  • Save Kossuth Street Community Garden w/ Michael Doody & Emily Frechette
GrassRoot Ohio with Michael Doody and Emily Frechette, founder and organizers to save Kossuth Street Garden in Columbus Ohio. Why would the city of Columbus want to zone away the right for a well established-15 years old community garden to exist? What are these folks are doing to Save it?
Michael Doody is a Life long resident of Columbus. He’s lived in his house near the Kossuth Street Garden since 1996. He graduated in Journalism from OSU and has volunteered with Comfest, Hot Times Community Festival, for progressive candidates and is currently the block watch coordinator for Southern Orchards, bringing good dialogue between the Columbus Police Department and nearly 4,000 people in Southern Orchards. He is Founder/Director of Kossuth Street Garden and in 2007 he helped re-start Earth Day Columbus - and that first year's theme was “Start A Community Garden" which they did.
Emily Frechette is the Kossuth Street Garden manager, along with her husband. She grew up near Dayton Ohio and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a double major in Environmental Studies and Creative Writing. They moved to the Southern Orchards area in 2012, lived and worked on a 1-acre microfarm near Deshler Park for several years, moved to another area of town and volunteered at KSG, then moved back to Southern Orchards in 2016 when they bought their house, which is right across the street from KSG - the reason they moved here. In 2018 Emily was elected President of the Central Ohio Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America, a national conservation group.
Kossuth Street Garden is a one acre organic community garden located at E Kossuth Street and S. 17th Street - just south of Nationwide Children's Hospital and just east of German Village.

  • Black Liberation Movement-Kiara Yakita, Jessica Smiley, Brynette Turner
Carolyn Harding and today I’m talking with Kiara Yakita, Jessica Smiley and Brynette Turner, activists and founders of the Black Liberation Movement Central Ohio.
Kiara Yakita is the Founder of grassroots non-profit corporation Black Liberation Movement and CEO of The UnBossed Network, a local Black media network. She developed herself as an activist, starting with protests for the LGBTQ+ community and Black Lives Matter for Trayvon Martin. She fights for Black Liberation through frontline activism, protesting, community outreach, anti-racism education, speeches and community events. Kiara spreads a message of equality, unity, justice, and the eradication of racism and hate.
Jessica Smiley, grassroots organizer and activist for over 10 years, is a Black lesbian and mother to a 13 year old daughter. Her passion lies with both the BLM movement and LGBTQIA+ rights and protections. She was a distributed/national organizer of the Women’s March, helping women nationwide become community organizers for equality and to defeat Trump in 2020. She organized rallies at Goodale Park and the Ohio Statehouse, submitted written testimonies for and attended virtual city council meetings to voice her support for legislation to end no-knock warrants, to form citizens review boards, to demilitarize CPD and to address CPD presence in our schools. Jess was a field volunteer for Obama’s two presidential campaigns, and for Bernie, 2020.
Brynette Turner, Ohio native/Columbus resident is an author and retired federal employee who has also been a community advocate, political activist, and organizer of a variety of community events. Whether working on political campaigns, registering and educating voters, lobbying politicians, or actively protesting against social injustices and human rights violations, Brynette has been driven by a deep love for people, democracy, and the ideal of equal opportunity. She fully believes this country has the ability to live up to its promises to all people and its responsibility to be good stewards of this land and its many resources.
Columbus is an epicenter for Police Violence on people of color. Families and communities are heartbroken, devastated from the recent murders of Casey Goodson and Andre Hill. The Columbus Police chief has been demoted, Officer Coy has been indicted. A new Chief will be hired, and the newly won Citizen Review Board will be formed.
It’s been an intense six months since our first conversation. In your perspective what is foremost in the hearts and minds of Central Ohio BLM activists?

Carolyn Harding with Alex Cole and Megan Hunter, activist/advocates protecting the Ohio River and supporting communities fighting an ODNR (Ohio Department of Natural Resources) permit to allow the Colorado-based Powhatan Salt Co., (New York private equity funded), to drill into natural salt caverns along and under the Ohio River to store highly flammable and explosive natural gas liquids.
Alex Cole is a native of Fraziers Bottom WV on the Kanawha River. He has lived his whole life in the Chemical Valley and knows first hand what it is like to live on a river that is polluted beyond repair. Alex now works as a community organizer for The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition fighting the proposed Appalachian Storage Hub, trying to prevent what happened to the Kanawha from happening to the Ohio River, and protect the drinking water source for 5 million people from the petrochemical industry.

Megan Hunter is a staff attorney with Earthjustice. Her work focuses on challenging new oil, gas, and petrochemical buildout in the Appalachian Ohio River Valley. Before joining Earthjustice, Megan was staff attorney and outreach director at Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services and partner at her own firm, Hunter & Hunter LLC. In this capacity, she worked with communities in Ohio living with the ills of rapidly expanding oil and gas development, proposed petrochemical buildout, and legacy coal and steel mill pollution. She has represented individuals in defending their land and health from pipeline and well pad development, and she successfully litigated a Clean Water Act citizen suit that ended the practice of oil and gas produced water discharge to the Mahoning River. Megan graduated with honors from Vermont Law School, where she served as senior managing editor for the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law, and she holds a Master of Science in Applied Economics from Cornell University and Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Policy from Barnard College.

It’s a New Year, 2021, and you are active members of Ohio’s #1 industry - agriculture. Everyone is thinking about resolutions and goals, making better choices in diet and lifestyle - - - So here we are-
Mick you run a certified fruit and veggie organic farm, and Emily you run a regenerative flower farm - one farm’s been around for 40 years, one almost 5, one farmer has to go to the top of the hill for internet, the other taps into it daily.
You BOTH chose the road less traveled, for your farm -
    Why certified organic?
    Why regenerative agriculture?

  • #GlobalOdeToJoy w/ #ClevelandOrchestra musicians Alan Harrell, Isabel Trautwein & Mark Dumm
Carolyn Harding with musicians Alan Harrell, Isabel Trautwein and Mark Dumm of The Cleveland Orchestra.
250 years ago Ludwig Van Beethoven was born, December 16, 1770. And to honor his timeless musical genius and bring the world together, the #GlobalOdeToJoy was conceived. Groups from all over the world created and submitted musical videos celebrating Beethoven’s 9th symphony, Ode to Joy, and you, members of the Cleveland Orchestra are one of the few North American, and as far as I can tell, the only Ohio group to take part.
In this time of Covid-19, isolation, death, divisive, destructive politics, racism, police violence, hunger and fear, we need connection, humanity, generosity, love and yes, JOY.
