Tausendsassa Frank Schätzing reicht es nicht, einen Bestseller nach dem anderen zu veröffentlichen. Die Hörbuchfassung für seinen Krimi "Tod und Teufel" verantwortet er als Drehbuchautor und Komponist. Einige kleinere Rollen spricht er außerdem selbst.

Seinen wie gewohnt hervorragend recherchierten Roman "Tod und Teufel" siedelt Frank Schätzing im Köln des Jahres 1260 an. Wie bei einem solchen Setting im finstersten Mittelalter nicht anders zu erwarten, geht es deftig, spannend und äußerst unterhaltsam zu. Jacop der Fuchs beobachtet den Mord am Dombaumeister - leider bleibt der bauernschlaue Herumtreiber dabei nicht unentdeckt. Nun hat er Tod und Teufel auf den Fersen - und befindet sich inmitten einer ungeheuren politischen Intrige.

Richtig gelungen finden wir die Besetzung dieses fulminanten Hörspiels. Durch die hervorragenden Sprecher wie Gerd Köster, Anke Engelke, Mario Adorf und Cordula Stratmann - allesamt Kölner - entwickelt sich eine ganz besondere Dynamik. it was an incoherent abridgement - unbalanced. Long drawn out parts and then rushing through teh last 1/2 of the story in the last hour. To be fair, I do not like abridged versions and msised that when I ordered it, but it was terribly done in this case.

Any additional comments?

Especially annoying - having a 15th century narrator use words like "crap" and talk about contractions being 5 min apart - discredited the whole suspended disbelief.

A Better than Average Coming of Age Story

I am a long-time fan of Gail Godwin and although this isnt' one of her best books, I found it very enjoyable. The basic plot is a fairly familiar one-spunky young career girl gets started on her profession while dealing with love and ambition. However, what sets this book apart is the backdrop of Miami just after Castro came to power. The political issues related to the Cuban immigrants are woven into the story with a great deal of skill. They are not just an add-on --they fit into Emma Gant's new world. And the author did a great job describing Miami-I felt like I was there

Book was poor but narrator worse

I have never written a review before but I find that as disappointing as this book is as a novel, with cliches and shallow, silly characters, the narrator made it even worse. I have been listening to books on tape for years and this person is by far the worst I have ever heard. She makes a bad book considerably worse.

Maybe I missed the climax

Carrington Macduffie read performed this book with amazing characterization. I love when the reader differentiates the voices enough that I can tell who's talking without the tag line.

The story, however, never seems to quite coalesce. It contains some lovely vignettes and intriguing story lines that interweave but only by force and artificiality. Still, it was a pleasurable listen. I'll look for more performances by Macduffie.

Fantastic style, narration and genre

It's been a long time since I enjoyed a book so much. Although it's historical fiction, the narrative accounts of over 20 people are woven together very well to create a clear story of Tasmania's English settlement and Indigenous history. Humour is not forsaken, even in the tones and language of very Puritanical English settlers. The narration is superb, with a range of accents keeping the voices clear in the listener's mind.

Ruined by being abridged

If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I have both read and listened to an audio version of the full unabridged story. This is a clever and complex book with many interwoven threads. This aspect was totally undermined by this rather clumsy abridged version. I would not recommend this this book to anyone. Very disappointing.

abridged too far

Highly enjoyable, ripping yarn. I read the first 8 books of the Aubrey/Maturin series a few years ago and was looking forward to the audio version. Mostly I was not disappointed. Robert Hardy does an excellent job on the narration, with good salty accents and believable characterization.

My quibble is with the abridging, which left out some important (to my mind) stuff, eg the trapanning scene where Maturin cuts open the guy's head in front of the ship's company, a suspenseful and interesting scene in the original. There were also some abrupt scene changes, esp between the capture of the Surprise and the board of inquiry.

This was pretty good, but I wish it and the rest of the series were available unabridged.

Abridged

I would not have bought this book, had I realized it was abridged. Thus the story lost a lot of it's sense and continuity. However it was well read.

