  • Episode 10 - Interview with Xanthe Alexis

    Send us Fan Mail

On this epic episode number 10 (Woot woot!), I was able to have a very epic guest in the form of Colorado Springs spiritual songmaker and vocal angelic demigod Xanthe Alexis. Whether she’s guiding patients to recovery as a trauma therapist or transporting audiences to transcendence as an acclaimed indie artist, Xanthe Alexis has devoted her life to healing others, and her extraordinary new album, ‘The Offering’ (out 8/21/2020), is no exception. Recorded in Alexis’s adopted hometown of Colorado Springs, the record pairs soaring melodies with lush, hypnotic soundscapes as it grapples with anxiety and strength, worry and comfort, heartbreak and hope. Hinting at everything from Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten to Julien Baker and Feist, it’s a deeply compassionate, unflinchingly honesty collection, and one that finds Alexis baring her most vulnerable self in a timely and much-needed act of radical empathy and connection. NPR's KEXP Radio in Seattle ran a Q&A, calling out her “transcendent vocals" on the air. I was honoured to chat with this musical pal who I've never met in real life, and who has such an interesting view of all things musical, our connection with others and the earth, and motherhood. Have a listen and do your best to stay kind at all times.

My new album "Geographics" is out now on all platforms. You can buy the digital, cd and vinyl versions of the album on my bandcamp page, (which helps me greatly) but I understand that cash is tight all over the map, so you can also order a five dollar Geographics sticker. 5 beans! This album is really special to me (as my friends Melissa Payne and Charles Austin played all over it) and I hope you'll come along for the supersonic ride. • Episode 9 - Interview with Slow Leaves

    Send us Fan Mail

In this 9th and mystical episode of the Graventown pod, I had the chance to talk with song-forger and tune-wielder and long-time pal Grant Davidson who is known musically as Slow Leaves. Slow Leaves is Winnipeg songwriter Grant Davidson. His 2020 record, Shelf Life (working title), marks his third studio album under the moniker Slow Leaves. With a laid-back crooner’s lilt and nylon string guitar, Davidson finds universal themes through the deeply personal. Exploring ideas of lost time, elusive wisdom, romantic realism, and the struggle to reconcile family life, art, and aging, Slow Leaves persists in finding poetry in ordinary things and a humanity that shines in even the darkest corners. He also recorded, mixed and produced his latest album "Holiday" at a dark peak of Covid in his basement. Grant is an always interesting and unique voice in the music world, and it was an honour to catch up and chat with this melodic magician.  Have a listen and do your best to stay kind at all times.

  • Episode 8 - Interview with Eamon McGrath

    Send us Fan Mail

Fun to be back in the Graventown Podcast command centre - and I was lucky enough to catch up with a singer songwriter who is literally always on the international road; Eamon McGrath. Eamon McGrath is a Canadian musician and writer from Edmonton, Alberta and is currently based in Toronto, Ontario. On his own, his raw live performances are most often folk-oriented, where McGrath plays songs from his deep catalogue on acoustic instruments, but with a band the live show takes on a much more high-energy, punk rock influenced vein. Having just seen him open for his pals July Talk a few weeks back, Eamon was very open and candid with me about some hard times he's been through recently and we got very deep about songwriting. Have a listen and do your best to stay kind at all times.

Friends - it's been a minute! But I'm back at the podcast helm to enliven your minds with a few red-hot-and-ready musician interviews in the magical hopper, and I can't wait to share them with you. I had the chance to chat with Skye Wallace a few nights after I saw her and her magical band perform a stellar show at the Bronson Centre in Ottawa. Skye Wallace is what happens when a trained singer with folk roots discovers punk rock in their youth and creates the rock & roll show you've always wanted. Wallace’s new self-titled album embodies rock-fire Canadiana. From living on BC’s west coast, to spending time at residencies from Norris Point, Newfoundland to Dawson City, Yukon, the Toronto-based artist has been inspired by every corner of the country. Having production on past albums with Jim Bryson and many other collaborators, Skye is a positive-fire-force to be reckoned with. Send us Fan Mail

Graventowners: It's been a minute! I've been busy as a bee since returning back from recording my new album "Simple Complex" in Halifax  with Joel Plaskett and Charles Austin and friends, but I've got a few new episodes in the hopper. This was one that I recorded as my "Journey's End" reflection in the HFX airport. I talked a lot about the essence of making an album, and even putting a song into the world, and I recounted most of the recording process and also just some of my pathway steps as a musician to this point in my life. I was in a real William Miller/Lester Bangs mood so the Almost Famous references are good and plenty.  I hope it finds you well.
