Fun Story, not great telling

What made the experience of listening to The Nex the most enjoyable?

This was a really fun story. Renee Chambliss was great.

What aspect of Renee Chamblisss performance would you have changed?

Her performance was great. Unfortunately several other voices were added. Only a very few fit the characters they portrayed. The others weren't very good. If it had just been Renee Chambliss it would have been 5 stars all the way. She should have been allowed to do all the voices.

Great story

Loved this story. If I had to compare it to something it would be the Wizard of Oz. It has a little of everything including a happy ending. The voices of characters were all well done and suited their character. If you listen to fantasy or sci-fi podcasts then you will recognize most of these experienced readers. This is a light, quick listen. Would definitely get the next one if they produce one. Good job guys!!

YA Time Travel + Ghost Story

I have been listening to a few audiobooks lately that are YA time travel, and when I got an opportunity to listen and review this one, I took it. The name was charming, so it intrigued me from the get-go.

Heres what you get:

*Time travel, of course! One of the things I liked about the use of time travel here is how the heroine reacts to it. Because she lives in a place with lots of history, she frequently time travels. Its not something she can control, and shed rather not do it. All the same, its just something that happens to her, almost a mundane inconvenience. It seems different than many of the other time travel stories Ive read.

*A fast story with almost insta-love. Considering this is a novella, and a short one even among already short things, thats somewhat understandable, though it still took me by surprise.

*Tie-in with a well-known ghost story from Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. I confess that I didnt know of the story before the novella, but it presents itself quite nicely.

*A teenager who acts like a teenager. She has trouble in some classes in school, goes to parties and does things she maybe shouldnt, has a clique of friends including some she likes more than others, and she is a cheerleader with an athlete boyfriend. In some ways, shes very typical except for the time travel.

Though a short novella, you get as full of a character as you can expect, she does go through a journey of transformation, and there is a happy ending. If any of that interests you, you will probably enjoy this.

NARRATION

Because I got a copy of this story from the narrator, I have to mention her performance. The story is told from First Person POV, and the narrator has a voice that totally works for the 17 year old lead character. She is believable as both Lauren and as John, the love interest. She sounds good doing all of it, and I would be happy to listen to her other performances on YA material.

PRODUCTION

There are two prominent spots in the audio where there are repeats of text and dead silence as it is rerecorded. The sound of it reminds me of the clicking sound that would happen when recording things onto cassettes. I realize both the ebook and the audiobook were indie productions, but I am truly surprised those made it into the final product. Even if money is tight, there are free, open source editing tools that can take care of these issues.

Amazing twist on the Cinderella story

I love fairy tale retellings and Barrett's twist on Cinderella is amazing! I haven't read one from the stepsister's POV before and when I stumbled upon this story, I decided to check it out. I'm so glad I did!

Without giving away too much of the plot, I can say that I loved the main character, Jane, who works so hard to keep her mother and sister (and, later, her stepfather and stepsister) from starving--they may live in a grand house, but it's falling down around their ears and there's little food to be had. Despite all the hardships they face, Jane keeps fighting to make things work out.

And work out things do, though not the way you might expect...

The story is a light read, easy to inhale in an afternoon with a cup (or three) of tea. I highly recommend it to lovers of Cinderella retellings and fairy tales in general.

Tremendous story of finding love where you least expect it

Jane the step sister resents Ella who won't help with the chores as they are almost broke. Ella calls her step sisters ugly because they're so dirty from working. They dislike each other intensely. It begins to change as they begin to starve and freeze. They need each other and grow closer and Ella starts to come out of her grief induced by her father's death. Then the impoverished prince comes and he wants to marry Ella and Ella has a decision to make. Will she choose the prince or her impoverished family who need her help? A story of what is important in your life. Being a princess or being a sister? This is a beautiful story filled with twists and turns and told so beautifully that you'll want to read it again. I at first hated Ella but then I loved her. I at first found Jane and Maude to be cold and indifferent but at the end they showed how much they could love.

Wonderful read!

I felt the girls' pains and joys, sadnesses and excitements. Such a wonderful reimagining of a beloved classic! All of the pieces of the Cinderella story we know were there, but when told from another perspective each element got a new, satisfying meaning. Such a fun read!

I loved this story. It was interesting and sweet. Near the end I started to cry a bit. I also cried the first time she visited the cabin.

