    A very Good read!
Excellent book! Well written (she is one of my favorite authors) and very interesting, especially if you are a queen Victoria fan!
    Wonderful story!
Great book and I'm happy with purchase!
I have never read any books written by Jean Plaidy and truly enjoyed this one
I thought the story was very well written . I have never read any books written by Jean Plaidy and truly enjoyed this one.
even the hero worship angle couldn't make the book interesting
This was not one of Plaidy's better books. Victoria does not come across as very interesting. On the contrary, she is very needy and poorly written. Plaidy has done better.
    Five Stars
    Excellent

    More of the same
Where does The Wolves of the North rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I have enjoyed all of the Warrior Of Rome books and alway7s look forward to the next one. This was simply "the next one".
Confusing, or may be it's me.
I very much enjoyed the first Three of this series, The Narration in particular was very good & made the characters come alive. The fourth not so good, but not bad either.
But Wolves of the North, i did not enjoy, too confusing trying to work out who was real & who was a mythical character, & too confusing trying to remember who was on who's side.
This book may be better in print where you can keep flicking back to try to follow the story line.
The story finishes in mid flight presumably to encourage fans such as myself to look forward to the next episode, but i doubt that i will bother about the sequel to this.
Nick Bolton as usual read very well, but i feel he was let down by the story.

    One of my favourite books.
Every aspect of this book keeps you turning the pages. Great story and great narration.
You really feel like you are back in the 1800s both of which are a credit to the author and narrator.
I've lost count of how many times I've read this book now, I don't sleep great and I find certain books help me drift off at night, this is my number one, go to book for a bed time story. It's a combination of being absorbed into the story and the tone of the narrators voice that have me comfortable and relaxed in no time.
    Could do better
What did you like best about The Somnambulist? What did you like least?
The descriptions of place were good and the character pool was diverse but I could find little sympathy with most of them. Neither was there much in the way of Gothic in this 'gothic' novel. The titillating elements were rather jaded and the whole thing was a little on the limp side - much like the ubiquitous rose pressed between the pages of the protagonists step-mother's diary or ...ahem... the post-coital member of her step-brother.
If youve listened to books by Essie Fox before, how does this one compare?
This is the first and probably the last.
Did Annie Aldington do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
She did do a reasonable job and you could hear that her forte was the colloquial London accents; she did less of a good job with the noblesse and you could here the tell-tale short vowels in place of the upper-class drawling tones that one might expect of Victorian play-boys.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
If it was heavily abridged and re-written with more grandeur, drama and a less annoying main female character.
    Any additional comments?
I should have read the other reviews before buying - they are generally as I feel: disappointed.
    A disappointment.
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
I'm not really sure who would enjoy this although I see that it has some very positive reviews. I have previously very much enjoyed books by Sarah Waters ( Affinity, Tipping The Velvet, Fingersmith) , Jane Harris (The Observations, Gillespie and I) and more recently, Anna Freeman (Fair Fight). I thought that this may be in a similar vein but I was very much mistaken. This book is weakly plotted and characterised and cannot be compared to the others I have mentioned.
Would you ever listen to anything by Essie Fox again?
This was her debut novel and so her writing may have improved with time but I don't think that I would listen to any more of her work.
What didnt you like about Annie Aldingtons performance?
I felt that the range of accents was insufficient to match the differing backgrounds of the characters.

It was Charles I's love for his queen, Henrietta Maria, that plummeted England into the darkness of the Civil Wars, but it was the love and loyalty of another man that sustained her through days of betrayal, destitution, and death.
Tall and brave, Harry Jermyn is captivated by the witty French princess, just 14 years old when she sails with him to Dover, queen of a land she has never seen, of a people whose language she cannot speak, who despise her for her faith - and wife of a king she has never met.
Charles grows to love her, but rebellion and the threat of execution force her into exile and into the arms of Harry, who risks his life for her sake. Together they work for the royalist cause, pawning the crown jewels, securing men and arms, and returning to England to lead an army south.
As England is torn apart, Henrietta's heart is torn between the two men she loves, between duty and illicit passion. The subject of dangerous gossip and public scandal, she is powerless to calm the storm which will lead to tragedy.

The great English houses in which she is entertained are frosty and forbidding, dogged by intrigue above stairs, and gossip below. Surprisingly Good
I am not often very tolerant of romance novels, but this one intrigued me because of the latest excitement for all things Edwardian - although this is probably strictly more Victorian. I actually listened to the first 3 hours and then couldn't be bothered with the rest of it, until a few weeks later I thought I'd give it another try and then found I couldn't put it down. It follows Cora, a young, naive American heiress who accidentally meets and falls in love with a British aristocrat. She marries him for love, but can the same be said of him? With twists and turns and a good deal of intrigue, you can't help but become caught up in Cora's life and romance, and the lives of those around her, such as her maid, Bertha.
I really enjoyed the historical facts that were woven through the story and you can see that the author has researched her subject and time period thoroughly.
    Well done Daisy
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Some parts were nice others just dragged on.
What other book might you compare My Last Duchess to and why?
I think it's unique in its own way. I could not make out where the story was going.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator was okay I guess
Could you see My Last Duchess being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Yes I think it would make an interesting historical mini series.
    Any additional comments?
It liked it but was just not jumping up and down about it.
    Loved it
Would you listen to My Last Duchess again? Why?
I would listen it again and again because of the language it was written in. Performance is fantastique. So even my husband lisned to it along with me.
What was one of the most memorable moments of My Last Duchess?
The last chapter is my favourite.
    Highly Recommended
I loved every minute of this brilliant book, it was one of those audiobooks you just don't want to finish listening to.
Although this book is fiction it is based on the fantastic real life stories of the American heiresses who travelled to Britain in the late 19th century in search of a title and in particular Consuelo Vanderbilt, who married The 9th Duke of Marlborough in 1895.
Highly recommended. If you like Downton Abbey you will enjoy this book.
    Ok
Pleasant book but i found it predictable and never really gripped me in any way. It was "nice" to listen to but not captivating.

Some folks said he was unusual. Some called him uncanny. He was a mountain man, big, gentle and strong. They called him Bear. His keen senses bode him well in the mountains and forests of the Pacific Northwest. Danger was not foreign to him; he lived with it everyday. Perhaps this is why an entire mining camp could count on him to go after supplies in the dead of winter. It would mean traveling from the valley over the rugged Cascade Mountains and back again. The first person who tried it was killed by robbers. Now, Bear Walker was the only hope the miners had left. Starvation was the other option.

    Enjoyable For All Ages
This book proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable listen, great for many age groups. I found the narrator who suited for the book and easy to follow. Those who enjoy the narration of Simon Vance and similar narrators should also enjoy this narrator's performance.

    Coulda, Shoulda, but didn't
This novel could have been good BUT the heavy-handed religious dogma crushes the story. Plus Dick Hill's narration (usually excellent) takes on a Capt Kirk quality,,, over acting? I dunno but it is over-something. Too bad because the trauma the Civil War soldiers suffered is a topic worth exploring with honesty
    How'd do men do this?
What's inside men that makes them fight and die. The horror alone would seem enough to make most men turn and run .
But they have this enter spirit that could be pride, God, family, All of that and more I'm sure. I think it's more like what's going on at the time. How could you let down the men beside you! Ya can't.
