Scripture Passage: 1 Samuel 4:1-22

Israel finds itself on the losing side of a battle with the Philistines. Understanding this to be the judgment of God, they call for the Ark of the Covenant to be brought into the camp, thinking this action will turn the tide. Instead, they are defeated, and the Ark is captured. As one commentator puts it, “Having the paraphernalia of God and having God are not the same”.
