In September 1981, David Morgan, and evangelist who has served the Lord in the country of Wales for many years, rose to his feet at the Larne conference and gave a report of gospel work in Pembrokeshire (West Wales). Going from village to village and from town to town, preaching and putting up tents, the work can sometimes be hard and lonely. At the end of his report he told a touching and memorable lifeboat story that no one present could easily forget. The story is a challenge to our interest and willingness to sacrifice and labour in the work of the gospel, and to leave the results with God.

Matthew McKillen (1936-2018) was saved on 30th Aug 1947 as a boy of 10. In this heart-warming testimony he tells how both his mother and father were saved and reveals the fascinating background to his own privileged upbringing in a godly home. Matthew and his wife Margaret were associated for many years with the Gospel Hall in Cambridge Avenue, Ballymena (formerly Wellington Street). Though a busy businessman, Matthew devoted his life to the local assembly, to the visitation of the sick and to the preaching of the gospel. He was a fast talking preacher…so you’ll have to listen carefully to catch it all! Reading: Rom 10:8-10, 17 (Testimony given in Windsor Gospel Hall, Belfast, 2007)

Hear the voice of a preacher who was born in 1873! Thomas Campbell (1873-1964) first heard the gospel in Dublin while training to be a Policeman. Soon after, he was saved – on 14th April 1899 – through Isaiah 53:5. Later, when he saw the truth of gathering to the Lord’s name, he came into fellowship with the assembly meeting in the Gospel Hall in Letterkenny. He served the Lord for many years as an evangelist and saw many hundreds saved, and assemblies formed in Lungs, Sion Mills and other towns. Among others, Harold Paisley was greatly influenced by Mr Campbell. Speaking in Larne in 1983, Mr Paisley told of the time he stood with Mr Campbell (then age 91) in a graveyard in Macosquin. Looking at the graves of Mr Campbell’s parents, and his 5 brothers and their 5 wives, the aged evangelist said, “Harold, I pointed them all to Christ before I ever stood on a gospel platform.” In this recording, Mr Campbell brings comfort and hope for the Christian from the anticipation of heaven.

PART 2 of 6 – In the second of a series of 6 messages on “Questions about the assembly”, Tom Bentley (1924-2011) answers the question, “Is the local assembly a sect”? In the first half an hour, Mr Bentley meticulously works his way through the various biblical names and titles of a local assembly, drawing careful distinctions and guidelines. Then he looks at the uniqueness of the local assembly and shows that its very existence is a total repudiation of denominationalism. Readings: Matt 18:15-20, Acts 13:1-3, Rom 16:1-4, 16, 1 Thess 2:14-15, Rev 1:10-11 (Message preached in Whitehouse Gospel Hall, Northern Ireland, in Aug 1989)

Jim Martin (1925-2017) was saved in Banbridge on 1st April 1941 in the 5th week of gospel meetings being held by evangelist David Craig. In this recording, given in Ballymena in 2002, shortly after the homecall of his dear wife Elizabeth, Mr Martin tells both his testimony and how the Lord called him to preach the gospel. In 1951 he went out full time and in this message he recalls many interesting and encouraging stories from 51 years of service. He was a gifted earnest preacher of the gospel who the Lord used in the salvation of hundreds of souls. At the beginning of this message, Mr Martin read Acts 26:22-23 and 1 Chron 29:5.

PART 1 of 6 – In the first of a series of 6 messages on “Questions about the assembly”, Tom Bentley (1924-2011) answers the question, “What is the church”? He starts by introducing “the church which is His body”, and makes the all-important point that this church did not exist prior to the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2). Looking at the “church which is His body” dispensationally, symbolically, mystically and eternally, Mr Bentley distinguishes it from the local assembly, which gathers to the name of the Lord in a particular place. Readings: Matt 16:13-20, Eph 1:19-23, 2:19-22, 1 Cor 3:9-10, 16 (Message preached in Whitehouse Gospel Hall, Northern Ireland, in Aug 1989)

David Gilliland preaches on God’s word to Israel in Ezekiel Ch 22, a chapter in which God speaks about the state of the land, the sins of the land, and finally the search in the land: God’s search for a man to “stand in the gap”. Along life’s journey there is a need for boundaries and hedges with no gaps. Personal hedges, family hedges, marriage hedges, business hedges, and assembly hedges. Mr Gilliland speaks on the hedge of separation, of supplication, of sanctity, of Bible study, and of supervision. A plain-speaking and challenging message. Reading: Eze 22:2, 18, 23-31 (Message preached in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, 2003)
