Carolyn Harding with Claudia Sheehan, Anne Sparks, and Judy Smucker, three Athens County elders who traveled to northern Minnesota this week to support Indigenous women-led water protectors who are resisting construction of an enlarged tar sands pipeline that would take a new route through tribal lands, Enbridge Line 3.

“We stand in support of all who are trying to stop construction of Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline because it would greatly increase flow into the U.S. of Canadian tar sands, a sludge with the same carbon-heavy crude oil as the recently canceled Keystone XL pipeline would have carried. This new section of pipeline will go under more than 200 waterways and cross Mississippi River headwaters twice. Construction, as well as likelihood of leaks, endangers resources, including wild rice, that are critical to survival of the region’s tribal communities.”

The Franklin County Central Committee will vote within the month, amongst 6 or more candidates, many of whom are highly qualified, to take on this Consequential political Position.

Erica Crawley is a State Representative for Ohio’s 26th House District, which is East/Southeast Franklin County, first elected in November 2018. Rep. Crawley is a mother, veteran and advocate. Her career has primarily been in the non-profit sector advocating on behalf of children and families. In the legislature, Erica has worked on maternal and infant health, pay equity, prison reform, early childhood and K12 issues as well as veteran’s housing and employment. She is passionate about community engagement, economic development, and ensuring that all children have the tools that they need to be successful in life. Representative Crawley is a proud Navy Veteran and currently serves as the highest-ranking Democrat on the House Finance committee- the first Black woman to ever hold this position. She is the mother of 16 year old twin girls, Hope & Faith.

Carolyn Harding with Teresa Mills and Roxanne Groff, founders of the Ohio Brine Task Force, educating and organizing the people of Ohio regarding Oil & Gas liquid waste or, “Brine”, which is currently spread on our roadways for dust and ice control, sounding the alarm that this Brine is far more than salty water, in fact it’s dangerous - it’s Radioactive.

For almost 30 years Teresa Mills has worked as a grassroots leader to help communities to find their voices, analyze data and develop strategic plans. She began her activism career by shutting down the Columbus trash Incinerator, which was polluting her neighborhood and was later defined as the largest emitter of dioxin in the country. Teresa is the Executive Director of the Buckeye Environmental Network, a statewide coalition of grassroots-focused groups. Today she works with Center for Health and Environmental Justice to train and assist grassroots leaders across the country. Teresa also coordinates CHEJ’s small Grants Program

Roxanne Groff graduated from Ohio University and made Athens County her home. In 1978 she co-founded Save Our Rural Environment (S.O.R.E.), a grass roots group protesting the permitting of strip mines in eastern Athens County. Her interest in state law and the lack of implementation of rules by the regulatory agencies, led her to run for and win Bern Township Trustee and then Athens County Commissioner. Recently Roxanne has been working with Athens County Fracking Action Network (ACFAN), and Buckeye Environmental Network, opposing permitting toxic radioactive injection wells in Ohio and opposing the sale of mineral parcels on public lands, especially the Wayne National Forest in Ohio. She has lived off the grid for 45 years on her pastoral homestead in rural Athens County.

Two radioactive Brine Bills are before the 134th Ohio General Assembly, as we speak, Ohio House Bill 282 and Senate Bill 171, both written to establish conditions for the sale of Brine as a commodity. One such product, currently marketed under the name AquaSalina, was tested by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Results from the test revealed that this product contains high levels of Radium-226 and Radium-228.

Carolyn Harding with Bill Lyons and Terry Lodge, organizer and legal council for the Columbus Community Bill of Rights and the Ohio Community Rights Network, fighting to protect the water, air, soil & rights of Columbus Metro and communities facing environmental, social, racial & economic harms throughout Ohio.

Bill Lyons is a mathematics and science teacher who has taught nearly 40 years on four different continents at the high school and college levels. He is a co-organizer of the Columbus Community Bill of Rights group and is president of the Ohio Community Rights Group. He has been an activist since 2015 when he got involved in the community rights and rights of nature movements because he is passionate about local democracy and social and environmental justice.

Terry Lodge has 50 years’ experience as an activist and civil and environmental rights lawyer. As a field attorney for the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund since 2014, he’s worked to gain ballot access for grassroots initiatives proposing controversial local laws such as the rights of nature and control of the commons. In court, he’s opposed nuclear power and weapons, corporate welfare, mountaintop removal mining, fracking, and has supported free speech and diversity in the workplace. He’s been recognized by the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability, has received an Access to Justice Award, and is a past Ohio Civil Liberties Union Champion.

On April 16, 2021, The Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, or CELDF, issued a press release stating, “A lawsuit demanding the temporary suspension of a unique Columbus City Charter petition rule was dismissed by the U.S. District Court for Southern Ohio on April 14, 2021. Petitioners seeking to ban harms from the fracking industry within Ohio’s capital city and surrounding watershed filed the lawsuit in June 2020, arguing a June 2020 deadline on signature gathering was unconstitutional during the Covid-19 pandemic and should be extended. The deadline effectively killed ballot access for the initiative, according to the lawsuit. The rule places a one-year timeline on ballot initiative petition gathering. The group has met these requirements in the past, and had it not been for state shutdown orders, were in position to meet the deadline.”

So in effect the US judge Denied the Columbus Community Bill of Rights their Right for Direct Democracy.

