Each of us has “promised lands” of our own making. We may not say it that way, but we all have treasures we’re trying to attain. For some, it’s wealth, possessions, status, or influence. For others, it’s desired for family life or leisure. None of these pursuits are wrong in and of themselves. Money, resources, influence, and relationships can all be a blessing to the world, and God created us uniquely with the ambition to pursue them. But when they become objects of our worship or identity, we miss out on the abundant life offered in Christ.

There is little more excruciating than experiencing betrayal at the hands of a family member, friend, or other loved one. Years and years of trust can be devastated in a moment. A text thread that morphs. A coincidental reunion becomes a series of planned meet-ups. Meetings are held in secret. Words are spoken about you behind your back. The list of these painful experiences is endless. Joseph modeled nearly as good of a response as anyone. Yet it lacked the kind of purity that we see in Jesus’ response. How, then, do Jesus' followers absorb these betrayals and respond in such a way that doesn’t betray Jesus himself?

All throughout the Bible, God is pursuing relationships with people. One of the clearest insights we have into this dimension of God’s heart is the Tabernacle, given to Israel in the Old Testament. This was a unique place where Heaven and Earth met and God dwelt among His people. But more than just a way to connect with God, the Tabernacle functioned as a signpost to something greater, a better Tabernacle that would come one day and be here to stay.

In the Christian life, gratitude is really important. It pops up all throughout Scripture, and is so indispensable to being a Christian that the Apostle Paul says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thess. 5:18) But how do we grow in gratitude? What makes for a grateful heart? In a seemingly small episode on Jesus’ trip to Jerusalem in Luke 17, we meet ten people who help show us the answer.

Moses is a big deal. God used him to deliver Israel from slavery, he performed mighty miracles, and most people attribute him with writing the first 5 books of the Bible. Moses is referenced more in the New Testament than any other Old Testament figure. But how does the life of Moses point us to Christ? When we lean into his story, we find that we are all in need of a true and greater Moses, and that is exactly what we have in Jesus.
