The letter to the church in Thyatira begins with a majestic vision of Christ as the One who sees all things. Nothing is hidden from His sight. He sees what the church in Thyatira is doing well. His commendation of this church may be the highest of all seven. They had four outstanding qualities and they were growing spiritually. But He also saw through their walls and into their hearts. He saw divided loyalty. A woman called Jezebel had led them to pay devotion to idols. They were trying to worship the the One True God and false gods at the same time. This letter makes clear: Jesus demands and deserves our undivided, single-hearted, pure devotion. We must grasp onto Scripture tightly in order to discern the many voices in our time, who like Jezebel, beckon us to compromise. In the end, any sacrifice we must make for our devotion to Christ will be infinitely worth it. This message is driven by three central questions: 1) Are we growing spiritually? 2) Is our devotion to God single-hearted? 3) Are we holding fast to Scripture?

In this third letter, Christ writes to the church in Pergamum and describes the city as the dwelling place of Satan. It must have been extremely tough to live and minister there. Unfortunately, the believers did not rise to the occasion and shine brightly for Christ. Instead, the flame had become a flicker due to tolerance and compromise.

Even though they remained loyal to Christ, never denying Him, even when Antipas’ was martyred; they compromised their standards with the godless culture of the day. Satan had not only sought to crush the church through persecution, but also to deceive it through false teachers giving approval of sexual immorality.

Christ confronts their sin of compromise and warns us to not do the same.
