The Saint Lucia Fire Service is collaborating with the corporate sector, as well as the Ministry of Equity, the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) and disaster management committees in order to shortlist recipients for this fire prevention initiative. The goal is to distribute 1000 smoke alarms by December 21.
Acting Assistant Divisional Officer Mabius Francis commented that the Fire Service has noticed a worrisome link between house fires and low-income households.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs will work collaboratively with sister agencies, namely the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Ministry of Economic Development to oversee the new St. Jude Hospital reconstruction project.

UN agencies in Saint Lucia joined forces last week, to educate students at the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary school on the work of the UN in Saint Lucia, and to inspire interest in careers within the UN.
The activity was organized in commemoration of UN Day, observed on Oct. 24 worldwide.

On Thursday, Oct. 27, the Ministry of Health’s Community Health Services Unit took to the streets in the fight against mental health stigma. October 10 is recognized annually as World Mental Health Day, however, the entire month is used to raise awareness of the ongoing issues.
This year’s global campaign focused on ending stigma and discrimination against mental illness, by choosing one’s words carefully. Region 8’s Community Mental Health Nurse, Maria Charles Monrose said education is the solution to the problem.
“If we want to stop stigma we have to start it with education. So we visited Castries, Bexon, Dennery, Micoud and Mon Repos to share information about mental health and mental illness.”

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly affairs hosted the opening ceremony to a three-day Knowledge Exchange Conference at the Finance Administrative Center on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The Knowledge Exchange Conference is intended to improve health systems resilience and accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage in the Caribbean.
The historic event is a first collaboration between the Korea World Bank Partnership Facility and the World Bank.