Cynthia Brown is a Political Humanitarian, Advocate, Organizer, Strategist, Visionary. She is from Youngstown, Oh, where she

studied Media @ Communication, & Africans Americans Studies at Youngstown, Ohio, and continued her studies in Public Policy at Mesa Community College. She received the Slanczka Achievement Certificate for Diplomacy and the Distinguished Diplomate award for The Model United Conference 65th Far West in San Francisco. She is the Executive Director @ CEO of Heartbeat Movement Inc, and Committee Chair for Accountability Now Ohio.

Sabrina Jordan is the founder/chair of Ohio Families Unite Against Police Brutality, Inc. OFUAPB. She is the proud mother of Jamal Mcshann who was 22 years old when he was killed on October 15, 2013 due to gun violence, and Jamarco Mcshann who was killed when he was 23 years old on October 20th 2017 by the hands of Moraine, Ohio police officers. In February 2018, she had no choice but to stand up, and speak up about gun violence and police brutality, so she began building OFUAPB, “to fight against police brutality and make legislative changes in order to save lives, and to support our extended families, who, while not related by blood, are bonded to us through the needless bloodshed of our loved ones.”

Donald Wiggins began his career in local government and politics in New York City working on public housing and public safety matters. He relocated to Columbus, OH to pursue a Master of Public Administration degree at The Ohio State University—John Glenn College of Public Affairs. He went on to obtain a Juris Doctorate, from Capital University, to further his ability to assist a diverse range of communities and individuals in their quest to remedy challenges caused by ineffective, or nonexistent government policy. After completing law school, he pursued his passion for environmental law and policy, and worked to improve Ohio’s, and the Nation’s, safety net surrounding drinking water sources.

In January 2019 he began to practice law with a focus on appellate law and constitutional law, and in 2020, Donald founded a Civic-Tech company, Initiate Change, LLC., with a vision to develop the software and tools which help free societies flourish by improving citizens civic understanding and access to the levers of legislative and policy change.

It is transforming our underutilized alleys into extended living space for everyone to enjoy, while creating our own Homegrown National Park in Bexley with native plants that support our pollinators and biodiversity. These events and speakers are scheduled throughout the month of May to help participants learn about planting native plants, enhancing gardens for pollinators, and much more! Registration is required and ends 3 hours prior to the start of the event.

Rebecca Ness is the Vice Chair for Green Bexley. She’s spearheading Love Your Alley, a revitalized and expanded Bexley initiative. Love Your Alley is aimed at transforming our underutilized alleys into extended living space filled with native plants and artwork for everyone to enjoy. She also organizes kids’ green boot camps to help children learn about and appreciate the natural world. She facilitates the Green Bexley Parent’s Facebook Group. Rebecca is an Acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist and recognizes the strong correlation between the planet’s health and human health. She moved to Bexley from San Francisco mid-2017 with her husband, two young boys and small dog.

Kevin Doenges is an amateur naturalist with a passion for gardening with Ohio native plants and studying insects. He is an active member of the South Eastmoor Civic Association located on Columbus's mideast side. While working with this association, he has assisted with organizing plant swaps and helping to create and maintain a native plant garden in Brownlee Park. Using the pollinator garden, Kevin and other volunteers plan to host small classes to educate citizens of the importance of native plants.

Rev. Joan VanBecelaere is the Executive Director of UU Justice Ohio. This past election season, she also directed Ohio UU the Vote and was Chair of the Registration Team of the Nonpartisan Ohio Voter Outreach Committee (NOVOC). Before working for UUJO, she worked as UUA staff and was vice president for student services at Iliff School of Theology, Denver CO. She lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her spouse, Jerry, and 4 felines all named after Hebrew Bible prophets and royalty.

Kristen Beireis is the Community Organizer at UU Justice Ohio. Last election season she organized 26 congregations to participate in Ohio UU The Vote and helped activists acclimate to the digital version of voter advocacy. Kristen has worked as Program Coordinator in school based non-profit programs and has a long history in online marketing. She volunteers as a Hike Leader in local Metro Parks, sings in choirs and musical theater, leads a Facebook group of almost 1000 activists and has been organizing since 2016. Kristen and her Husband live in the Dayton, Ohio area with their feline friend, Hobbes.

Carolyn Harding with Abbie Sigmon and Donny Murray, of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby.

Abbie Sigmon is the Citizens' Climate Lobby - Columbus Chapter co-liaison to Congresswoman Joyce Beatty's office. A proud native Ohioan, she has recently moved back to Ohio after living in Oregon, California, Pennsylvania, and China (but hopes to make Columbus her "forever home"). While living this rootless lifestyle, she has volunteered and worked for Save the Bay, Sierra Club, the Institute for Natural Resources, and various colleges and universities as an educator. In her spare time she is a music and soccer enthusiast.

Donny has been a long time advocate for the environment and has served in volunteer roles for Green Columbus and the Sierra Club. He also helped lead the successful effort to #SaveTheCrew. Over the past two years he's co-led the Columbus Chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby. During the 9 to 5 hours he works at Nationwide Insurance as an Internal Auditor. He lives in Merion Village with his wife and son.

As an environmental activist, I know there are many fronts to sustainability, and just as many tactics. I’ve been rubbing shoulders with Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteers for a good while, and we’re looking forward to learning what you are up to.
