There, Johanna makes a living sewing her exquisite quilts and Jo-Beth discovers a special friend. Kind, thoughtful, and deep, Wesley Rutherford draws Jo-Beth like a magnet... and their attachment to one another becomes strong - strong enough to endure separation while Wes studies in Philadelphia. Strong enough to make their future together seem certain, until the Civil War forces a decision that places Wes at odds with friends and family. Can their love survive a war that will rend a nation in two?
Like the pieces of silk, velvet, and ribbon in one of her mother's quilts, the patchwork events of Jo-Beth's life will be knit together by God into a pattern of their own - one of sorrow, joy, and grace.

    The Pledge
The books story to me was interesting. But The Pledge arrived pretty damaged and took over 10 days to arrive. I was disappointed in the quality. I ordered another book from this series as well. It arrived a few days after ordering it and was in great shape. Why the difference I don't know but Iam disappointed.

    Publisher's Summary:
Young Gwenni Morgan has a gift. She can fly in her sleep. She's also fond of strawberry whip, detective stories, and asking difficult questions. When a neighbour mysteriously vanishes, she resolves to uncover the secret of his disappearance and return him to his children. She truthfully records what she sees and hears: but are her deductions correct? What is the real truth? And what will be the consequences for Gwenni, her family, and her community of finding it out?
Gwenni Morgan is an unforgettable creation, and this portrait of life in a small Welsh town on the brink of change in the 1950s is enthralling, moving, and utterly real. Mari Strachan's debut is a magical novel that will transport you to another time and place.
    Critic Reviews:
"The author's light touch keeps the story unfamiliar and surprising, while Gwenni's über-precocious narration revels in a love for language and reveals an unspoiled innocence about the world. It's small, quiet and nicely done." (Publishers Weekly)
"[A] beautifully realized debut. Strachan is especially good at infusing her material with a sense of magic that is rooted in ambiguity, and at capturing the sensibility of a small town where all lives are interconnected, for good or ill." (Booklist)

    Sheer Delight!
This book is an absolute gem! I am so happy I found it, and so sad to have finished it! Mari Strachan is one of the most talented wordsmiths I have ever encountered. Her attention to detail is stunning - she clearly has very vivid memories of what it was like to be 12-years-old. Gwenni Morgan is a delightful character, so very real, I believe she could fly, and I will miss her!
    Please write another book, Mari!
A wonderful, solid and entertaining read.
This is a solid four star read for me. Gwenni is twelve years old, lives in Wales and dreams of being a detective. She is more herself than most characters I have ever encountered in a book. She soars in her dreams at night, ( or does she? ) flying above the countrysid and seeing things she doesn't always want to see.
She lives with Magda her mam and her Tada ( dad) and older sister Bethan. I never did manage to warm up to Bethan, and by the end of the book, liked her even less.
Nearby, live her paternal grandmother Nain, and auntie Lol. They and Tada and good people, kind and loving and caring in the face of any and all obstacles. Twelve is a difficult age, and I remember it very well. Perhaps I I was so drawn to Gwenni, because I remember being twelve and playing "spy" with my best friend. I also remember it being the summer that we met some boys. Gwenni, though, has no time for that. She, Like myself in fact, was looking for companionship, friendship and someone to discover things with. And believe me, it is no wonder she dreamed of being a detective. A clever girl she is, and nothing gets past her, not once she thinks about it. This cleverness and a misstep by a teacher bring this story to a fine climax.
Well, that and the death that changed everything.
    Five Stars
    Great read
    Three Stars
    A readable story!
    Great read
I wouldn't often consider giving a book a top rating but Mari Strachan does this book beautifully. Her characters are really well expressed and developed and therefore very believable.

this is the first book I have listened to by Valerie wood and I listened to it every moment I could.
the story of mikey walking and hitching rides to and from London, with a working period of five years in London, was written and performed really well. the poverty of the time and the help people would give not having much more themselves came across.
    recommended.
    A very good listen!
A heartwarming story of a young lad and young lady, set in what must have been a very hard era, that blossom into 2 happy young lovers. A story depicting their long struggle to acheive there hearts ambitions. A predicatable ending but very well read by the narator Ann Dover. Once I began to listen it was hard to put down.

    westward dreams; where tomorrow waits
The book was in very good condition and I look forward to reading more of this series. Although I am in the middle of this book, I find it very captivating and enjoying it very much. Jane Pert is an amazing author and I would highly recommend her books. I am reading her Brides of Montclair series and can hardly put them down. Her style of writing is fantastic and really gives you history, romance and Christianity. She puts you right into that Era and makes you feel every emotion whether it be a laugh or something that will make you even cry. Every chapter flows beautifully and always has a great ending or and ending that makes you want to read another one. Her flow of these books are wonderful!!!! I highly recommend them and I can't wait to read other series as well.
    Mother's day gift
I bought these for my mom, she loves them.
an enjoyable tale of a young woman's adventures on the Oregon Trail.
This isn't so much a romance as it is a tale of a brave, if reluctant, pioneer woman.
Penny wants something more out of life than marriage. Besides, none of the men she has met in her small town in Missouri hold any interest for her. In fact, one of them, Jeremiah, is aggressive and pushy and she seeks to avoid him whenever she can.
When an enthusiastic missionary comes to town, Penny's brother, Brad, is all excited about going to the Western Territories. Brad's wife, Thea, who is Penny's best friend, is a timid woman but she adores her husband and will do everything to support him. Brad and Thea want Penny to come along to help out with their two year old daughter, Belinda. Also, Thea shares with Penny that she is pregnant but she doesn't want to tell Brad as he would delay their trip. Although Penny is reluctant to leave her beloved Grams, she is excited about the adventure ahead.
The author gives wonderful insight into the preparation and weeding out of belongings as they are limited in space and weight. The trail can be hard, lonely and frightening. Penny and Thea make friends with an older woman, Nelldean, and her grandson, Nate.

