An OK Dystopia

In my quest for more and more dystopias, I found two books about a future where there are few men, if any. One was written by a man, one by a woman. I couldn't wait to see the difference between the two! Nomansland by Lesley Hauge is the woman's perspective of what life would be like without men.

Keller is a Tracker "in training". Trackers protect the Foundland from interlopers... men in particular. Foundland has survived for generations as a woman-only civilization and would like to keep it that way. After sickness and mutations decimated the population, a group of women moved north to a college campus where they have learned to survive. Everyone has a job, but everyone may be subject to impregnation if the Committee suspects a wave of fertility is spreading. Impregnation is not optional, and is done from sperm saved from a sperm bank, but Trackers are rarely impregnated.

When the rebellious Laing finds a house from before, the girls sneak off every chance they get to revel in the found objects. They still don't know why the Committee members are at the campus, but they can't resist the house and its forbidden objects like high heels, makeup, magazines, and most forbidden in Foundland, mirrors. But there is more to Foundland than they are told. While found objects and fashion are forbidden, the Committee uses them regularly. They have to come from somewhere. Keller begins to suspect there is more to Foundland and the world than they have been led to believe. But can she stand up against what she has always known?

This book had a really great premise, but I am afraid it fell a little short for me. It was really good, but I wouldn't say it was excellent or my favorite dystopian world. The characters were interesting, but you don't learn about anyone other than Keller in much depth until the very end. Amos, the experienced Tracker, is a wonderful mix of obedience and rebel that will keep you wanted more. But the book starts a little slow.

Better than the first!

When I finished reading The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan I wanted to immediately dive into the second book in the series, The Demon's Covenant and yet at the same time I was hesitant to do so. The reason being that the narration switches POV from Nick to Mae and I wasn't sure how that would work. For you see, I'd fallen in love with this world through Nick's eyes and then I was about to be tossed into a new head and who knows what I might have to relearn. But I did dive in and it wasn't long before I realized that I had nothing to worry about as Brennan is quite the story teller. This series isn't about really about whose eyes you are looking through because each new set of eyes only adds to the magic and realism of the world that Brennan has created.

Demon's Covenant picks up shortly after Lexicon leaves off and its not long before the shenanigans begin. As with Lexicon some of my favorite moments came from Nick and Jamie interacting. I swear Brennan could write a book with just the two of them in a room talking and I would probably love it. I also really liked seeing Nick and the gang through Mae's eyes. Mae is a mortal and she's still new to the whole idea of magicians and demons and yet she is very accepting of the chaos that her life has become. She thinks that she yearns for a normal life but part of her craves that adventure that the Reves brothers brings. Its always hard to go backwards when your eyes have been opened.

This book makes you fall in love with Mae and her strength. She is a kick ass girl who doesn't take crap from anyone but she's vulnerable too which makes her relateable. She's the sort of girl that you want to be if you ever find yourself in a situation where you have to battle demons and magicians. Another thing that I really liked about Demon's Covenant is that it doesn't fall into the book two of a trilogy trap. You know the one, where nothing much happens in book two and its all just a set up for the big climax in the last book. Well, this book doesn't do that. Yes there is set up for what happens in the last book but this one has enough action and plot to stand on its own.

This is one of those books where once you start reading you really don't want it to stop.

Really good series

Love these books. Ordered them for my 12 year old, but I love them too.

Start with book #1

BUY the whole series! I wish she would write more! This is a well-written series and love the setting. Really enjoyed it.

Fast Read

I went through these books quickly. This was a fun read especially since I had gotten to know the characters throughout the prior books. Ferguson brings together the tension, humor and drama quite nicely. The book was a balanced fun read for me.

Story line was too contrived

Plot was a little too mechanical for me . The coincidences to bring characters together was too unrealistic . Do not like a story that ends by trying to get the reader to buy the next in the series

Circles of blood

Over all it was a good book. It annoyed me some of the stupid decisions she made. Although her actions I'm the end kind of are up for it.

Good look at the future

I very much liked the way the future is described, especially our social life on the internet and artificial life, however the story was a bit shallow and full of stereotypes. Clearly written for a sequel I will not read.

This is also a "young adult" book, but found it too course to recommend to my children.

Horribly Depressing

If you want a book that will show you a horible world download this. Lia Kan is a rich spoild brat and she stays like that throughout the book, she has absolutely no redemable qualities. It was interesting for a while and the points it brought up were thought prevoking and very interesting, but if your looking for book where everything turns out alright in the end this isn't for you. I didn't like the book but it made me think. The only charicter that I found at all good at all worthwhile, well lets just say it didn't turn out good for him.

Entertaining

This is a most entertaining audiobook, and often absolutely hilarious too. It seems like a window into more exciting and innocent times. A thoroughly joyful listening experience.

Fab book, fab reading, not just for kids!

I've listened to talking books all my life and this series is as good as it can get. Fast paced, terrifying, mysterious, characters with depth that you love, and a beautifully descriptive writing style that is rare these days. Paver has created a world sort of like our own pre-history, but with an added extra magic; rather like Garth Nix or JK Rowling.

What makes these listens so wonderful is the real coup of getting Ian McKellen to read them. He is a wonderful reader, and brings the books to full blooded life.

This review is for the 5th book, but could be for any of them in the series, they are all very good. Listen in order, if you can. Well worth it!

Nicely done!

Introducing Ruin Mist serves as an introduction to Robert Stanek's fantasy world. This is nicely done and worth a listen whether you are a fan or not. It's short and free. Very cool!

Interesting introduction to Ruin Mist

As an introduction to Stanek's amazing fantasy world, this is pretty decent. The music throughout adds to the experience. With a running time of about 9 1/2 minutes, it's short enough to hold anyone's interest. As a longtime read of the author's work, I enjoyed learning more about the history of the world and the many languages and peoples.

I think any fan of the author will love it. Those who are new to the author may find it a bit short but hey it's free.

Very Amazing!

Robert Stanek's Ruin Mist books include The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches books and the In the Service of Dragons books. This is a very good introduction to his amazing books.

Fantastic intro!

Like the title of my review says this is a fantastic intro to Robert Stanek's amazing fantasy world. A worthwhile listen for anyone even remotely interested in fantasy or scifi. Definitely recommended to get a better understanding of the books and the world.

Outcast

This is book 4 in the series and my personal favourite. In this book, Torak is cast out from the clans and cut off from his friends, and meanwhile his enemies are closing in. This book sees Torak at his most vulnerable and is an extremely powerful and moving story. It also reintroduces Bail, a character who first appeared in Spirit Walker. Together, he and Ren must save Torak from his enemies and more importantly from himself.

gripping

Great story - gritty and tense throughout, with brilliant details from stone-age setting. McKellen's voice is mesmerising. I will work my way through the whole set in time. Fully recommended!

Excellent

An excellent companion. Beautifully conceived and written. The story seems to grow organically and effortlessly. The character development is sensitive, subtle and strong. Ian McKellan's narration is first rate. Thank you, Michelle, for another thoroughly engaging read.

Great Book

Really enjoyed this book, had read it as a child but the narration by Ian McKellen was fantastic, he does the voices incredibly well and brings the book to life. The plot is good, it's just one of those books you can listen to anywhere, anytime and still enjoy it. Really recommend it.
