    Critic Reviews:
Leimbach masterfully conjures the hothouse atmosphere of foreign correspondents in Saigon in the late 1960s.... A solid addition to the literature of an endlessly reconsidered conflict. (Publishers Weekly)

The best novel I've read in years
Among the wonders of America's Civil War literature was Stephen Crane's "Red Badge of Courage." The author never saw a battle. I am stunned by how vividly Marti Leimbach has captured the horrific detail of combat and social disruption in Southeast Asia during the 1960's. One might conclude that at some point in her career she served with the Rangers in Vietnam, and the Army Nursing Corp., and managed to squeeze in a couple of years as a war correspondent, all the while carousing in Saigon bars and working as a hyper-observant sociologist and jungle ecologist. The research she put into "The Man from Saigon" is absolutely astonishing! Ms. Leimbach teaches creative writing at Oxford University, and her students are fortunate indeed to study with such a gifted author.
"The Man from Saigon" is the best novel I've read in years. From start to finish I couldn't set it down... and it is not a "quick read." I long ago lost interest in reliving the wars of Southeast Asia, and I'm not very attracted to love stories. I love outstanding writing, however, and I love this novel. The twists of plot, the realism, the complex characters, the attention to gritty detail, the frequent surprises of observation, the exploration of human emotions and behaviors, and above all the pure quality of craftsmanship, cover to cover. It is an adventure, a romance, a slice of histoty, a brilliant novel.
    Powerful!
This is book that I couldn't put down. It is about a puzzling love, survival, and the politics of the Vietnam War. The characters were well developed and very real though I was uncomfortable with one. The writing is straight forward, the descriptions believable. I had to take break from reading this every so often because it was so powerful. Thank you, Marti Leimbach!

    A compelling read
A compelling story of one woman's journey of capture, endurance and love in the Vietnam war. I was expecting a prisoner of war story but it wasn't that at all.
    Great book club read
This book opened up an amazing discussion when we selected it for our book club.

    The Arthurian legend given substance
I had the trilogy as books and as tapes. This is the first time I have seen them as audio books to download and I have been looking for them for several years.
The three titles, The Winter King, The Enemy of God, and Excalibur, are my favourite and the best retelling of the legend of Arthur I have read or heard, filled with action and interesting facts about the era, real locations and a gritty realism. I loved them and will enjoy listening to them again.....and again..

It is the year AD 62. The notorious Roman emperor Nero orders Marco Junio Vitalis, a seasoned military general, to assist him in a most peculiar legal proceeding. Vitalis interrogates an elderly Jewish fisherman named Peter, who many years earlier had been a close friend of a man known as Jesus - the same Jesus condemned to death in Jerusalem by Pontius Pilate.
Loyal to the emperor, Vitalis determines to do everything in his power to expose the truth around this strange new religious sect before it undermines Roman rule. So it is, through the course of interrogation between veteran soldier and detainee, that a story emerges that will shake the very foundations of the Roman Empire.
Now making its first-ever appearance in English, this award-winning, meticulously researched Spanish best seller transports readers back to ancient Rome - to a culture far removed from ours yet with striking similarities, and to a time of tumultuous upheaval in which the stakes are high for followers of Christ.

    Everyone should read.
Thank you Cesar Vidal. How wonderful to spend time with the Fisherman. I wish everyone could read this book.
    Interesting Historical perspective
I have read other reviews which suggest just reading the book of Mark, but I found the Roman perspective interesting. Even though this is a work of Historical Fiction the author did his due dilagence. Good quick listen for any modern day Christian looking to gain some historica perspective. James Adams does a great job.

Always give me an audiobook read by Carole Boyd
While I know nothing about Carole's acting career, I do know that she is a born audiobook narrator. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that she is the best British female audiobook narrator (I love Dame Judi Dench too but she is best at reading poetry). She has a voice pleasing to the ear, style of narration soothing to the heart and pace of narration that brings enjoyment. Give her any audiobooks, she will no doubt narrate them with equal charm. Give me any of her audiobooks, I will definitely have a good time listening.
    Really good
Not a waste of money~ It may not be quite as good as "Long Way Home" but it's still awesome!
    SLOW AND OVER-ROMANTICIZED! HORRIBLE SEX-SCENES
This story is slow and very boring. There's nothing for the characters to overcome, just little problems here or there and never just one train of thought. There are also VERY dull and weird sex scenes. The author romanticizes domestic violence and rape. I am not anti-violence, or anti rape in stories, sometimes they work well, but the author writes Charlotte, the main character, oblivious to the fact that these things are going on and even accepting these things as her fault. It drove me crazy how stupid Charlotte was. This book was frustrating and slow. I had to put my iPod on 2x speed in order to get through it. I've read and listened to thousands of books and I recommend...DO NOT waste your money!
    standard Audrey Howard
Carole byd who reads this one is fabulous!!! The story itself is over long but I loved it...mostly because Boyd makes each character an individual voice and holds my attention as if it were a play at the West end in London.
    Great work as always!!!
Excellent author Audrey Howard and always excellent narration by Carole Boyd thank you .

On the whole another wonderful story
Having thoroughly enjoyed book 2 -Refining Emma (Candlewood Trilogy #2)- I expected good things from book 3, and on the whole it did not disappoint!
Unlike the previous two books, book 3 feels a bit less like a series of vignettes and more like one story. It took me a moment to switch gears, but again I loved the characters so it didn't take much to keep me engaged.
That said, I found it frustrating that the hero seemed to do things periodically that felt out of character (or at least the motivation for the actions were muddy). Even this wouldn't have lowered the rating on this book for me, but the handling of the ending is what finally dropped a star for me.
    ******SPOILER ALERT*******
I simply couldn't feel good about an ending where a fiance leaves the relationship intentionally broken to go put together a big surprise behind the scenes to make up for it. What kind of a marriage would they be headed into if the spouse intentionally leaves a really big issue unresolved (which is VERY hurtful to the other spouse) only to build intimacy in outside relationships (at the expense of their significant other) by creating a surprise with others...?
Let me say again I LOVED this series... but these last few pages of this book took a good bit of the joy out of what should have been an awesome ending because I kept cringing at the major marital faux pas that was unfolding.
Mind you I'll still read the book undoubtedly many more times - I loved the series - but my expectations will be managed next time to prepare myself for this somewhat disappointing ending.
    Sweet Christian Romance
I love these kinds of books for 'getaway' reading. These are pure storytelling with a Christian theme. No sex or violence, I know the authors I can trust to deliver these stories and Delia Parr is one of them. While she's not at the top of my favorites list she's good at bringing in characters who are believable and her situations bring in humor along with some drama.
    Awesome series!
What a treat to share the lives of Emma's family and friends in this series. I was touched by the humorous events as well as shed a few tears at some points. A very satisfying read.
    Great read!
Loved this series. The characters are well developed and it's a "clean" read which is very refreshing. I highly recommend it!
    Great book
I enjoyed this book very much.

    JPR does a wonderful job
This is the second one of her novels I have read and I am now hooked. It was both compelling and disturbing, and emotional. I had to force myself to go to bed at 2am instead of finishing up the book. The author really knows how to bring the characters to life, and although it's a work of fiction it is based on actual events that I never knew about until reading this book. BUY THIS BOOK...NO BUY ALL OF HER BOOKS, I know that I am and I can't wait to read the next one.
    Enlightening
John Grisham said it best: "Everything is about race... don't ever forget that. It's race and money... " -John Grisham, Sycamore Row
    Enlightening....and Sad......
Magic City: the novel is a work of historical fiction set in 1920's Tulsa, OK aka "the Magic City" due to its beauty and prosperity from the booming successes of the surrounding oil fields. Life is good for Whites and even better for African Americans in the small all-black section, Deep Greenwood, where black-owned banks, businesses, churches, and schools thrive for its middle-class citizens. A segregated but peaceful coexistence is interrupted by accusation of the rape of a white woman named Mary Keane. In a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, the central character Joe Samuels, a misunderstood black son of a banker, runs for his life to the bosom of Greenwood. The townsfolk rally to defend their native son much to the dismay of the bigoted deputies and mayor of Tulsa.
In some respects, the theme echoed those in the movie "Rosewood". Only this time, the author lightens the story adding depth and dimension to Mary and Joe. Joe's fascination with his idols Harry Houdini and his older brother, Harry, adds an element of fantasy that reveals inner conflicts, family secrets, and other aspects of self discovery and healing for the character. The author shows us Mary's world and Rhodes' writing style actually allows us to feel for both characters that are caught in a downward spiral of cataclysmic events. The supporting cast of characters adds to the story appropriately without overwhelming the main characters. She uses their voices to share the history of how blacks migrated to the area after the Civil War. She conveys the frustration and disappointment that the African Americans soldiers experienced when returning home from WWI. And she paints an adequate picture of the organized, systematic destruction of Greenwood to intentionally disenfranchise and humiliate its black citizens.

    Kept me interested
I was under the assumption this was a romantic novel. I would not classify it in that category. Very little romance but a lot of trials and tribulations for the heroine. One trial after another to test her at every turn. Susan Duerdan is one of my favorite narrators. This was my first book by Meg Rosoff. I would have wished better for the heroine. Meg Rosoff did a very good job with her story.

    Members Reviews:
    Not my favorite
I like this author very much and I believe this is the seventh book I have read of hers. This was my least favorite of all. I did enjoy the historical details of the Shaker life, although most of the coverage of individual Shaker characters showed them to be so unlikable that I didn't enjoy reading about them. I know that it is important to show their personalities as part of the story, but I guess I just got tired of "being around" them. I liked the main character, Gabrielle, but her "gift of knowing" seemed like too much of a stretch for a main character.
If you are interested in a study of the Shaker faith, you will enjoy that part of the book. However, if you are looking for an interesting romantic fiction book, I'd like to recommend that you read Ann Gabhart's Rosey Corner and Hollyhill books first. Comparing the customer ratings, you will see that they receive outstanding reviews.
First novel in her Shaker series
As a Kentuckian, the only thing I like better than historical fiction is historical fiction set in Kentucky. The Shakers are an interesting part of Kentucky's history, with two villages maintained today as museums. The author has based her fictional village on Pleasant Hill, the larger of the two. She has spent several years studying and researching the Shakers, as evidenced in her accurate portrayal of their actions during wartime and their attitudes toward the outside world. I especially appreciated her depiction of the military in the War of 1812. Christian fiction writers often shy away from realism, but Ms. Gabhart shows, at least in part, the gritty realism of war in the 19th century.
One of the best things I can say for this book is that the ending was not obvious from the very beginning. It held my interest consistently until the end. I had to know what Gabrielle's decision would be.
    5 stars
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the author as a contest prize. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissionâs 16 CFR, Part 255: âGuides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.â
    Great book!
I loved the book and stayed up several nights in a row, until I literally fell asleep with my Kindle across my chest. LOL The only thing that keeps me from giving this book five stars is that it is in need of a good proof reader to correct the numerous grammatical errors. At times I, would get so frustrated with it, I would put it down, only to pick it right back up. I was to invested in the lives of Brice and Gabriella. I had to find out what happened.
