  • Tom Brady - Getting Better at Getting Worse

Two weeks ago in episode 85 of the podcast, you heard me briefly reference Tom Brady as the guy that Trent Dilfer was talking about when I first heard him say the quote I discussed on that episode, "How you do small things is how you do all things."

Today, we go straight to Brady for the quote I discuss. The actual quote is new to me, for I first heard it from Brady on a podcast he was interviewed on called Armchair Expert. It's a three-sentence quote, but I will focus on the final sentence of the quote more than anything else because it is so powerful and so true. Check it out and see if you don't agree with me.

  • Dave Maynard - Perfect Practice

Today we are back to the interview format for the show. I interview veteran coach of a variety of sports, Dave Maynard.

Coach Dave talks about a great quote that he used to hear his father say when he was coaching and that I first heard college basketball coach, Rick Pitino say - "Practice doesn't make perfect—perfect practice makes perfect." We have a great discussion on the quote, as well as a variety of other coaching and athletic topics that our discussion led to.

If you would like to connect with Dave and discuss anything he brought up on the show, he can be reached at [email protected].

  • Trent Dilfer - How You Do Small Things

This might be the most important quote I've ever done on the show. Okay, that's probably a stretch and a bit of hyperbole, but I'm not sure that it is. It's also not meant to discredit all the great quotes that I have talked about or that our guests have talked about. It's just that this quote is all about the discipline to do everything in your life the right way so as to maximize your chances for success and your impact in the world.

It comes to us from former NFL quarterback and current high school football coach, Trent Dilfer. I'm sure Dilfer himself would tell you he didn't come up with the quote because I have heard him say something to the effect of, "You know what they say..." each time I've heard him say it. Still, he's the guy I first heard it said in this way, so I am giving him credit for at least bringing it into my life the way he said it.

It's a great quote about the importance of taking care of all of the supposed little things in life that are ultimately huge if we are going to be our best.

  • Karl Norton - Influence Isn't Neutral

Today I interview veteran youth hockey coach, Karl Norton. Karl talks about a great quote by sports psychologist, Dr. Jerry Lynch - "Your influence is never neutral."

We have a great discussion on the quote, and we explore a variety of topics that it led to, the biggie being the value of a "games-approach" to practice vs. a "drills-approach." I really enjoyed the discussion and all that I learned from Karl, and I think you will, too. He also has me really excited about trying some new things with my basketball team this year!

If you would like to connect with Karl and discuss anything he brought up on the show, he can be reached at [email protected].

  • Get What You Reward

This week we continue Season 3 with another episode where I will be talking about an impactful quote. This is  Part 2 of a 2-part episode that I began last week. Today's quote and last week's quote are quite similar to one another, but their focus is just a bit different, so I thought I would talk about each of them over these two weeks.

This week's quote carries on the concept of getting more improvement in the areas where we want to improve by focusing our attention on them. The difference is that instead of focusing on "measurement" like we did last week, this week we focus on "rewarding" the behaviors and skills that we want to see more of.

I first heard this quote from Bruce Brown of Proactive Coaching in the presentation "First Steps to Great Teams" and later in "Team-Building through Positive Conditioning." I absolutely love this quote, and I have used it ever since hearing it for the first time. I think it is one that you are going to love, too.

You should definitely check out both of those presentations and the booklets that support them at www.proactivecoaching.info. Proactive Coaching is a valuable resource that you will want to go to for help & guidance throughout your career!

Also, last week we introduced you to some new new intro and outro music for our show, and we continue that this week and will do so on into the foreseeable future. The song is called "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass. I think it's a nice, lively, upbeat tune for our show. Thanks to Krisztian for a great song!

  • Karl Pearson - Measure to Improve

We continue Season 3 of the "Great Quotes for Coaches" podcast with another episode where I will be talking about an impactful quote. This is actually Part 1 of a 2-part episode. Today's quote and next week's quote are quite similar to one another, but their focus is just a bit different, so I thought I would talk about each of them over the next two weeks.

Today's quote comes from English mathematician and biostatistician, Karl Pearson. It is about the important of measuring the things that you want to improve at. While I have done this throughout my career as a teacher and coach, I had not heard the actual quote until the last few years, and then I had never heard the second part of the quote until the last couple of months. It is a great quote for us to focus on as we are trying to become the best we're capable of becoming.

Also, you will notice new intro and outro music in today's show. The song is called "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass. I think it's a nice, lively, upbeat tune for our show. Thanks to Krisztian for a great song!

  • Kurt Warner - "You Gotta' Do What You Gotta' Do"

Season 3 of the "Great Quotes for Coaches" podcast opens up with a new episode about a single impactful quote. This one is from Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Kurt Warner. The quote came from his Hall of Fame induction speech, and it spoke to a concept that many of us deal with in some fashion from time-to-time. It is also a great lesson for us to teach the young people in our lives.

However, the first part of the quote had massive personal impact for me over the last few days and weeks and then in a larger scope, the last two years. You will hear what I am referring to in the episode.

  • Wooden - Pyramid - The Apex - Success!

Today we finish up the series we have done for the last few months discussing John Wooden's "Pyramid of Success" and a variety of quotes in support of it. We have finished all the blocks and all of the mortar elements that holds the blocks together.  We have reached The Apex of the Pyramid - Success!

We come full circle today. We started the series out discussing Wooden's definition of success and how it was that he started to create his Pyramid of Success. Today we will return to that definition and discuss how it applied to Wooden's life, but more importantly, how it can apply to your life. You will hear seven quotes today in support of the concept of Patience.

I hope you have enjoyed listening to this series as much as I have enjoyed bringing it to you. • Wooden - Pyramid - Mortar #10 - Faith

Today we continue the series discussing John Wooden's "Pyramid of Success" and a variety of quotes in support of it. We have finished all the blocks of the Pyramid, and today we will finish the  mortar elements that hold the blocks together.

The first nine mortar elements were Ambition, Sincerity, Adaptability, Honesty, Resourcefulness, & Reliability, Fight, & Integrity, & Patience.

Mortar Element #10 is Faith. Wooden put the final two Mortar Elements, Patience & Faith, at the top because he felt they were the most important ones and that you couldn't have Competitive Greatness (the final building block at the top of the pyramid) without them.

Faith was a huge part of John Wooden's life. He was a devout Christian and believed strongly in God and in the teachings of Jesus. While he did not preach to his players or push his religion onto others, he lived his life as he thought Jesus would want him to. He felt that by being an example of Jesus's teachings, that would be the best way to expose people to them. There is much to take from this episode on Faith, whether you are a Christian or not, as there are a lot of different ways to have faith in our world.

You will hear eight quotes today in support of the concept of Faith.

Next week we will wrap up this series when we reach The Apex of the Pyramid of Success.
