The justice of God is good and perfect. It is the justice of God that disciplines, corrects, and also blesses. Because God alone sits upon the judgment seat, the believer must be careful not to assume the role of judge, jury, and executioner over another person’s soul.

This lesson focuses on the praise due to God the Father, who, according to His great mercy, has caused believers to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. As we consider 1 Peter 1:3, we will see how the Father is glorified in the Son, how mercy overcomes sin, and how the church bears witness to the living hope that is found in Christ alone.

This study calls us to examine the danger of condemning others while failing to recognize the same sin within ourselves. Romans 2 reminds us that God alone judges according to perfect righteousness, and His kindness, tolerance, and patience are meant to lead us to repentance.

What kind of friend would allow another friend to continue in something that could hurt him—or even destroy him—without warning him? What kind of selfish behavior is it to remain silent about danger simply because we care more about being liked, accepted, or not seen as judgmental? Satan seeks to isolate the believer from loving correction so that sin remains hidden and destruction continues unchecked. The question is this: what is the believer’s responsibility when a brother or sister is walking toward danger?

This lesson calls every reader to consider the seriousness of standing before God, not by personal opinion, culture, or comparison with others, but by the righteous standard of His law. Paul’s argument in Romans reminds us that all people—Jew and Gentile alike—are accountable before God and are without excuse apart from His mercy.
