The extended deadline - for spaza shops and food-handling informal outlets to become registered through their local municipalities - is approaching once again. The deadline was extended to 28 February 2025 by President Cyril Ramaphosa in December 2024, and came about after blame was pointed at spaza shops following a number of children had fallen ill and died after consuming suspected contaminated food, and with added concerns over the sale of goods which had passed their best-before and sell-by dates. The remains of the 14 South African National Defence Force soldiers who lost their lives in the easter Democratic Republic of the Condo (DRC) will be repatriated on Thursday, 13 February, and handed over to their respective families. The soldiers died when they were caught in the crossfire during conflict between DRC army forces and M23 rebels a fortnight ago.