Horrible Characterization

Why lie, I thought this book would be interesting, instead the characters have shallow motivations. The main character is of course dually gifted with magic and weaponry and has the love of two male characters (at least, supposedly). She is also meant to be a "warrior". In truth, she is the least likable "action girl" I've ever met: whiny, self-centered, attracted to jerkish men, and prone to oversimplification of things. Much like the author, who does this with absolutely everything.

In my book, if a teenage warrior girl is to be taken seriously, she could stop thinking about her love interests and her love life for a moment. Also, the villains were thinly developed, evil step(adopted)-sister, evil king, (SPOILER) evil ex...all with no motivation or pretext besides stopping the prowess of all that is good and noble in this world (those scumbags!). Trust me...to read this book takes no understanding of the human psyche, you know from somewhere in the beginning that these people are evil. No second guessing.

Maybe it's just because I like real characterization, with development and understanding behind them. But I didn't like this book and would never recommend it to anyone.

A decent fantasy with a healthy dose of romance

Two kingdoms fought a war and one lost - one of the fighters always does. Three kids from the loser side were taken to be raised in the royal court as a sign of peace between two nations. Lianne - the main heroine - is one of these kids. She grew up to be a handmaiden to the queen of victors. She was in love with a boy (another one of the trio) while all but ignoring the last taken boy who happened to be somewhat handicapped as a result of an accident.

Nothing out of the ordinary keeps happening until Lianne was about to celebrate her sixteenth birthday. At this point her whole world came crashing down, literally. She is forced to reevaluate her whole life, among other lesser things.

I read this book during the period of my infatuation with indie and self-published fantasy. This one was not too bad actually. Surely it is quite heavy on romance side. On the other hand this was done in such a way that I realized that the romance was taking too much plot time only when I finished reading.

As a fantasy romance (please do not mix this with paranormal romance which is a completely different beast) it does have quite a few of the standard tropes including heroine's angst. Once again it was not over the top and quite bearable.

It was still more or less standard fair until the BIG plot twist came up. This one was completely unexpected and took me by surprise.

Bait and Switch

I liked this story a lot. I liked the characters. It was action-packed and, more or less plausible. For it's genre, it had sufficient insight to make it fulfilling. The literary potential of its premise was reasonably well exploited. I was enjoying the hell of of this book.

Then it ended.

Huh? It wasn't literally in the middle of a paragraph but, it sure felt like it was the middle of a chapter. It didn't finish. It just ended. (With an audio book, you don't have tactile notification that you are coming to the last page. I literally looked to see if my player had gone wrong. Surprise! It's over.)

I'd have happily paid into a Kickstarter to support the authors to finish Book One. I was deeply annoyed to have spend hours only to not find out anything about how it turns out.

I enjoyed the narrator, Sarah Fine has a great imagination, and is a fantastic Author.

Astonishing

Twists & turns had me hooked the entire time! Simply amazing! It was fucking great!

Adventures and close friendships

Really enjoying this series. Lots of fun seeing the reactions to things and food they've never seen before. Fun getting to know each of the new called ones. Lots of adventure and a little bit of mystery at times.

Amazing Book!!!

This was a great book! It kept me captivated and I didn't want to put it down.

Iâm REALLY looking forward to the next book in the series.

The reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because there were a couple of typos in the book (missing punctuation and misspellings) and sometimes I wasn't sure who was around in certain situations.

This book series is completely amazing. I. Love. Remnants. Buy this book and the two following it, you won't be sorry. Remnants: Season of Wonder is very suspenseful, interesting, unpredictable, and inspiring. It left me feeling very eager for the next book in the series to come out (Season of Fire). I am planning on reading the whole series again, in which case I will write a more in depth review. But definitely buy this book :)

Well-written, deep, and fascinating!

Remnants is a breath of fresh air after so many run-of-the-mill dystopian novels I've read in the past few years. The Remnants are the hope of humanity against a dying and logic-dulled world. Lisa Bergren is brilliant at creating intense, fascinating storylines and REMNANTS is no different. There were times the world felt more like a fantasy world than a futuristic version of our world, but that wasn't a negative. It was simply evidence of Bergren's skillful hand at drawing a new, believable world. The characters, as are all of Bergren's, were well-drawn and deep. I loved the story from start to finish, and I'm anxiously awaiting the next novel.