Absolutely first-rate!

I have long been a fan of this brilliant series and jumped at the chance to hear it read by the redoubtable Robert Hardy. Hardy brings the characters to life in a way that enhances my memories of the printed page and the only bittersweet disappointment involved was that he was reading from an abridged version. No, no, no! Read the whole thing! We are missing all the asides and digressive bits that admittedly add nothing to the plot but which constitute so much of the period charm of this fascinating ongoing tale. It is primarily the story of a deep and enduring friendship between two very unlike men, one the bluff and hearty Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy, lucky at sea but prone to every disaster on land, and the other the sardonic and secretive surgeon and natural philosopher Stephen Maturin with his mixed Catalan and Irish loyalties. They clash, they reconcile, they play music together, they watch out for one another's interests ... and then they clash again. The background to all this is the war at sea against the Empire of Napoleon and the action ranges from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and from there to the furthest oceans of the world. This is rivetting stuff and is punctuated by periods ashore where the sharp-witted Stephen proves himself more adroit than his naive and trusting companion.

Oh dear! Nothing to be done. With a sidelong glance at my perilous bank account I went out and bought the whole series and spent a week or so rather blissfully submerged in a bygone world so well recreated that you can actually feel yourself within it.

Disappointing

For a novel based on a true story of a pioneering woman pilot it does not touch enough on the experience of flying except for naming planes and pilots living at that time. It spends more time describing the mother/daughter relationship as well romantic ones but that could have been depicted in any other novel. A great read, with some unexpected turns! One that lingers with you!

Another great novel, not only in this series but in general! While the first part of this book is not as action packed as book 2 it adds more depth and interest to our story and the characters/relationships. A little over half way through however you are sure to encounter a pivotal point in the story and one that will cause pain and upheaval for our characters, and hopefully will bring a growth in faith. When tragedy strikes who do we look to? Do we trust in God, His love and goodness or do we become angry and bitter? As much as we think we can take care of ourselves and handle things we are desperately in need of The Lord. Will we allow pride and fear to rule us? These are issues that are faced in book 3.

This is one of those books that has you thinking about it long after you set it down or finish it. It lingers with you and excites you for the next book. If you are searching for a humorous and light read, in which life is idyllically perfect, then this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking for a novel filled with drama and surprises that leave you devouring the pages then pick this one up. I like that Heitzmann isn't afraid to risk offending some by taking some risk with her stories and doing the unexpected. Her characters, their love, struggles and ultimately their faith make her novels ones I could read over and over again. These stories and characters come to life, and take root in your heart and mind. I can't wait to read book 4!

Depressing.

This book will make you not want to become a Christian. Nothing but pain, suffering, mind battles, and assumptions. "In all thy getting, get an understanding." Why write and quote scriptures yet disregard the most obvious.

I was never inspired reading this book. It is sad, and depressing. Nothing good ever happens, only tragedy, after tragedy, after trouble, and that's not including the horrible thing she does to several of her characters. Poor guys life was full of turmoil and then............ Ridiculous!

I will not read another book from this series that started off so great! Too much sorrow. Some bad is good, but this book was way to much!

Also I loved Abby until this book. Her character was wonderful then she turns into a mean, vicious. black hearted and unreasonable person, and the writer justifies it all by saying she went through too much that turned her bitter. Couldn't stand her in this book.

This series continues to improve and inspire.

Abbie and Monte are happy, awaiting the birth of their first child when tragedy strikes. Just how much can this little family stand? Abbie forgets what she learned early in life about God and becomes a completely different person. The ranch must survive, but how, with all the past calamities and now typhoid fever? Follow the developement of certain characters as the author spellbinds the reader with unforeseen disasters and miracles, surprises and brings tears and laughter to the reader.

RESPECTED VETERAN REPORTER SAYS IT BEST!

The narration of this book is so much fun ... a different character from that character's perspective in different chapters. The highly respected news man, Jack Perkins, said the following about YOUR CALL! and I could not agree more. So, as MY review, I am typing his words to claim as my own, also:
