Yamen Lawrence is a proud Arab Israeli gay activist. He was raised in Nazareth where he had to hide his identity while enduring years of emotional and physical bullying from fellow Arab classmates. When coming out to his Muslim family, many disowned him. Yamen now lives in Tel Aviv, openly gay and a member of a vibrant, thriving and supportive community where living his truth is both protected and celebrated.

Shir Weiss is a Fashion design teacher at Max Payne High School in Tel Aviv. In response to the jarring Silence by the United Nations Women, regarding the rapes and sexual abuses of women, at the hands of Hamas, during the October 7th terrorist attack on Israel, she inspired her student to create extraordinary drawings of women and hung them for public view Tel Aviv. Additionally, Shir and her colleagues helped their students design and create clothing for their end of year fashion show called, “The Garment Remembers,” commemorating 14 victims murdered at the Nova Music festival.

I sat down with Professor Eyal Zimlichman, a powerhouse at Sheba’s Medical Center where we discussed a variety of topics, all examples of Sheba’s extraordinary efforts and success in medical treatments, humanitarian missions and disruptive technologies. 

Sheba’s exceptionally high rates of patient survival from trauma to their state of the art rehabilitation center, with its continuity of care post patient discharge is but one example of their capabilities; all this in the wake of October 7th, with the added complexities of integrating the diverse populations of patient & staff for successful treatment and overall hospital function. We also discussed Sheba's herculean contributions to global crises such as pandemics, natural disasters and wars. Finally, Professor Zimlichman’s described ARC, a Global Innovation program leading transformative efforts in health care, while also being an economic engine of growth in driving local & global economies.

Sagi Dovev dedicates most of his waking hours to training and rehabilitating young IDF soldiers whose injuries range from post op rehab to single & multiple limb amputees to head traumas. Sagi’s dedication to many of these soldiers began prior to Oct 7th, training them in their combat units in mental and physical resilience. The connection he builds with his guys is steeped in a mutual respect of trusting the process of rebuilding the post injured soldier’s mind and body from the ground up. It is through these grueling training sessions that the definition of resiliency is exemplified.
