Last Friday, December 4, a 23 year old, young black man, Casey Goodson Jr. was shot and killed by the hands of a 17-year veteran of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, deputy Jason Meade, as Casey arrived home from the dentist, where his grandma, little brother and extended family were waiting.

This heart breaking atrocity is not an isolated incident here in Columbus, Ohio. No, recent years we have lost Henry Green (23), Tyree King (13), Kareem Ali Nadir Jones (30) and Julius Tate (16) to police gun violence. We are all asking Why?

“Lieutenant McFadden can not comment on Casey Goodson’s investigation as she is still an active police officer with the Columbus Division of Police.” But her story can help us understand what set the culture and climate within law enforcement in Central Ohio, and in her experience, the Columbus Division of Police.

Melissa McFadden is an activist and author who’s spent 24 years as a police officer in the Columbus, Ohio Division of Police.

McFadden was born and raised by her mom in the coal country of southern West Virginia, with a strong sense of justice. She always wanted to be an officer. She entered the US Air Force right out of high school to gain the training she thought would give her a shot at realizing her dream. Even as a trained military special police officer, the Black girl from the hillbilly state had to fight her way into the Columbus Police Academy in 1996.

She immediately saw discrimination and bigotry she had never experienced before. She didn’t know it wasn’t her job to fix it. But with her belief in God, her military training, and her love of learning she set out to right decades of wrongs perpetrated by Columbus police against the Black community, which as she quickly found out, included Black officers.

Since the Lame Duck session of 2016, she has advocated at the statehouse for gun safety and higher education issues through meetings with legislators and testifying in committee hearings. She has also presented testimony as a member of two organizations, the American Association of University Professors, for which she serves as Secretary of the Ohio Conference, and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, for which she is an active volunteer in the Ohio Chapter.

Carolyn Harding, host, with Linda Jakes and Rachelle Martin, advocates for Issue 24, the Franklin County ADAMH levy to fund mental health services, and drug and alcohol treatment. With the trauma and uncertainty of COVID-19, education and work upheavals and the ongoing protests for justice, most of us are in need of some help, emotionally. Lets talk about what this levy, if passed will do for central ohio folks.

Linda Jakes has been a staff member of Concord Counseling Services for 33 years and is now the Executive Director. The programs Linda manages at Concord incorporate support and community integration to increase community living days, highlighted in John Kasich’s’ book, Courage Is Contagious.

She received her Masters degree in Social Work at Ohio State University, has taught at Columbus State Community College, in the Department of Mental Health and Substance Addictions. She is sought out to speak about severe and persistent mental illness from a service delivery perspective. She has been recognized in her field and Honored by her life-long service in mental health.

Rachelle Martin has over 30 years of public service in the health care field, including coordination of health care systems nationally and internationally. Currently she’s the Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Franklin County (NAMI) . She was formally the Director of Training and Prevention Network Services Manager for the ADAMH Board of Franklin County and the co-founding partner of the Suicide Prevention Advisory Committee and the Suicide Prevention Foundation and where she chaired the Advisory Committee for over four years.

Rachelle was Project Coordinator for the HIV Outreach Demonstration Support Project, and team leader for the Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Project, sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Morgan Harper is the founder of the new grassroots organization, Columbus Stand Up!, and, most recently, was a grassroots candidate to represent Ohio's Third Congressional District. Previously, she was a Vice President at Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the nation's largest community development financial institution. Morgan also worked at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as a Senior Advisor to the first Director.

Micah Mitchell is a graduate student at The Ohio State University studying social work and public administration. He has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati. Micah is passionate about activism, advocacy, and direct service. He aspires to work in policy reform divesting from the prison industrial complex and investing in community care.

Kwesi is a Columbus native and long time advocate for social justice in his city. He is the former Ohio director for the League of Young Voters and most recently served as campaign staff for Morgan Harper for Congress. He holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Ohio State. Kwesi continues to fight for justice as he seeks to connect the Columbus movement to a larger national narrative.

GrassRoot Ohio with Lynn Anderson, Doug Fowler, and John Stolz PhD, activists and scientists researching the impact of unconventional shale gas (fracking) extraction in and around Youngstown and the findings of their research entitled, “Assessing the Water Chemistry of Tributaries in the Mahoning River Watershed”.

Lynn Anderson is an artist and activist from Youngstown, Ohio. In 2011 she began protecting her community against the toxic trespass of fracking waste brought in for disposal into injection wells that former Governor Kasich and his administration’s ODNR permitted to be drilled in and around Youngstown. When small earthquakes started on March 17, 2011 and culminated in a 4.0 earthquake on Dec. 31, 2011, Lynn and other members of Occupy Youngstown raised the alarm and began to fight to get the D&L injection well closed down. They continued fighting the oil & gas onslaught from 2012-2013 from fracking wells to pipelines. She spoke out, organized others and helped mount a citizen ballot initiative for nine election cycles to try to keep the land and water safe from fracking waste in her community and Ohio. Lynn is a Founding member of the Youngstown Community Bills of Rights, a Member of Frackfree Mahoning, Board member of TreezPlease and Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund-celdf, supporter.

Doug Fowler has been a teacher for most of his working life. He retired from the University of Wisconsin in 2014 where he lecturered in astronomy and physics. In the mid 70s Fowler studied geology at the University of Montana, and in the fall of 2018 he taught the mineralogy at Youngstown State University. With this background, combined with a longtime interest in wild places, backpacking and mountaineering, he considers himself a natural historian. Fowler continues an association with UW by working with geology and astronomy students using Lunar samples on loan from NASA as part of their educational program and he watches the night sky on a regular basis.

John Stolz is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Director of the Center for Environmental Research and Education at Duquesne University. He received his BS degree from Fordham University in 1977 and earned his PhD at Boston University in microbial ecology and evolution. He was an NRC Post doctoral fellow at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Department of Geology and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology, and an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Plant Biology in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His main research interests are in microbial diversity; the microbial metabolism of metals and metalloids including arsenic, selenium, and nitrate; and water quality impacts of unconventional shale gas extraction. Dr. Stolz has published 94 journal articles, 40 book chapters, and author-edited three books.

#GrassRoot_Ohio with Allen Schwartz and Mona Abhari, kicking off a series of webinars entitled “A Green New Deal that Works for Us”, starting this Saturday, October 3, at 10am, with three more following on consecutive Saturdays, Oct 10, 17 & 24.

Allen Schwartz is a people’s artist and musician. He is a founder of the Newark Think Tank on Poverty in Licking County. There are now associated think tanks on poverty in three, going on four, central Ohio counties. He has had a fifty year career as a community organizer and educator in Seattle, Chicago, and Ohio.

Mona Abhari is a youth organizer in Columbus and Newark, Ohio and an artist. Her personal experiences as a working-class, Palestinian American woman fuel her art, movement work, and relational organizing, and helps ground her in building a better world.
