David Gilliland preaches a message he entitled “WYSIWYG Christianity”. WYSIWYG stands for “What You See Is What You Get”. We project an image, we create an impression, but does that correspond to what we really are? The Pharisees were “expert performers” but the Lord exposed them as hypocrites. David Gilliland looks at a number of people in the Bible who pretended to be someone they were not. The challenge is to be real, genuine and transparent, in a world of sham, superficiality and fake sincerity. A challenging message. Reading: Luke 11:37-12:12 (Message preached in Lurgan, Northern Ireland)

Bert Joyce (1927-2017) was raised in a Christian family under the sound of the gospel. He knew the Scriptures from his earliest days and sat under the preaching of mighty men of God like his uncle Albert Joyce, and Herb Harris. However, Bert, like many children brought up in such privileged circumstances, wanted to get away from the gospel and enjoy the world. But God visited Bert with a sickness that nearly took his life. He sobered up and sought salvation. He was saved on 16th April 1939 as a 12 year old boy, sitting at the back of a Hall observing the breaking of bread meeting. In this recording, made during a series of gospel meetings he shared with Mr Bill Bingham, Mr Joyce tells the whole story with earnestness and conviction. In his 20’s Mr Bert Joyce was commended to preach the gospel full time and the Lord used him mightily over many decades.

This recording, made in 1956 at a Bible Conference gospel meeting in Vancouver, Canada, features the voice of the late esteemed evangelist Albert Joyce (1897-1982). Mr Joyce was saved in May 1905, in Portobello, near Edinburgh, Scotland. Troubled about his soul, he looked at numerous gospel verses but wondered how he could get saved. “I knew all these verses, and I always believed they were true. How could I believe any differently?” Turning to Isaiah 53:5 and 6 he said, “Losing sight of my believing and my fears, I saw that Jesus was wounded for me. God’s Word was enough. God was satisfied, and I rested there.” He lived 70 more years to prove the reality of his conversion. Albert Joyce was commended to full time service on March 22, 1921 by the assembly meeting in the East End Gospel Hall in Toronto. He laboured in the gospel for many decades and saw hundreds of souls saved and a lasting work done for eternity. Mr Joyce had a deep exercise for the building up of God’s people in the truth of God, so he, along with Mr. Fred Watson, Mr. Gordon Johnston and Mr. Hector Alves, founded the Truth and Tidings magazine, with Mr Joyce becoming its founding editor. In this recording, the eloquent Mr Joyce preaches powerfully on the two expressions from Matthew’s gospel: “Come unto Me” (11:28) and “Depart from Me” (25:41).

Ben Sutton (1922-2007) grew up in a drunkard’s home. Hardship turned to tragedy when his mother died while he was still a boy. When Ben left school he became a coal miner and then, during WW2, served in the Merchant Navy. He saw the horrors of war close-up, as German U-boats targetted the British and US ship convoys. With the War over, Ben returned home to South Shields in the north east of England, where his favourite places were the public house and the betting shop. His life was a total mess. But God was about to answer the prayers of an old lamp-lighter who had shared the gospel with Ben as a boy. As Ben looked up at the clock on the wall of the pub one day he read these words: “Guinness Time”. Suddenly one word exploded in his mind: “Eternity!”. Listen to how God saved Ben Sutton and made him a preacher of the very gospel he once ridiculed.

Dan Rudge preaches on the 7 sayings of the Lord Jesus on the cross. He raises some questions: “Father forgive them”; but who are the “them”? “Today in Paradise”; but where is Paradise? “My God, My God”; but why not “My Father, My Father”? Dan addresses these questions (and much else beside) in a wide-ranging helpful message. His headings for the Lord’s 7 sayings are:

Andrew Ussher preaches “making the best use of your time and life” from Eph 5:1 and 1 Cor 14:12. As we face choices and options in life, the standard should not be “I could be doing worse things with my time” but “What is the best use of my time”. Are we striving for excellence in the Christian life, or just frittering away our days with trivia and inconsequential pursuits? A challenging message (Message preached at the Vancouver Thanksgiving Conference 2011)

Fred Whitmore (1903-1980) was saved as a lad in Birmingham. He became busy in open air work in his teens, and, at the young age of 21, launched forth into full-time service in England. He was mightily used in gospel preaching in his 20’s and was instrumental in seeing a number of assemblies established, including Ossett in 1926 and Skelmanthorpe in 1927. With a godly committed wife (Dorothy), Fred laboured tirelessly for many decades. In 1948, he was one of the founders of the Lancashire Gospel Tent (photo below), personally holding 24 series of gospel meetings in it of 6 weeks each over two decades. Again, assemblies were established in that area, both in Farnworth and Chorley. This old recording (undated) features Fred telling a solemn and weighty story at the close of a gospel meeting. He tells of the tragic loss of The Royal Charter off Moelfre Bay in Anglesey, North Wales, and warns his audience of the danger of being “lost in sight of home”. It give a taste of Fred’s preaching and provides a classic example of how to use an illustration, giving pertinent details and making the application stick.

PART 5 of 6 – In the fifth part of a 6-part series on the fundamentals of the gospel, Mr Jim Allen speaks on the subject of sanctification. The root idea of the word sanctification, Mr Allen explains, is to be “set apart”. Its basis – the blood of Christ; its agent – the Holy Spirit; its result – seen in three areas of my person…my mind with which I know God, my emotions with which I love God and my will with which I serve God. Readings: Heb 13:10-14, 1 Cor 1:1-2, 6:9-11, 2 Thess 2:13-14, 1 Thess 4:3-12 (Message preached in Scotland in 1990)

When Frank Knox came to the end of his preaching days in the big Gospel Tent in Belfast, Mr Harold Paisley took on the responsibility of the work. In the early 1960’s, Harold gave a report at the Belfast Easter Conference about those first of his High Street Tent meetings which had upwards of 2,300 attendees on one night. (The singing was raised by David Kane). During the weeks many were saved. When the Tent was burned to the ground. the Ulster Hall was procured for the end of the meetings. In this report Mr Paisley also refers to other series of meetings he had after the High Street Tent. In one such series, Mr Frank Knox’s daughter was saved, having been prayed for for 50 years. (Closing hymn: “Where Jesus is, ‘Tis heaven there”)
