A book for young adults set in the regency era.

I might have liked the book better if it was from an adults point of view, instead of this book being a teenage book about witches with all the teenage angst that young adult books come in. I got this book on sale and was aware of the genre at the time that it probably was a young adult book, but have simply grown tired of the genre since I bought the book. I was confused by the purpose of The Order in general and had questions that didnt seem to be answered. The magic hierarchy was not explained very well and I kept asking myself what is the point. Even when the characters were in the order it didnt explain what they do and why people were hunted. I felt like there was parts missing and too many characters with their own side story that were added to the story for me to identify with the main ones. Maybe I wasnt paying enough attention because the narrator drove me crazy, very cringe worthy.

A Series of Unfortunate Events. Just when you think it can't possibly get any worse, it does. WAY worse!

Which character as performed by Mikael Naramore was your favorite?

It's so hard to pick! The voice of Val is eloquent and believable. Claire comes across as a totally girly-girl, turned kick-butt. Dean is the oft misunderstood little brother... Do I need to go on? These characters all have distinct voices, and are awesome! Obviously, the person whose POV is told is the fave (Dean), but the rest deserve honorable mention.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!!! Had this been half as long, I would have. As it was, I managed to listen to over FIVE HOURS in one sitting! That is a record for me! Love this series so much!!!

Any additional comments?

I just want to say that the books are awesome. The narration is flawless. If I were to compare the inflections of each character from this (book 6) to book one, I would be able to tell each voice, without prompting. That is a huge achievement! The other major point is like to make: it's really HARD to keep a fan base through a series, for small pub and indie authors! My hat is off to Chrissy Peebles, for managing to hold my attention for SIX books in a series that I learned about on Facebook! Kudos! I'll be downloading book 7,as soon as I get paid!

Turned Out Ok After Odd Start.

Cons: Odd Phrasing. (Assumptions that readers are football fans.)

This book started very mysteriously with Sam running through a woods. which I liked up until I came across this line "He winced and took a knee." This seems so out of place in the scene. It was a phrase that I was completely unfamiliar with. I didn't know if this was a typo or what. Within the first page of the book its completely lost me . I am thinking , his knee , is there a knee joint lying on the ground ? How and why does the author use this sentence in correlation with the events.

Normally I delete a book for this sort of thing but, I was curious enough and had some time to search the internet. Turns out it's a football term and the author assumes every reader is going to be familiar with the sport. It is used to run out the clock without turning over the ball. Still doesn't seem to fit.

Pros

Giving the book another chance I found the story to be pretty good . It was not as bad as I first thought it was going to be. As far as theme of the book goes, it is a little like The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe as Sam discovers things aren't as mundane as his life seems to be.

Leaves us in a Suspense state.

I loved the book kept me reading to the end. Hate spiders. Some spots were slow for normal day life. But just enough from the sister messing around meanly with her brother or mean school pranks going on. When certain things started happening it sure can pull you in. Makes you wonder whats really going on. I thought it was well written and the characters have me wanting to know what will happen next with them.

Decent (SPOILERS)

I personally enjoy YA books even though, I'm 24, it's adorable how some of the characters act and I get a good laugh.

It's a pretty good book. It follows two different point of views.

The first, and the character that the story focuses the most on is Sam. An average looking, socially awkward 13 year old boy who is struggling with not having a father, a mother that has to work double shifts to keep their home, and a 15 year old jerk sister.

A good book for young readers

I decided to read this book for nostalgic reasons. I read this book and the 3rd book in the series in middle school, but it was out of print so I could never complete the series. I still enjoy the story, very heartwarming and a good message of friendship, teamwork, and perseverance. It's especially a good read for young women because the story features strong female characters and focuses on a young woman trying to save her best friend instead of the usual romantic storyline. The only thing I wasn't super keen on was the narrator. She wasn't terrible, but I think sometimes it was hard to tell which characters were talking and there were awkward pauses in the middle of paragraphs.

A really good book!

I loved this book, even though I wanted her to hook up with Kona. I loved the way miss/Mrs. Deebs created the book, she's really good at the way she phrases the words just right. I also would of wished for less cursing, but who's perfect, plus I'm miss goody too shoes anyway. Over all really good book!

Not As Great As The First

This was what I was hoping for; a quick and easy read. However, I had problems with it. Mostly, the fact that they have just been chased by man eating spiders, and none of them seems to be even slightly tramautized at all. Half of the story is them cracking jokes (even when they find prints in the sand belonging to a predator who could totally kill them. They think it is a giant bird, so they joke about getting Colonel Sanders....WHAT!!! If I had giant, man-eating bird tracks in my backyard, Colonel Sanders WOULD NOT be the first thing on my mind, I can tell you that.) and fighting over who gets to date Casey. Yes. You read that right...pssh, forget about that we're on a uber-freaky island and there are MAN EATING SPIDERS and DINOSOARS...I wuv you, Casey!!!!!....no.

I like how the author writes, but I don't like how she caved in to the love triangle craze. The book would be sooooooooooooooooooo much better without it. I usually don't get annoyed by love triangles, but this book is not the right setting for one at all.

I'll be continuing the series for now, because I bught the first five books for free. I don't know if I would have continued otherwise, though.ï¿

Trapped in the Hollow Earth Anthology

Trapped in the Hollow Earth Anthology by Chrissy Peebles

I throughly enjoyed this anthology. It was fun and had many thrilling moments as well as a lot of humorous moments.

I do think though, that this series would be most enjoyed by preteens and young teens. I think that it would be enjoyed by all ages, but it's not a young adult book.

