Sarah Fine at her best

Of Dreams and Rust is the second part of Sarah Fine marvelous fantasy duology. Fine is an author of considerable experience and strength, whos proven herself more than capable of executing even the most elaborate plots while paying much attention to the psychological development of her characters. With a PhD in psychology and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Brown University, Fine puts her extensive knowledge to good use. Her characters are works of art in their own right, with layer upon layer of true personalities and consistencies in their behaviors.

Even such strong characters dont outshine her plots by much. Of Dreams and Rust brings a rush of excitement in each chapter, a breathless anticipation of things to come. Wen is in constant danger, unsure of her enemies and even more unsure of her friends. She goes through such struggles in this book, challenges much larger than before, and yet she remains strong and brave the entire time.

Wen is truly a heroine one can admire. Although not demonstrative at the best of times, she is still marvelously aware of her emotions and heart. She approaches everything with such calmness and strength and her loyalty and capacity for forgiveness are astounding.

Compared to the previous book, Of Dreams and Rust is much less claustrophobic, both in its setting and the characters. We are introduced to so many places and people and new experiences are offered on every turn. Even though we felt like we knew are main characters, Fine manages to present them all in a new light, revealing slowly the complexities of their personalities and their individual strengths and weaknesses.

As a linguist, I was very intrigued by the Noor language and Fines efforts in creating it consistently. The geek in me rejoiced with each new word and the very fact that she paid attention to such details was enough to make me deliriously happy. But thats nothing new when it comes to Sarah Fine. She is almost unparalleled in her attention to detail and her vivid descriptions. Luckily, shes also very productive and she doesnt make us wait very long between books. What could be better than that?

I am so glad that authors like Lorilyn Robert write about demons, the occult, physic reading and differing sources of power. Seventh Dimension is definitely edgy and creative, including a ventriloquist, mind reader, a person who hears animals talk and a clairvoyant. There are lots of animals including, a donkey, rabbit, horses and several crows. You never know what is going to come next.

Ms. Roberts peels back and looks into the spirit realm, showcasing the battle oflifegood and evil. And, shows it realistically with characters making wrong decisions and learning along the way. I enjoyed her merge of fantasy and Israeli history.

My 15 year old and I listened to this in audio. He liked it and hadnt listened to this genre much at all.

I believe writing from one persons view is more challenging. Bring us more books Ms. Roberts. :) Having never read her before, both of us agreed it starts out a bit confusing but then settled into a good pace.

Brad McDowells audio voices are good. I heard a digital noise in the background periodically, but it didn't take from the story.

Degas got me into this..

The only reason I picked this book was because Rupert Degas narrated it. After the name of the wind I think he could read me an ironing instruction manual and I would hang on every lilt and tone of voice. The book started with a bang and did not disappoint, enjoyed the characterisation and the story gripped me. Rupert Degas's performance again was superb. Looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

A great concept

I loved the premise of this book and the middle of the story really heated things up and made it hard to put down. The truth is I'm likely to give the author another shot on the sequel if there is one, because the characters ultimately captured me and I'm curious to know what happens to them. But I have to be honest, I feel like this book may have been released before it was fully ready. This feedback is here only in the hopes that it could help a second book succeed. I know what a labor of love writing is and I don't wish to discourage anyone who succeeded in publishing a book with a great concept and a lot of great scenes.

The key issues I had:

1) The beginning was very difficult to get into, despite my love for the concept. Too many characters were introduced far too quickly, which bogged things down unnecessarily and almost made me give up on the book. Lengthy descriptions of their physical appearances felt like all I remember of the first few chapters. Getting to know just a few of the most meaningful characters first would be a nicer introduction to the world.

2) Unfortunately, of the 10 or so characters, only a few played a critical role in the story. I felt a little frustrated that I spent mental energy on them.

3) The main character is a rebellious teen who does not want to become a jinn. Even so, it is hard to believe she wouldn't crack open a family book full of secrets out of sheer curiosity. We are told over and over how scarred she is from a traumatic childhood experience, but most of her redeemable qualities are skills she inherited vs who she inherently is as a person. Finding ways to make her seem more sympathetic would be good.

4) Almost nothing in the story is tied up! There is no real climax and no real satisfaction for the time I put into this book. I felt a bit cheated, as though this was a planned series cut off at a critical point to make me buy the next. After paying $9.99 for a download (higher than most in this genre) We don't even get resolution of a few critical issues between Azra, a close friend, her mother and the men in Azra's life.

I read this book in only 6 days. I barely placed it down because of work or school. It's the sort of book that keeps you on the edge with just a hint of romance. Kind of like Hunger Games, Tigers Curse or Eon.

Interesting but not my favourite

I honestly don't know how to rate this book. It felt like three different books all stitched together, some parts better than others.

The premise is great, the world-building awesome, the future that was mostly realistic and the action believable - that was all the good stuff!

Structurally this book irritated me. I just wanted to stick with Jenna but in the beginning I kept getting news articles or reports or letters or random ACID agent kommspeak - it didn't even seem necessary to the story since sticking with Jenna would've made it just as nail-biting, if not more so.

