As Saint Lucia continues to commemorate August as Emancipation Month, a call to action for increased tolerance, unity, and inclusion across all societal sectors and groups has been issued.
Minister for Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment, Hon. Joachim Henry, has passionately called for a modern Saint Lucia embodying the spirit of emancipation. As the island marks Emancipation Month, Minister Henry said that society must reflect on its journey towards freedom and continue building a community where no sector or group feels marginalized.
In a significant move to fortify the healthcare sector, the Government of Saint Lucia has allocated a substantial $11 million to the Millennium Heights Medical Complex (MHMC) and Owen King EU Hospital (OKEU). This financial injection, which was officially presented on August 23rd, 2024, aims to address pressing financial challenges and clear outstanding debts within these pivotal healthcare institutions. The funds, sourced from the Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP) and the government treasury, are poised to ensure that the MHMC continues its mission of providing exceptional healthcare services to the people of Saint Lucia.
The Millennium Heights Medical Complex, which encompasses the Owen King EU Hospital, the National Mental Wellness Centre, and the Turning Point Rehabilitation Centre, has long been a cornerstone of healthcare delivery in Saint Lucia. However, recent years have seen the complex grappling with financial difficulties that have threatened its ability to maintain optimal service levels. The government's timely intervention is expected to alleviate these challenges and restore the complex’s capacity to deliver quality healthcare.

A cohort of 105 young participants, including a residents from the Boys Training Centre (BTC), graduated from the fourth annual Botham Jean - Youth Exploring Skills (BJ-YES) program. The graduation ceremony at the National Skills Development Centre on August 16, 2024, celebrated the achievements of the dedicated young people who participated in the four-week skills training program.
The BTC residents participated in Electrical Installation, Desktop Publishing, Bread, Cake, and pastry-making classes, gaining hands-on experience and valuable knowledge for their personal development and future success. This initiative aligns with the vision of the Boys Training Centre as the island's sole youth rehabilitative institution, committed to offering care, intervention, and life-skills education within a safe and supportive environment to empower its residents to become productive and positive contributors to society.
