When the people of Jabesh were threatened by an opposing force, their first response was to try and make a treaty with them. As believers in a hostile world we also can be tempted to make a treaty with the enemy, rather than to stand in faith.

When Israel proclaimed Saul as King, they automatically reject God as King. Jesus makes it clear in Matthew 6:24 that, “no one can serve two masters.”

When the people of Israel cried out for a king, what they were really asking for was a replacement for God. Instead of relying solely on Him through faith, to protect them, they would rather trust in an earthly King.

Scripture Passage: 1 Samuel 7:1-17

Israel began to grieve over their sin. Grief can be a good thing, if it leads us to genuine repentance. However, Samuel knew that people can be moved without being changed. So, he calls them to publicly repent and recommit themselves to Yahweh. If your heart is truly broken over your sin, you will not remain in it.

Text: 1 Samuel 5-7:1

The Israelites are mourning because the Ark of the Covenant has been captured and placed in the Temple of Dagon. They were sad because they failed to “protect” God. However, these chapters remind us that we don’t need to worry about protecting God, we just need to worry about obeying him.
