White guilt, red funerals, and blue crystal (m*th) - ain't that America?! To be honest, this episode is a bit all over the place, but we do learn that deep down DJ is a geologist.
Stewart Huff is a comedian and sage based in Atlanta who collects junk for a job now - as in he has a podcast about things he finds. This week he sat down with Drew to talk about it, but they of course veered into murkier territory. Stewart's unique take on life, and having something deeper than hope to keep you going, moved Drew to near speechlessness - IMAGINE THAT! There is a kindness in this man that will make you fall in love with him. But if that doesn't do it, the story about facing off with the Klan will. Check out Stewart Huff's Obsessive Curiosities and his stand up online.
Trigger Warning: we talk about sexual abuse in this episode.
The difference between ignorance and hate, the lack of nuance on the internet, and weed so strong you stop right in the middle of a brilliant point to admire shape of your dog's butt - we really are at our best worst on this one folks.
Today we are joined by the Eastern Kentucky Haint herself - Auntie Bernice aka Haint T aka the Sexy Sex Educator - Tanya Turner. We talk about sex education in the rural south, pagan holidays, and of course - what businesses are the best to take a good ol' American dump in.
This is a fun episode. You're gonna love it. Stop reading and listen.
Today we are joined by author poet and activist Misty Skaggs as we discuss Mutual Aid, poetry, Appalachian culture, and dirty coffee pots. We go deep on what it means to help people and what it means to help EVERYONE, regardless of who they are. Also, DJ comes to an important conclusion about his own growth, and the mysterious fart creek.
Misty can be found on social media under @MistyMarieRae and her group is the Eastern Kentucky Mutual Aid Community Fund.
**** Had a laptop computer crash situation folks. This episode is just the raw file. Sorry for the inconvenience.****
This episode officially launches the Into the Abiscuit campaign to put the Mamaws Back on the Porch! Mamaws belong on the porch and Papaw should be at the Hardee's! Not on the internet. Get em off the internet folk, and back to the VFW where they can't hurt anyone.
We also discuss our plan to get vaccines to rural people via new flavors of Doritos.
We are joined today by political organizer Tosh Briquet to discuss various ways folks can get involved in the political process right now. More importantly, they make a strong case for why doing that can still lead to change. Fighting nihilism and hopelessness seems to be a key step in moving toward anything resembling progress - Tosh lays out how.
Activist, organizer, and author Warren Tidwell has been leading mutual aid efforts and coordinating resources among and between different regions of the Southeastern United States in times of disaster for many years now. He offers a lot of wisdom in terms of how we deal with - practically and philosophically - the at-the-moment undeniable fact that we are on our own.
Warren remains a hopeful man, and speaks passionately to the power of community. We think you will enjoy it.
We have a special scheduling announcement to announce on our announcement today.