Great book

Love the new concept

Loved it..... New concept for any of the vamp books I've read or listened to. I'm falling in love with the characters. My biggest wish is that the books were either longer or there wasn't so much time in between books. I love almost all of H.M. Wards series's but its like she drags them out into really small portions at a time especially the arrangement series, she's really dragging that one out. Its a great series also but I've gotten really frustrated with the small portions and then the waiting. Anyway Vampire Apocalypse is great but no telling how long it'll take for each new book.

Reader had one voice for all

Reader used the same voice for each character and for every emotion - silly little girl. The mother's sounded like silly little brain dead girls no matter what hardships they experienced. The sisters sounded like silly little brain dead girls, even when sad and rejected. The boys sounded like silly little brain dead girls through the whole book. It made the book sound silly and brain dead, and written by a little girl, for silly little brain dead girls. The idea of the book was cute. The writting left a lot to be desired. A better reader might have salvaged it, but instead, took away the last possible redeemable quality. I gave two stars for performance because the little girl who was the reader successfully pronounced all the words, and read at a seventh grade level. I'm assuming she's still in middle school. Kudos sweetheart.

Great Premise for a Novel

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Princess Sisters?

Honestly, I loved the prologue. It just completely set the tone for everything that follows.

What does Ashlyn Kindberg bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

She is the perfect voice to read this story. Very energetic and engaging!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Not your average princesses

Any additional comments?

I love the little details, like when teachers take attendance at school and the girls are called by last name, first name so that it comes out as "Princess, Snow White." Or how Snow White doesn't eat apples and Ariel is terrified of water. Cute story for young readers.

Cute Book with a Great Premise

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I really loved the idea of this book. I will say that it was hard to get into at first, but after the first few chapters it picked up and was really entertaining. I loved the voice/reader (Ashlyn Kindberg) and thought she did a great job keeping me straight with all the switches in point of view. I would definitely read a sequel.

The princess cousins overcoming their hangups and standing up to a bully.

Great book for ages 10+

If you could sum up The Finisher in three words, what would they be?

This a wild mixture of Fantasy, science fiction and myth.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I was surprised by the plot I would have expected an action packed adventure instead it was more of a dystopian type novel. One thing I found inconsistent was the use of made up names mixed in with real but once you get used to it it's ok. If you listen to this along with reading the book you may find some of the swear words used are different and a few extra words are added on occasion during discussions between characters, not sure why the differerences usually it's a difference between US and UK English but this didn't seem to be the case.

I would of liked less swear words and while he tends to used the same ones throughout I do think its excessive. If the reader is younger than 10 you may want to check the use of words to ensure its suitable.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The narrator gives a good representation of the character that captures her personality and so you feel sad when the character feels sad. She also makes a great attempt at distinguishing the voices of the other characters.

repetitive and meandering

What disappointed you about The Finisher?

The style of writing was laborious. The writer went over and over almost every point to the point of distraction.

What was most disappointing about David Baldaccis story?

The story lacked any real pace and having read many different books by the same author (I did buy this book knowing it wasn't his usual genre) I wonder whether his style of writing had changed and he was aiming for a younger audience.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator tried hard but this only detracted from the story, in my opinion, making the character whiny.

You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Sorry, none that I can think of other than maybe it will appeal to a younger reader.

Any additional comments?

I went in open eyed and having read many of David Baldacci's books, I knew that this was entirely different genre. I would say that, based on this, that if you have read any of this author's previous books don't expect this one to be anything like as good.

stick to crime .....not Baldacci at his finest

Fierce and passionate leaps

Hard to put down. I actually read all of Exodus with about 50 pages still to read in Unorthodox. I wanted to find out how her life evolved after leaving her Jewish community. With prose sometimes quick and light, sometimes ponderous and meditative, there is a not moment in her narratives (both of them) that I don't appreciate and revel in her courage, intelligence, and will to live fiercely, with passion, sometimes alone and always believing that anything and everything is possible. I finished both her memoirs wanting more and hoping that this young writer will continue to write and produce literature well into the her future.

Memoir draws you in

I was quite drawn in to Deborah's second memoir. I'm still astonished that someone so young would undertake a memoir, but she truly has a lot to say. I was touched by her pilgrimage through Europe as well as a little concerned, in a motherly way about her personal relationships with men while not quite explaining how she is funding her adventures or who is caring for her son.

I would love to see her visit Israel in another pilgrimage.

Not interested in her sex life.

I wasn't so interested in her sex life. I was really curious to know how she managed to make a life for herself. How she went from student to writer How she made a living. How she managed her family. I was more interested in who she became than who she slept with.
