I picked up Kingdom of Little wounds because it had made several "best of" lists and won a Printz Honour this year. I had been wary of this title because opinions on this title have been mixed, and I finish the book finding my opinions on the title are mixed as well.

The writing throughout this book is wonderful. However, the subject matter is harsh. Many of the characters are sick or diseased in some way and the author describes lesions and medical procedures in detail. There's also a rather graphic rape scene. Furthermore, the first three quarters of the book don't seem to be really going anywhere. The main characters have misfortune after misfortune piled onto them and we hear a lot about court intrigues but there doesn't seem to be an arc to the narrative. Then the book rallies in its last quarter with the main characters working together to save themselves and the book becomes vastly more interesting and entertaining. I spent the first 75% of the book wondering why I was listening to this and the last 25% of the book not wanting to put it down.

I'm not a fan of this narrator. I've listened to one title by her previously and I find her heroines a little too flimsy and breathy. You get used to it after a while, but it's jarring at first.

There are going to be people who love this book, but I think that there will be more who don't manage to stick around for the finale.

I like the story of Clovermead. She's a clever girl with a hidden background. As she finds out more about herself, she finds more trouble, but she keeps doing her best. Good story.

Good Book, Bad Narration

This is one of those tragic situations wherein the Narration ruined a truly good book.

Yes, it is probably a YA tale, but the writing is beautiful, the characters likable, and premise interesting. And the reader is not up to any of it. What I cannot understand is why they went with the same reader for the entire series?

I listened to the sample, and admittedly it wasn't good, but I had read the book, and I thought her voice might be good for at least Clovermead. How disappointing it turned out to be.

You might want to get the printed version of this series. I found it entertaining and worth rereading. I wish someone would re-do the audio version.

WHAT A WONDERFUL SURPRISE AND LUCKY FIND THIS ONE WAS.

I was substituting at a local school and having a very, very slow day. I found this book lying on a shelf in the teacher's room and for lack of anything better to do, I started reading. My goodness what a lucky find this one was! I had no idea what the story was about when I started but must admit that before three pages were read I was completely hooked.

I note that this work is targeted for the teen and preteen crowd which is quite misleading. Yes, it is perfectly appropriate for this particular age but were I the publisher I probably would have extended the reading age level to at least 102. This is a great example of what we are seeing more and more of...age crossover books.

Basically this is a story set in a world; a medieval world where magic, religion, myth, legend, and reality are rather mixed. The heroine of our story is a young girl who has a bent for adventure and deep down wants to be a warrior. The story is hung on the conflict between the benevolent goddess, Lady Moon and her nuns, and the supposedly evil good, Ursus, and his rather evil henchman Snuff, the chief priest. This is the story of a young girl caught up in a war she does not understand but who is THE key player in this conflict between good and evil. This is the kind of story that contains a spoiler in almost every chapter so it is rather difficult to cover plot.

The author conveyed Katie's story as believable and told a heartfelt enjoyable story. The complex character that was Katie acted like a real person with her traits would. She was so likable and caring.

So Good!

I really enjoyed the level of fear and awfulness of this book. Zombies are seething I turn to, when I get sapped out by all of the romance that I read. There is SOME romance in the Zombie Chronicles, but nothing sappy!

So, book 5, how to describe it without spoilers... Suffice it to say, the levels of terror this gang has suffered this far? Kindergarten, compared to this. Seriously, these people are super heroes to overcome so much adversity and survive! The voice actor did another STELLAR job with this one, conveying all of the tension the characters felt, in his signature voices! Love, love, love this series!!! Now, I wait for my kiddo to catch up, and we can start the next one. Awesome!

What an Experience

In mid-2013 I first saw the trailer for the movie Twelve Years a Slave and knew right away I wanted to see it. I've got to be honest I'd never heard of Solomon Northup nor his story. What I appreciated most about reading Twelve Years a Slave was it was the most honest telling of that time period I've ever read. The descriptions that Solomon had on being a slave, his masters, and his fellow slaves made you feel like you were back in the mid-1800's in the South,

What can I possibly say that hasn't already been said before. To me Twelve Years a Slave should be required reading for all students in America. It shows slavery through the eyes of a slave not something we have many first hand accounts of. I'm so glad I read Twelve Years a Slave and cannot wait to see the movie.

Hugh Quarshie performance -- strongly recommended

After seeing the movie, I wanted to read or hear the book and had to decide which of several versions to go with. So glad I selected the Hugh Quarshie audible.com performance. I can't imagine a better reading. It felt as though I was hearing it straight from Soloman Nothrup, including some of the pronunciation nuances.

Believing this understanding should be part of every American's education, I have read a number of very enlightening slave narratives/histories. I do agree with another reviewer who said that Northrup's story, because it is told from the perspective of a free as well as enslaved man, is special and builds a helpful bridge that a 21st century free person can relate to. Normally I wouldn't say this, but I do recommend seeing the movie before reading the book. In this particular case, it enhanced my ability to "see" what was happening.

Required reading

This book reads like a novel. The events depicted are raw and emotional. Just an inspiring effort written with con conviction. Maybe in the next life I can thank Solomon for this gift.

I might, if it had been a while, and a new book in the series came out.

Probably Val in this one, as she is the voice of reason, with the brothers.

What about Mikael Naramores performance did you like?

As always, his flawless and intense delivery was outstanding! I could really feel the tension in the zombie attack scenes. His character voices are distinct and consistent.

There were a few chuckles, but this was mostly pretty intense.