The continuing story of Arthur, the second in a trilogy that began with The Winter King. The novels bring Arthur and his world to vivid life.
Arthur is a man battling for his vision of the future in a brutal age, dragged down by suspicions and magics of the past, surrounded by intrigue, dependent on his skill at war and genius for leadership.
    Members Reviews:
    The Arthurian legend given substance
I had the trilogy as books and as tapes. This is the first time I have seen them as audio books to download and I have been looking for them for several years.
The three titles, The Winter King, The Enemy of God, and Excalibur, are my favourite and the best retelling of the legend of Arthur I have read or heard, filled with action and interesting facts about the era, real locations and a gritty realism. I loved them and will enjoy listening to them again.....and again..
    Great book
I normally choose unabridged titles but in this case I made an exception and I'm so glad I did! Tim Pigott-Smith's reading is brilliant; the rendintion of various accents and character deliniation are spot on. Bernard Cornwell creates a world that you want to believe in and peoples it with characters you can really care about or really hate depending on who we are taking about. This wonderful story is the second of the trillogy starting with the Winter King and ending with Excalibur. I would recomend you listen to them in order as you really do need to know the characters stories from the begining.
    Rip roaring stuff
Well written excellent characters, enjoying the twist on the legend very much.
Looking forward to the final book
outstanding from the master of this style writing,
What made the experience of listening to Enemy of God the most enjoyable?
Just a really great take on the whole
Arthur legend , cleverly crafted all that you would want from a book of this type. The story is really strong with all the characters very well written, you are there , and you want this to be the real story not just a myth. Get the whole series you will not be disappointed, then just enjoy, don't know why this was not made into a TV series rather then the up and coming Last kingdom , although that is also very good this has definitely got the edge on that series, the story is so well crafted battles, magic that may or not be magic, and really rich developed characters with a strong story line, so as you may now be aware I really liked it
Who was your favorite character and why?
Dervil as he is the main character and drives the whole story, you really warm to him he is brave,he takes risks,he's loyal and along with that he's kind
    !
Which character as performed by Tim Pigott-Smith was your favourite?
    Merlin
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The opening part with Remembering The Dead And The Battle At Lug Vale
    Any additional comments?
Please try this, its great in fact the whole series is outstanding, but should be listened to in the correct order winter king first
    Good story well read
Liked the story, it's well read. And it's another take on the Arthur legend which seems to grow with time!

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-27-10
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 20 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Just when her family should be arranging her marriage, Kathmiya Mahmoud, a young Marsh Arab maiden, is sent from her home in Iraq's idyllic countryside to the unfamiliar city of Basra, where she must survive on her paltry earnings as a servant. Her only asset - her exquisite beauty - brings more peril than peace. Worse, her mother appears to be keeping a secret about her own mysterious past, one that could threaten Kathmiya's destiny forever.
In this lost Iraq of the 1940s, a time of rich traditions and converging worlds, Kathmiya meets Shafiq, a Jewish boy whose brotherhood with his Muslim neighbor, Omar, proves that religion is no barrier to friendship. But in a world where loss of honor is punishable by death, the closeness that grows between Kathmiya and Shafiq becomes dangerous as a doomed love takes root. When British warplanes begin bombing Iraq and the country's long-simmering tensions explode, the power of an unbreakable boyhood bond and a transcendent love must overcome the deepening fractures of a collapsing society.
Set during the tumultuous years surrounding the Second World War, Sweet Dates in Basra is the redemptive story of two very different cultures, and a powerful reminder that no walls can confine the human spirit.
    Critic Reviews:
[T]he cultural perspective and setting are a nice break from the wartime norm, as is the unexpected ending. (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Couldn't finish it
Although well written and narrated - I couldn't finish it. I expected it to be more adult oriented - but I think it is better suited for an adolescent audience.
    Recommended
There was a lot in this novel - the situation of the Jewish community in Iraq in the 1940s, the struggles endured as a maid coming from a poor background in the Marshes to work in bustling Basra, and the problems of friendships between different cultures and between unmarried men and women.
There are two main charcters, Shafiq, a young Jewish-Iraqi, who starts to feel the effects of anti Jewish sentiment in Iraq as he reaches his teens, and Kathmiya, a beautiful young girl from the Marshes who should be entering into marriage at this age but finds herself shipped off to work as a maid in Basra.
Kathmiya can't understand why she is not getting married like her sister Fathima, and why her father seems to hate her so much. But she makes the best of her life in Basra and works hard.
There she is noticed by Shafiq, who is stunned by her beauty. In this society it would mean certain death for Kathmiya if her friendship with Shafiq were ever discovered and the relationship can have no future.
The other main relationship in the book is between Shafiq and his Muslim neighbour, Omar. Not only are the boys best friends, but the families help each other in numerous ways over the years in a society where such friendships are becoming increasingly problematic.
Jessica Jiji has never lived in Iraq but learned of this time in history from her father who left the country in 1947 as an 18 year old. HIs love for his homeland is reflected in her warm feelings towards this place and time.
