Carolyn Harding with Roxanne Groff and Chief Sil, in the thick of Ohio oil & gas rule making, updating the Ohio Class II injection well regulations, written by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and slated for a hearing of the State House JCARR committee (Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review) as early as Monday, December 6.

I got my start in activism ten years ago, raising the alarm of the radioactive waste stream of fracking, and conventional oil and gas waste. You both have been integral in this fight to protect Ohio citizens from indiscriminate, dangerous regulations and laws, most of which favor the oil & gas industry, allowing the massive radioactive waste stream to be dumped into our watersheds, landfills, injection wells, and spread on our roads and highways, as ice and dust control, aka brine.

I’m Carolyn Harding and today I would like to share my take, my personal opinion on an Ohioan with an infamous past, my great great uncle, Warren G. Harding.

It’s been just over 100 years since his election and inauguration and I’ve been doing some deep diving, reading books, talking with family, trying to prepare myself to deal with an upcoming event in Marion Ohio, where my extended family will gather together: my elderly parents, my sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins I haven’t seen for years, and some I have never met - most folks with very different politics than my own.

When I saw the line up of speakers for the dedication, I was aghast - I’ve protested most of them, many times!, with signs, fists, petitions, testimonies, rallies, marches, GrassRoot Ohio shows, and at the ballot box!

So what do I do? Do I show up as a family member or do I show up as an activist…..

I’ve decided to show up here as an activist, and show up there as family…. if I can.

For today’s show: Warren G. and Me. I’m going to share an opinion piece I’ve been working on from my lens, my perspective, of my great great uncle, Warren G. Harding. Then I’ll play the testimony I gave in 2018 opposing Ohio SB 250, the precursor of the current anti-protest bills in the Ohio legislature (HB 22, HB 109, and SB 41), bills if passed will felonize our right to peacefully protest, our First Amendment right!

Both the op ed and the Senate Judiciary Committee testimony are fueled by my relationship with Warren G. Harding.

According to Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, “On September 1st one of the most extreme abortion bans went into effect — Texas’s S.B. 8 will ban abortion at six weeks of pregnancy and encourages private citizens to act as abortion bounty hunters — allowing anyone to sue any Texan who they believe provided an abortion, or even helped a patient get an abortion, after six weeks.” Can you lay out what just happened in Texas, with the six-week abortion ban.

Mike Ferner is coordinator of Lake Erie Advocates, a grassroots citizens’ group that educates and organizes to build awareness and public pressure to stop the assault on Lake Erie by factory "farms" and other polluters. He lives with Sue Carter, his wife of 35 years, and an ever-changing number of cats, with Lake Erie as their front yard, in Toledo.

Markie Miller is a volunteer organizer for Toledoans for Safe Water, and the Ohio Community Rights Network. She is an ambassador for the Lake Erie Bill of Rights and the Rights of Nature, speaking at the United Nations, appearing on The Daily Show, and numerous local, national and international media outlets.

Mike I just read your AUGUST 27, article in Counterpunch, "There is No “Fixing” This Industry: the Third Battle for Lake Erie", with the visual of a huge billboard Saying “Lake Erie is Not a Toilet”-

Markie, you and Julian Mack were my First GrassRoot Ohio guests 2 1/2 years ago, just after Toledo citizens voted to enact The Lake Erie Bill of Rights.

The Objective is the same - a clean, safe, healthy lake.

Dominic Detwiler (he/him/his) is a graduate of Ohio University where he studied Sociology with Minors in Psychology, Political Science, and Music. As Public Policy Strategist, Dominic works primarily on advancing Equality Ohio's objectives at the Ohio Statehouse, including passing the Ohio Fairness Act and protecting minors from so-called "conversion therapy". Dominic has worked with Equality Ohio in various capacities since 2017 and has served as Public Policy Strategist since January 2020. Dominic is excited to be a part of the Equality Ohio team and work with lawmakers and other public officials to promote lived and legal equality for LGBTQ Ohioans.

Since 2017 she has focused on advocating for LGBTQIA+ youth across Ohio through professional development and education for youth-serving professionals including teachers, social workers, and more. On July 2, 2021, News5 cleveland.com headlined, Ohio's budget has a provision allowing medical providers to refuse care for LGBTQ community -Gov. DeWine said people could just find another provider.

And on July 7, Rolling Stone headlined, Ohio Allows Doctors to Deny LGBTQ Health Care on Moral Grounds - The new provision, snuck into a last-minute amendment to the budget, was signed by Gov. Mike DeWine.

This flies directly in the face of this portion of the Hippocratic oath, “I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.”

Carolyn Harding with Jonathan Beard and David Harewood, organizers with the Columbus Police Accountability Project, “To provide information for empowered citizens to learn more about how to exercise our collective power to ensure police accountability. Finally..”

Jon Beard's life goal is to help make the world a better place. He now works in the field of career technical education after working for 22 years in community-led redevelopment of distressed neighborhoods. He has helped lead multiple citizen ballot initiatives to reform Columbus City Council and regulate campaign contributions, coached and then ran a youth baseball league, and volunteered with many social welfare associations in his 30 years in Columbus.

David S. Harewood is an advocate and artist who’s spent the last decade in Columbus to give voice to the voiceless and help shorten the ”long arc of history” toward justice with every project and campaign. Having forged alliances and friendships with multiple organizations addressing, and victims of, police abuse, he joined with the Columbus Police Accountability Project as a way to provide protection for and a voice to those long afraid to speak out about the wrongs committed against them in the name of “law and order”.

“We are a collection of African American community leaders and involved citizens and our allies who are calling for the federal protection from a rogue division of police that has a pattern and practice of violating our community’s rights under the Constitution of the United States of America and the country’s various federally-ensured civil rights. We seek federal protection because for the past decades city political leadership has failed in that task. We will support our call for federal oversight by providing collecting and the testimony of Columbus residents who have experienced such lawless policing since the DOJ last investigated Columbus in 1998.”

Columbus is a dangerous city, the Columbus Division of Police’s violence and killing of our Black and People of Color citizens is next to that of New York City and Chicago.
