Everybody wants a loophole... children when it comes to chores, corporations when it comes to taxes, and religious people when it comes to rules. But Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, brilliantly and decisively plugs the holes and invites His followers to something brand new. In these two sections of Jesus’ teaching, he confronts the hypocrisy of people in His day and gives us a vision for living lives of integrity and fidelity. These words, particularly on divorce are difficult to hear, but they are rooted in His wisdom and compassion for imperfect people.... people like us.