The antics of Mike were a little much for me, even though he did remind me of one of my friends when I was in high school.

There is no sex in this series, which is very fitting for a younger audience. It was touching that Casey had her first kiss there.

I really enjoyed all the different animals and the wonderful descriptions of their surroundings. Ms. Peebles did a fantastic job of making me feel as if I was there.

There were a few minor grammar issues in Books 3 & 4, however they didn't interfere in the story at all.

I recommend this anthology for all ages and I will read it again sometime.

Strange animals

Dread begins right where you finish. So the strangeness continues...sand that glitters like diamonds, a meadow so well described I imagined The Wizard of Oz and fairy dust. The author's description of the creatures that the 3 best friends encounter made television shows from my childhood come to life. I am enjoying this parallel universe or dream or prehistoric era that we visited and am anxious to find out who lives in glass houses.

Loving this series

How cool would it be to walk amongst prehistoric animals? As long as I knew I was safe I think it would be pretty awesome.That's what the teens have found on this island they are trapped on.

Great book. Looking forward to the next

Interesting take on the new beginnings of a dystopian society. I like how the focus of their society had remained on preventing the problems of their past, (our present), through items discovered in the ice; no matter how skewed their perception is on the matter. A good read with some clever twists throughout. I only wish there were more to the story leading to the demise of the first character.

Good at first...lost it's punch.

It started out pretty good with a rather new and unique theme of a "brave new world" after another "healing" of the earth with the culprit for all of earths ills having been the "Apple Computer",And it remained fairly interesting up to the point the "relic" was found and thenit went all to pieces. Couldn't wait to finish it just to be able to stop reading it. The absolute ending made no sense at all. I am telling readers you are taking your chances with this one.

For those who enjoy fantasy and dystopian!

RELIC is compared to Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games. While I have read Game of Thrones, I could definitely see how it is compared to The Hunger Games. The days of technology, also known as the PreHealing times, as long gone and the reader is transported to a world where the chief Archon rules for 10 years and then a Testing is held to select the next. While reading, you will come across a different vocabulary, but not one that is difficult to follow. It is during a time where women are Maidens and not expected to compete, but after Evaâs twin brother dies before the next Testing, Eva has a reason to enter and compete in his place.

She prepares just like the others, granted not with the same amount of time, but being the only female to compete in the Testing for the first time in years, she proves herself to be strong and just as capable of overcoming the grueling Testing.

RELIC combines elements of survival with that of a dystopian. Itâs an interesting read that keeps you engrossed in the story every step of the way. As the story goes on, Eva begins to realize that the world in which she lives may not be all she thought it to be. Eve is a heroine to admire. She demonstrates strength, courage, and determination throughout the book. And of course, there is a love triangle between Eva, Jasper, and Lukas, but it doesnât take over the story and could almost be described as a side story. I like that it doesnât take away from the action and adventure that the Testing contains.

As the first book in The Books of Eva series, RELIC sets up an interesting story and one that I am curious to read more about.

The children discover a magical book that transports them to a magical world full of pirates and princesses and fantastical exploits and free from the regular normal responsibilities that drive kids batty, like homework, siblings, and chores.

Weak entry to an otherwise amazing world

I love the Wren books and have for decades. All the Lhin books to date are great too, but this book is not an enjoyable read, doesn't add to the "world," and is surprisingly unfinished.

I finished it because I tend to finish books and feeling I owed a debt to Sherwood Smith for all the great books, but I can't fairly recommend this book.

Finding your compass in a world of adventure.

This is a great read for young teens as well as pleasant read for older folks. It is an excellent tale about taking responsibility for your actions and growing in maturity. Al this without being preachy or strident. This is a definite five stars for younger readers.

DVD extras of the Crown Duel world

These stories are like delicious bonus tracks in the Crown Duel album. Each of them stands alone pretty well, but they also enhance the texture and awesomeness of the main story.

Beauty is about growing up and not being what you are expected to be, which is a message I can always get behind.

Court Ship is awesome. I thought it was adroitly handled as a story of lost-and-found love. The foreign princess does not come off well, but not as badly as she might have. I loved that Granny Risa is so smart about taking your chances when you have them, and not talking yourself out of something that might be good.

Read if: You have loved other Sherwood Smith stories, you like a glimpse into the world.

Skip if: You are looking for instant chemistry and happily-ever-after for sure.

Wonderful snapshot of Remalna's Future

I really enjoyed these stories for the followup of events that occurred twenty years prior in Crown Duel and Court Duel. (Amazon has both available in one volume entitled "Crown Duel".) I wish for a longer visit to Remalna, Danric, Mel, Savona, etc. This is a nice way to see a snapshot of how things have gone and some of what the beloved characters lived through. It's good writing. The stories can stand alone, but much of the meaning is lost without reading Crown Duel. It might be interesting to read how everything ends, as these stories illustrate, and then go back and read how they began. A Stranger to Command (Danric's story) is a must. I don't know what order to recommend reading these in because each will influence understanding and perspective so much!

I wish Elestra's story didn't end!

I was IN LOVE with Sherwood's story 'Beauty', particularly. I love the world of Remalna and I especially loved that she reintroduced her character, Flauvic (from her previous novel 'Court Duel'). Flauvic has always held a special place in my heart--as one of my favorite, and handsome, villians. It was nice to witness a more 'human' side to Flauvic's character. I only wished, that I could have read more about Elestra's and Flauvic's story. It went unfinished. Elestra is a beautiful girl, who doesn't think she's beautiful; few bother to appreciate her, and so she goes on with life thinking she is 'ugly'. I loved her sense of humor and strong spirit.
