pleasures of the senses and rejoice in the serenity of the spirit.
Usually, she is portrayed as a beautiful, serene woman with a radiant light skinned complexion. Usually dressed in white. She is often depicted with four arms, each holding a symbolic object: a book, a rosary, a water pot, and a musical instrument.
