Most of the time, we know what to say to console someone going through a struggle. We know that when we are weak, He is strong. We know not to grow wearing in doing well. We know that we are on the winning side. But there are times when even with all we know, we find ourselves feeling hopeless. We are often our own worst critics. Even though we know that God is for us, we look at our limitations and shortcomings and question if He will see us through. If we are not careful, we will spend so much time looking at what we do not have and lose sight of what we have. In our text, Peter could have dwelt on the fact that he did not have any money. Instead, he remembered WHO he had. Peter knew what he had, and he knew enough to use it. Peter did not have what the man asked for, but he offered what he had, which was much more valuable.

Jesus is on his way to Jerelusum, where He will eventually be crucified. He stops by Martha’s home in Bethany for what will be the last time. Martha busied herself with things to provide for her guests while Jesus ministers to the others in the house. At some point, Martha realizes that her sister, Mary, is not helping, but sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening. Her temper gets the best of her, and she approaches Jesus to rebuke Mary and tell her to help. Instead of a rebuke of her sister, she receives one herself. Martha was busy with many things, but she missed the main something occurring in her home. She was more caught up in serving Jesus than she was in pleasing Him. We can get so caught up in doing that we forget about pleasing Him. While focusing on important things, Martha was distracted from the most important thing. We, too, can lose focus as we strive to do good works in the Kingdom of God. Often we have to stop and evaluate ourselves to make sure we are focusing on the essential thing and not just the important things.
