    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
Six days after an InStyle-worthy wedding in Los Angeles, Lisa Fineberg Cook left behind her little red Jetta, her manicurist of 10 years, and her very best friend for the land of the rising sun. When her husband accepted a job teaching English in Nagoya, Japan, she imagined exotic weekend getaways, fine sushi dinners, and sake sojourns with glamorous expatriate friends. Instead, she's the only Jewish girl on public transportation, and everyone is staring.
Lisa longs for regular mani/pedis, valet parking, and gimlets with her girlfriends, but for the next year, she learns to cook, clean, commute, and shop like the Japanese, all the while adjusting to another foreign concept - marriage. Loneliness and frustration give way to new and unexpected friendships, the evolution of old ones, and a fresh understanding of what it means to feel different - until finally a world she never thought she'd fit into begins to feel home-like, if not exactly like home.

Racist - definition of the ugly American
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A story that celebrated the opportunity to live in another culture
What was most disappointing about Lisa Cooks story?
Her assumption that it is acceptable to disrespect people in other countries ("they all look alike"); that the goal of every culture should be to mirror America; and the assumption that people in other countries spend all their time staring at her. Please!
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Whiny - but that was probably the character rather than the performer
What character would you cut from Japan Took the Jap Out of Me?
The main character should be ashamed of herself
    Any additional comments?
The very first Audible in 5+ years that I have absolutely hated
    Entitled Valley Girl whining
The story of the quintessential narrow-minded, sheltered, snarky ,entitled twenty-something so prevalent in modern America.
I kept hoping something horrible would happen to the "heroine", in the process teaching her how shallow she is. Alas, I couldn't stomach the pity party long enough to find out of it did.
The narration is the only redeeming quality of this turkey and the only reason I didn't give it a straight one.

Tara Duncan is an inspiring heroine, whose adventures and personal struggles will captivate readers already hooked by fantasy adventures and characters like Harry Potter. This is the first installment of the Tara Duncan series - an epic adventure full of magic and bravery that is sure to cast a spell on young listeners!
    Editorial Reviews:
Plenty of kids would do anything for magic powers, but for 12-year-old Tara Duncan, the ability to send friends and enemies flying is a nuisance - and a mystery. No one seems to understand what's going on, least of all Tara's strict grandmother Isabella, until Tara learns a secret that will shake her understanding of everything she thought she knew. Performer Carmela Corbett's delightful English accent is a perfect fit for this story, which is sure to please fans of Harry Potter and similarly magical tales.

Tara Duncan is the best thing since Harry Potter series. I only wish they would continue to translate more of the books!
    Great!!!
Excellent book! I bought it for my daughter and I thought it sounded good so I read/listened to it too. It was very good, much better than I expected. Great adventure and characters! If you like Harry Potter, I think this would be something you would enjoy too!

Not enough paranormal to this mystery
It's a decent story but the narrator grates on my nerves. She sounds like Thurston Howell III when she attempts to narrate a males voice. There isn't much to add to the summary provided by Audible. Not great but not bad either, just mediocre.

Everyone knows NOT to open the door
    ....
...Except this chick. Seriously I actually loved this tale and storyline... but I really got tired of the "bait dangling" script gimick. It was just frustrating like watching old horror movies where the damsel KEEPS... FALLING... DOWN... !!
I mean really wonderful, complex characters. Convincing interpersonal dialogue. But for God's sakes... after you've been in almost the exact same life threatening situation (and survived it a few times)... do you not get a little smarter? A little more cautious?
    (***possible spoiler****)
I mean....at what point does it finally dawn on you (pun intended) that vampires COME OUT AT NIGHT and so you need to be AND STAY someplace safe at that time?!
That said.... will read sequel. And pray the new "near death" plot sequences don't make me hit the pause button and look heaven-ward for patience.
Good story, 2nd book is even better
I really enjoyed this 2 book series,
The book starts a little slow but then gets better and better.
Dont miss it, among the best teen stories i have read.
AS Good as twilight !!!! But with a twisted.
If you like Twilight. This is for you. This is a great series. But with a different twist. I couldn`t put the book down.

Kayla is a 16-year-old girl who was adopted when she was little. She lives a normal life, with great friends, loving adoptive parents, and well...a not-so-great boyfriend. But the reason why she was given up for adoption was far from any usual reason. She was meant to be kept away from the Academy and anything else related to the supernatural beings that could hurt her.
Unfortunately for Kayla, it was only a matter of time before she encountered the creatures from the Otherworld, and there is just no running away from the beings that she can now see. In trying to protect Kayla by keeping her away from the Academy, she may have just been put in even more danger.

    Never want it to end!
First of all, I wanted to give a shout out to new Narrator of the book, Sarah McKee. For this being her first audible book, she did an amazing job of capturing Kayla's emotion. By the end of the story... she had me so sucked in, I was devastated when it ended. I hope that she continues the series.
Wide Awake was a wonderful book... I love the way the friendship between Hunter and Kayla builds though the entire book. All the twist and turns as she navigate through all the changes in her life kept me glued to the book. I completed the book in 3 hours... I think it might be a record for me. I could not put it down and could not wait to see what was going to happen on the next page.
I am looking forward to completing the trilogy!
So, get the next books done quickly please! I want more!

not as good as book 1
loved book 1 and even pre ordered book 2 but was a bit disappointed, was glad the journey continued but it was a bit repetitive and it has become more of a money making book.
meaning it was just written to have another book not because the the author had so many more thing to tell.
i would second guess buying book 3 after listening to this one.
Good story, if a bit confusing
I've enjoyed this series so far. However, I found the second book harder to keep up with than the first. The timelines and crossing between them got to be hard to keep track of. But, whenever I got back on track, I continued to enjoy the story.
Narration: Unfortunately. I'm not a fan of Matthew Brown. His female voices are indistinguishable from one another and he only has 2-3 distinct male voices, unless a regional access is involved. That makes listening to the story a bit more difficult. I usually have to wait for a character to state who's talking.

    Members Reviews:
    Amazing performance
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would definitely recommend this, because the narrator is fantastic and the story is great as well. The main character is a "quiet type," but she has a real inner strength and is a survivor whose story is compelling.
Also, the story touches on narratives about the Civil War that many people might have forgotten about, ignored, or never been taught. Jenna gets thrown back in time to a period just after the Emancipation Proclamation and just before the draft riots. A lot of the book is devoted to describing the rising tensions between the free African Americans and the Irish immigrants leading up to the riots. The two groups have to compete for jobs, acceptance, food, etc. while both being scorned by the upper classes. I'm a history nut so I knew about the events she describes, but some people might not even know there was a draft during the Civil War.
What does Quincy Tyler Bernstine bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I have been listening to audiobooks for a little while now, and the performance of Quincy Tyler Bernstine is one of the best -- if not THE best -- audiobook performances I have ever listened to. She has such an amazing sense of the character's voice, intonations, emotions, pacing and speed, and just...wow, what a great "listen"!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This book is really intense, so I didn't want to listen to it all at once (plus, the length would make that a bit difficult). At times, it can feel like the characters are going through a neverending parade of misery, and you need a break from all the depressing stuff.
    Any additional comments?
Not for the fainthearted, since parts are pretty violent.
    Beautiful
Zetta Elliot is Octavia Butler for teens. In A Wish After Midnight her works shows a high level of research and artistry. She educates youth on issues of race and gender all the while entertaining them. Her character Jenna evolves from an insecure girl into a confident young woman. She tells stories that must be told.

    Genres: Teens, Sci-Fi & Fantasy
    Publisher's Summary:
Lord of the Flies meets War of the Worlds in this postapocalyptic tale of two teens and a young girl with amazing powers who must stop the aliens' mysterious plan.
Earth has been conquered by an alien race known as the Assembly. The adult human population is gone, having succumbed to the Tone - a powerful, telekinetic supersignal that has reduced them to a state of complete subservience. But the Tone has one critical flaw: it only affects those over the age of twenty, which means that there is one group left to fight - teens.
Holt Hawkins is a bounty hunter, and his current target is Mira Toombs, a treasure seeker who has escaped from Midnight City after being sentenced to death. It's not long before Holt bags his prey, but their instant connection isn't something Holt bargained for - and neither is the Assembly ship that crash - lands near them shortly after he captures Mira. Venturing aboard despite Mira's objections, Holt finds a young girl who can't remember anything except her name: Zoey.
The three soon begin an adventure through alien-conquered North America, encountering young freedom fighters, powerful artifacts that seem magical, pirates and brigands, and frightening mutated creatures of the night, all while trying to stay one step ahead of the Assembly. As Zoey starts to exhibit amazing powers, Holt and Mira realize that this young girl just may be the key to stopping the alien invaders.
Midnight City is the breathtaking first book in the Conquered Earth series, which chronicles three young people and their journey through a dangerous world they are trying to save.
    J. Barton Mitchell is a screenwriter, comic-book writer, and author. He studied creative writing at the University of Houston before going on to receive a BS in film studies from the University of Texas. After selling screenplays to Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox, he created and wrote the comic-book series Poe. He lives and writes in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles.
    Critic Reviews:
    "I have succumbed to
Midnight City! Just like Holt, who fights to liberate a conquered Earth, I now see that great things can happen. After all, J. Barton Mitchell wrote this novel. I have hope of another. As soon as possible." (Nancy Holder,
    New York Times bestselling author)
"[Mitchell's] first in a dystopian sci-fantasy series is an imaginative mix of danger and humor.... The action will keep readers turning the pages." (
    Kirkus Reviews)
    "
Midnight City hooked me right from the moment Holt first tries to capture Mira and takes her prisoner only to realize he's dealing with a girl who's got some serious survival skills. The two characters are complete equals, more than any other fictional costar team I've read and yet they're enemies. I knew exactly what would happen with Mira and Holt's instant chemistry and yet, I had to read on just to watch this amazing, action-packed journey, both emotional and physical, unfold." (Julie Cross, international bestselling author of
    Tempest)
    Members Reviews:
I could see it all unfolding in my mind!
I loved, loved, loved this story!
I won't go into analyzing the characters or summarizing the plot because many reviewers before me have already done so. I will say, though, that J. Barton Mitchell has an ability to bring his characters and scenes to life in your own imagination.
