Jay Revell got my attention earlier this year with the essay he wrote for Golf.com about his grandfather, otherwise known as "Gramps". It's a fantastic piece of writing that really resonated with me.
It's my first interview with a professional golfer!
**Dave and I just wanted to let everyone listening know that we had our conversation a few weeks before things went sideways across the globe and specifically in our country. Which, looking back now, it is kind of nice listening to because we could just have a normal discussion about the game we love.**
This week I have my first golf industry insider! Mike Doyle is the Co-Founder and Director of Golf for Five Iron Golf.
Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone! And how fitting to have none other than Tom Coyne, best-selling author of A Course Called Ireland, on the show.
Dave Hill, otherwise known as One Bearded Golfer, is another one of my #GolfChat friends, a fellow podcaster, and owner and operator of OneBeardedGolfer.com.
Dave has a fantastic sense of humor, tells a great story, and has just a tremendous voice. What I would give for that baritone.
We talk about his moniker's origin story, his writing style, his own new podcast, his trip to the golf holy land that is Scotland, and, of course, when and why he fell in love with the game of golf.
You can follow Dave on Twitter @1BeardedGolfer and find his podcast, Blind Shots Podcast, everywhere podcasts are available.
Mitch Laurance is currently a contributor to GolfTripX.com and co-host of the Talking Golf Getaways podcast. But before that, he was an actor on a pair of shows that were quite influential and memorable in my life.
He also happens to be one of my favorite follows on Twitter at @MitchLaurance and just an all-around great human being.
We talk about his days in Los Angeles, where he also fell in love with the game of golf, as well as when he began playing his beloved hickories.
As always, if you enjoy the show, subscribe, rate, and leave a review if you're listening on Apple Podcasts, or just tell a fellow golf pal about it.
And if you have a story you want to share, let me know on Twitter @KrisMcEwen or at KrisMcEwen.com/Golf OriginStories.
Thanks for listening.
Marco is evidence that if you reach out to me on Twitter and want to tell you story, I will happily bring you on.
Although, to be fair, Marco isn't a total stranger. We have been friends on Twitter for quite some time and I knew enough about him that I was excited when he offered to come on the podcast.
A fellow Chicagoan and Blackhawks fan, Marco and I talk about the neighborhood in which he grew up and what inspired him to become a police officer. It also turns out Marco and I essentially learned how to play golf and fell in love with the game on literally the exact same golf course, separated by just a few decades.
You can follow Marco on Twitter @CSIHockeyGuy. As always, feel free to follow me on Twitter @krismcewen and let me know if you have a Golf Origin Story you want to share.
And, as my little brother, Scotty, reminded me (to remind you), if you like the show, do me a favor and subscribe, rate, and leave a quick review about the show.
Thanks again for listening!
Ben Grehan, otherwise known as @Back9Ben on Twitter, is the host of the weekly Twitter golf get-together known as #GolfChat.
Among other things, we discuss what got him into reviewing golf courses for Golf Advisor, the end of an era for his beloved New England Patriots, and a little bit about Tobacco Road.
He also mentions, almost in passing, one, if not the, most interesting and unique places where he used to hit golf balls to pass the time. Just an incredible story.
As always, thanks again for listening and if you have a story you'd like to share, let me know on Twitter @krismcewen or at krismcewen.com/golforiginstories.
Shaun Smith, otherwise known as @GorseNod on Twitter, is a thoughtful, unassuming, and soft-spoken human being.
He's also a musician, an artist, a photographer, and a writer. His essay on Nickerson Dunes was one of my favorite things I read in 2019.
And, while he came to the game of golf "late" in life, he fell in love with it quickly. To the point, he sought out employment just to be closer to the game.