The blurb really is fantastic but it makes it sound like the whole book is about this girl in an all-male prison. I was really looking forward to a story that challenged gender roles and that showed an incredibly strong female protagonist. Nope. Honestly, if I'd known about the arranged marriage aspect of this story and the government legislation forbidding same-sex relationships, I might not have read this. Those two themes individually rub me up the wrong way - in the same book? Grrrrrrr!

I wasn't a fan of the book for the majority of the story and really just wanted to get back to Jenna. Finally, we did and the last 15% of this novel was fantastic, leaving just enough room for a sequel without it being too cliff-hangerish. I'm glad I didn't put this on the DNF pile because those last few action scenes are awesome.

exciting young teen unusual magic YA

Surprisingly fun and smart YA paranormal fiction. I loved the heroine: Holly, a smart girl with a couple of friends and reputation for being an oddball, but who isn't a loner, miserable, completely self-doubting, or obsessed with love. She's in a bad spot because her mother has been incapacitated by an encounter or attack in the spiritual realm, so she's been doing the best she can - which admittedly, is scamming a few rich kids at school into paying her to exterminate spirits that she and her friend conjured up. Did I mention that mother and daughter are both shamans, who work to move spirits on to the spirit realm when they are stuck in the earthly one? It's a cool and unusual magical power in YA fiction, and the author provides a good, understandable magic system with rules that are obeyed.

As an adult reader, I appreciated the lack of focus on romance (I mean there is a romance, but there is no love triangle and the heroine doesn't agonize and make stupid decisions in front of her love interest, who is in fact, a nice guy and not a villain. I loved that Holly had at least one steadfast friend who stays by her side. I loved that both of them grew as characters and in maturity as they faced the dangers. The spirits themselves were actually scary, and not in a gory way but in a surprisingly plausible way.

The writing wasn't *quite* Whedon-esque, but it was snappy and fun and well-plotted. There were lessons learned. There were big bad guys and little bad guys. There were mistakes made and lessons learned. There were humorous lines, and the teenagers were, for the most part, believable. It scratched my Buffy itch. The story is aimed at younger, more innocent teens - rated PG.

I listened to this in audiobook format, and Warner Munroe did a decent job.

4.5 stars, but I rounded up

I quite enjoyed this book. The action took quite a while to go anywhere though, almost to the end. I took a half star off for that. The characters are interesting, but not fully fleshed out in the first book. I won't bore you with a plot summary as I know other reviewers are fond of doing that. If you like books in this genre, I say you should give this one a shot because I don't think you'll be disappointed, but don't expect a fast paced adventure store to start with in this first book. I have a feeling the series will "get there" eventually, but this book is quite a foundation piece for the series setting everything up so that you know what is going on with the people and places and actions. My only real problem with this book is that there are no chapter demarcations. Chapter demarcations make it so much easier to see how close you are to the end of a chapter or to find a stopping place when you need to do so. I can't wait to read the next one.

A great read from, apparently, a very talented author.

It's rare for me to give any book a 5 star rating. I'm no "young" adult, except at heart, but I really enjoyed this book. I haven't yet searched for book 2, as I have quite a backlog of reading but would very much like to find out what happens next.

This book is well written and moves along at a good pace. I'd recommend this to "young" adults of any age!

A new type of story

This is a fun read. Audie is a real person. The whole trying to get in to the college she thinks is the best is real life. I could go on and on about her life, you laugh or cry at the way she thinks through things. Then when she meets Halli and everything changes. Audie's ordinary life is no more. How many dream that our ordinary lives would change? Again her reaction to her new life is so real. What would you do? If you are looking for a new type of story read this book and then the whole series.

great book

Really great book, transports you to another place.

LOVED the storyline

This book was in my son's schoolbag, I took it and read it almost a year ago, and just getting around to writing a LONG overdue review... this book took my breath away, I went the next day to get the 2nd book.... my library didn't have 3 or 4, dammit.... LOVED the storyline, the characters and if this were able to really happen wow what a world this would be!!!!

Captivating world, beautiful style

This book is a textbook example of what I love most about the children's genres: a strong lead, incredible fantasy world, an imaginative plot, absolutely gorgeous prose, and a lingering depth to the story that I can take away with me and mull over later. I can't think of a single negative. I was completely captivated by this one.

Lia has a botanical gift. She knows the ancient names, ancient uses, and ancient lore for every plant. Unfortunately, the king has outlawed such practices as well as entry into the mystical lands of Brume that lie hidden behind the curtain of mist. But when Lia's father and several others contract an unknown sickness, she and her cousin must journey into the unknown land to find the cure. There Lia learns secrets of her family's past, gains abilities she never would have imagined, and encounters dangers beyond her worst nightmare.

I loved that Lia's ability to wield magic stems from ancient herb lore. She's a fantastic lead, strong, brave, and heedless of the disapproval others might have for her. Instead, her focus lies on the job she must do. Her cousin, Wynn, isn't quite as developed, but he's loyal and brave and makes a necessary accompaniment to Lia on her travels. And their path takes some wildly unforeseen turns. Brume is an incredible, well thought out world with mysterious characters at every turn.

And now to share some examples of Ms. Mercer's beautiful writing style:
