Rachael Shelton filled in at the controls and for co-host for Bill today. She and Rosemary were joined by Alex talking movies, Charlie talking plants, Dr. Pete talking pets, and even managed to work in topics like traffic on Soquel, downtown development, the new manager of the county fair and more. The more included talk of a certain wedding in Venice, with lots of discussion of the fashions seen there, so perhaps it was a very good day to have Rachael take my place.

In the good news we heard of an American astronaut who is the female astronaut who has spent more time doing spacewalks than any other.

Assembly member Dawn Addis said the recent plans to offer public land for sale in her district have been changed. We also heard of her work on heat-related illness.

Gary Shapiro was with us, telling us all about Woody Allen and his movies.

Emily Bonder is an apiarist in Santa Cruz. She does know bees, and now we do, too.

Dr. Pete made the trip to Santa Cruz to visit, but only just a few minutes before the end of the show. He brought us cherries.

In the good news segment we learned that chickens and ducks are full of drama.

Jaime Smith said that because of all the spring and summer fruits and vegetables, "It's a fun time to be an eater on the central coast." He also told us chickens make good backyard pets.

Gary Shapiro is adamant that Yoko Oko had nothing to do with the Beatles splitting. Also, her singing voice, as on Kiss Kiss Kiss was a direct inspiration of the B-52's, as can be heard in Rock Lobster.

Jeff Manker told us about his upcoming trip to England and Scotland, where he expects to encounter Puffins and other species local to the area.

Mari Segura filled in for Rosemary, who was otherwise engaged.

In the good news we heard of Ellie Wilson and her Moth X Human project, in which she takes data gathered on the presence of moths of different species, and uses it to generate music. Her intent is to call attention to declining moth populations.

Later we heard about a dog who recognized that a fellow was having a siezure. Bill was sure how the story would end, but he was wrong.

Gail Pellerin was at the No Kings protest and told us about that. We asked if she was concerned for herself, given the attack on legislators over the weekend. Of course she is, but at the same time she reassured us that California's assembly members and senators have lots of security available to them. She is proud of the work the assembly and senate did to finish the budget and send it to the govornor recently.

In the Ag report, Michael Olson told us President Trump has directed ICE to stay out of the agricultural fields, as well as hotels and restaurants, focusing their efforts in cities. That is good news for farm workers. Govornor Newsome is eliminating the loophole allowing low grade hemp to be used to manufacture high THC edibles. Two Chinese students were caught sneaking a very dangerous fungus into a U.S. university. It attacks food plants, livestock and people. Pretty scary.

Dr. Pete told us of a horse race that began in New York and ended in California. He also had a lost tortoise tale.

In good news we heard a dad story, since Father's day is approaching.

Most of the week's movies were uninspiring. The picks of the week were A Photographic Memory and the live action remake of How To Train Your Dragon.

Charlie taught us all about dhalias, including growing them in pots.

In Good News we heard about a lost tortoise that was finally found, a painting lost and then found and sold for a tidy sum, and Brian Wilson, whom we lost just yesterday. 

Gary Shapiro joined us to share lots of stories about Brian Wilson and how he made music with and for the Beach Boys.

Good News brought us the story of a crane operator who saved a man from a burning building, and later was himself rewarded. So was a 14-year-old boy who found a wallet laden with cash and did the right thing.

Jaime Smith educated us about the differences between squid and octopus, from a chef's point of view. Rosemary told of having once educated another about English bacon.

In good news we heard of the life of Dale Bridenbaugh, who is responsible for having made GE Nuclear reactors safer. Also, Rosemary related the story of running her car battery down at the park yesterday. A park employee got her car started and a friend got her a membership to AAA for the next time. That's a bad day turning around for sure.

John Laird gave us a good look at the inner workings of creating a budget, which he and our other legislators are doing right now.
