We are back with another bonus episode of the GOSH Podcast!

At the beginning of February 2022, Dr. Gillian Hanley and her team published their preliminary research findings that suggest removing a woman’s fallopian tubes at the time of other routine gynecologic surgeries is a safe, effective way to reduce ovarian cancer risk for women. Through the support of OVCARE, Vancouver Coastal Health, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, BC Cancer, BC Cancer Foundation, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, and the UBC Faculty of Medicine, these findings are a huge step towards learning more about ovarian cancer prevention.

On this episode of the GOSH Podcast, we are joined by gynecologic oncologist Dr. Lesa Dawson. She discusses the recent establishment of a hereditary cancer and gynecologic cancer survivorship clinic in BC. Dr. Dawson shares how a focus on early menopause management through hormone prescriptions, sexual health, and hereditary cancer has allowed them to improve the health and quality of life of many patients in BC.

Stephanie met with Rose Lee, a Chinese patient who was diagnosed with both breast cancer and ovarian cancer. After her ovarian cancer diagnosis, she received hereditary cancer testing where she discovered she had a BRCA1 mutation. 

Rose talks about her journey to this discovery and the impact it had on her friends/family. She also talks candidly about the importance of language accessibility and how important the Chinese Support Group at BC Cancer was in her journey.

On this episode of the GOSH Podcast, we are joined by Jessica Sutherland, a member of the Patient Research Advisory Board for the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Lab at UBC. She was diagnosed with endometriosis 8 years ago since joining the Advisory Board in 2017, has collaborated on 7 research projects including the development of the newly launched Sex, Pain, and Endometriosis website. During this episode, Jessica and Stephanie talk about the normalization surrounding painful periods and why treating conversations about gynecological health as taboo can be harmful to those who have periods.