The action sequences are really prevalent in this "episode". You never know from one moment to the next, who will survive. It was really freaky:-)

gripped

I love these books..the fact the story evolves into gripping exciting stories...i feel like I'm really getting to know each individual character...and silently (depending were I am with my headphones on.) woop if my favourites live through the ever increasing gory zombie attacks..im excited to see were they end up , in the next book. these zombie books could go on and on..folowing different groups has they battle to find peace and normality in the world of the dead.

I'm finding the story line predictable, more upsetting is that book lengths are very small it feels like the story is always half done never with an ending then you have to purchase another 2 hour read to get to the next chapter.

Well Written, Poor Narration

I saw the reviews about the narration and tried it anyway. I'm glad I did, but if you have the choice to read it instead, do that.

The story is about John Ryan, Melissa Pierson, and long distance riding. It is also about Moto Guzzi. Be prepared for Julie Roundtree's mispronounciations if you choose to listen.

So annoying I couldn't listen for more than 20 min

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I listen to as many motorcycle travel books as I can. I love the topic and most books I've found on audible have been quite entertaining. This particular author misses the point for me. I prefer to hear about the actual experiences of the travel. Maybe she eventually gets to the point but she spends an annoying amount of time waxing poetic about what a "mile" is. I hardly ever write reviews, especially negative reviews, but I feel like I just had $13 taken from me with nothing in return.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Julie Roundtree?

I listen to a ton of audio books and I've begrudgingly listened to many with narrators that I find annoying but something about this persons voice I found particularly annoying. There's a kind of gravelly quality to it that just grated on me. Perhaps other people will not be bothered by the narration but for me it was a deal breaker. I suggest you listen to the sample first to make sure you can tolerate the narration.

Audible needs a return policy. I know they provide samples but sometimes it's hard to judge what a book is really like until you're 20 minutes into it.

reader needs to learn pronounciation.

Julie has not met a word or name she could not mis-pronounce. One name in paticular was pronounced at least 3 different ways. An overall well written book made less enjoyable by the reading.

Teen superhero but narrator bombs

This is your basic teen-age superhero who feels alone, fights evil, and makes friends. Very Buffy, but not as well written. Still, for what it is, many would find it enjoyable. I listened to the end, so it isn't that bad. Just stale and cliched and sometimes repetitive in language. But the narrator! She makes it so much worse than it had to be. Perhaps I should blame the producer or director. But how many times does someone have to mispronounce a word until someone yells, "Cut!" From ingenue to progress to familiarity, and more and more, this person doesn't know how to pronounce a good many words, and no one stopped her from mispronouncing them. It became a game to write it down when a new word was wrong. I hit about a dozen words. I've listened to hundreds of audiobooks; I know that a stumble or a mispronounce can happen. But this is truly excessive and distracting. Also, she lacks in emotional range. I know she's a working narrator, with 4 books on Audible at the time of this writing, but I will avoid any book Mae Middleton is narrating in the future. Just to give the book a fair chance.

2D Chalk Monsters - not remotely scary!

I disliked this book for three main reasons.

1. The chalk monsters are 2D and not easy to envisage as malicious or dangerous.

2. Every chapter started with notes that accompany a diagram that we could not see as this was an audio version. It was a mixture of confusing and annoying.

3. The characters were very shallow and the ending was terrible.

The narrator did a passable job with the text he had and this made the book slightly easier to endure. I would not reccomend this as an interesting read.

Pretty damn cool

I love Sandersons books, pretty much every one. I wasn't sure if getting into a Young Adult one like this was a good idea, but it didn't disappoint!

Like all of Sandersons works, this had a completely new and well thought out world and magic system, interesting characters and epic twists that get you stuck!

It's not the best Sanderson book after works like the way of kings and mistborn, but it's definitely worth a listen!

Not sure about this one.

This book is a little odd story wise. Chalk drawing fighting I'm not sure what to make of it. Well written and a good story but a bit of a stretch concept wise.

Great series a must read/listen

I really enjoyed this book. It starts in a dystopian future where most of the human population is dead because of a disease that was let out by the partials which were made by humans to defeat a war, they look and act like humans.

The human race that is left over have come together in NY and are trying to find the cure for the disease. Most of the woman are constantly pregnant because they are trying to carry on the human race, but their babies die instantly from the disease.

Kira is the main character she is a doctor and is trying to find the cure however she goes one step further and because of this step things start to get very interesting.

It is a great read, its got action, it is funny, its smart, thrilling and it gets you thinking about what you would do in certain situations.

Kira is a great main character she has her faults which makes her human i don't like it when the lead is perfect.

A Fantastic YA Series!

This is the first book in the Partials Sequence series. I loved it!

Kira is a sixteen year old girl living in a post apocalyptic Long Island, along with the few remaining humans after a biochemical war. I liked this character a lot. She has a lot of compassion, bravery and determination. However, she finds out a secret that will change her life forever.

I was recommended this book by Amazon, since I am a fan of dystopian YA. I decided to give this book a try, and downloaded an audio book copy to listen to whilst doing chores. I loved the story so much, I also purchased a Kindle copy to read.

Narrated by Julia Whelan, the story is a fantastic post-apocalyptic dystopian novel full of twists and turns. Kira is a girl facing an insurmountable challenge (capturing a Partial and trying to find the cure for RM). However, she has a host of friends that go with her on her journey. The story is told through Kira's eyes, and the reader goes through the ups and downs of being a teenager - the angst and the frustration of being old enough to work and have children, but not exactly treated as an adult either. The characters were quite interesting, but Samm was an enigma. Yes, he's a Partial, but I was dying to know what he thought of things. It would have been nice to have some of the latter part of the story from his point of view. However, that wasn't to be.
