In this episode, I interview Joan Choi who discusses the topic of demystifying therapy from a BIPOC therapist’s perspective. Joan is a private practice therapist based in NYC who works with POC and immigrants, supporting clients through trauma, depression, anxiety, and identity development. We discuss Joan's journey into therapy, starting from her upbringing in Korea and the U.S., to bartending in New York, and eventually transitioning into a career in mental health counseling. Joan shares insights into her work with clients on trauma, depression, anxiety, and identity development, emphasizing the importance of anti-bias, anti-racism, and trauma-informed care. Key misconceptions about therapy, especially within BIPOC communities, are addressed, along with tips on how to navigate the process of starting therapy, the importance of therapist-client rapport, and understanding different therapy modalities. Joan also discusses the barriers to accessing therapy and provides advice for those considering therapy, underscoring the message that everyone deserves the chance to heal.

In this episode of the Grad School Femtoring Podcast, I share all the juicy details about what I wish I knew about publishing a book with an academic press without an academic job. This has been a highly requested topic and therefore, I offer detailed advice on the realities of book publishing, including financial considerations, the importance of marketing, and the gatekeeping nature of the publishing industry. I also discuss how publishing a book is more about sharing impactful knowledge than financial gain, revealing my own time, energy, and financial constraints and how risky this book publishing process was for me. I share lots of personal anecdotes, am not afraid to throw some shade at the gatekeepers, and end by expressing a heartfelt sense of gratitude to my community for supporting me in ordering Is Grad School For Me?

In this episode, our guest, Julio Salas' shares with us his inspiring journey of going from pre-med to a PhD in sociology, including key insights and advice for BIPOC students navigating academia.
Julio is a Chancellor's Fellow and first-year Sociology PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley.
Centering immigrant families, his research interests lie at the nexus of immigration, race & ethnicity, social stratification, and health.
He's a second-generation Colombian and Mexican immigrant born and raised in Corona, Queens, NY, who could have never imagined entering the spaces and accomplishing the feats he has.
Because of his profoundly non-traditional path and the unlikelihood of being where he is, Julio attempts to do all that he can to make his spaces and the world a better place for other marginalized folks.
On the show, Julio discusses the challenges of navigating academia as a first-gen, BIPOC individual, the decision-making process behind his pivot to a PhD, and the cultural and structural differences between medical and graduate school.

To celebrate the 250th episode milestone, I recorded an episode on the topic of choosing your hard in your career and life. I share what’s been coming up for me in the conversations I’ve been having behind closed doors with undergrads, graduate students, faculty, higher ed staff, and working professionals outside of academia. I highlight common struggles that we’re all facing and why it’s important that we get to choose our own path based on our values and mission despite knowing that there will be hurdles along the way.

In this episode, I discuss the differences between coaching, consulting, mentoring, and therapy. I address the significance of these distinctions for those seeking support in their personal and professional lives. I also talk about where my work fits (and doesn't) in within these roles. Today’s episode features my guest, Dr. Miroslava Chavez-Garcia who discusses the topic of writing and publishing academic articles. Dr. Miroslava is Professor of History and Faculty Director of the McNair Scholars Program at UCSB.
She’s published three books, including her most recent work, Migrant Longing: Letter Writing across the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, a slice in the life of her family history. She is currently working on a new project, “The ‘Architects of Hate’: Eugenics, Population Control, and Environmentalism in the Fight for Immigration Restriction in the Late Twentieth Century.”
She’s also a big fan of the medium we’ll be discussing today: articles. She’s published numerous academic articles in peer-reviewed journals, anthologies, handbooks, and textbooks as well as professional blogs and websites.
Dr. Miroslava also wants to let listeners know that she is a first-generation, Chicana/Mexicana immigrant with working class roots. And, most importantly, she is co-author with me (Yvette) of Is Grad School for Me?: Demystifying the Grad School Application Process for First-Gen BIPOC Students.
On the show, she shares common publishing mistakes, the importance of understanding the review process, and strategies for maintaining motivation and focus. This episode aims to demystify the academic article publishing world for anyone who is new to this process.
To learn more about Dr. Miroslava, you can go to the following links and check out her publications below:
