Grace Abounds

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus quotes the 5th Commandment, “You shall not murder,” and then continues, ‘If you are angry…you are liable to judgment’ (Matt 5:21-26) Is Jesus commanding us not to be angry? giving us a law we can’t possibly keep? expressing an impractical ideal? Or is Jesus teaching us something unexpected about life in relationship with God and each other?

“You are the salt of the earth.” “You are the light of the word.” (Matt 5:13-16). Salt heals, preserves, flavors. Light fosters life, illuminates, helps us see. What does it mean when Jesus calls his community of disciples, the church, us, salt and light?

It is easy to forget that what Jesus preached in the sermon on mount were radical and life changing words for the disciples and for us. Jesus called those seen as least fortunate in society as blessed. We are challenged to do the same and recognize every child of God as beloved.

The gifts given to Jesus by the magi in the epic story of today’s gospel were full of contradictions. They included gold fit for a king as well as spices used for burial. In truth, all of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection contradicted most people’s expectations. The most radical of these contradictions was that the light of the world would come to be amongst us, in our own journey of life and death.

“We Need Peace” - words painted on a wall in Jerusalem near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a sacred space marking the place where Jesus suffered and died and rose again to life. Jesus did this to bring us peace. Peace knowing the Lord is with us through it all. Peace that transcends our circumstances. Peace that guards our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:4-8). We need the peace Jesus brings, now and always.

As we celebrate in this Season, and every season of the year, God expresses his love for us by coming to us in Christ Jesus, our Savior and Lord. How might we - as the Apostle Paul encourages his friends to do (Philippians 1:3-11) - overflow with love for each other, in this Season, and every season of the year?

We are surrounded by reminders of the Christmas season lining the shelves of every store. However, advent is a different kind of preparation. It is a time of waiting, wondering, and hoping. The people of God have waited and hoped for a long time that the promise of God will be fulfilled in the coming of the Christ child. This advent we join in their waiting.

What kind of king is Christ Jesus the King? That’s the question at the heart of the encounter between Jesus and Pontius Pilate recounted in John 18. It’s a question followers of Jesus have wrestled with from that time to this. It’s a question that continues to resonate for us today. How would you answer it?

In both the reading from Daniel and Mark we are given signs of a time coming where there will be suffering and also deliverance. These apocryphal texts use grand imagery to reveal a simple truth. That truth is that God’s people are afraid and God remains with them always.
